Re: Demo guns

November 30 2007, 10:46 AM

Warren just call the Umarex number and listen to the extensions and hit the one for Glenn there, he will take care of you on a Demo, if I had not spent so much money this year I would like to buy me another Diana gun and it would be a Demo as they are a great deal.

I have it

November 30 2007, 2:32 PM

Got the 48, wanted the 350 but guess what??? I paid for the 48, $232.61 including shipping. Now you tell me if this is not a bargain.

A Beman of this caliber and equivalent would of cost me $459.00. But this is not a Beman it is a RWS.

This gun has the same fps as an 350 and is fixed barrel.

Thank you for the heads up on this deal.

And remember "it is 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"

48 vs 350

November 30 2007, 7:12 PM

not the same velocities (fps), especially in the .177 cal. Check straightshooters velocity tests. 350 is more powerfull and there is a considerable difference in the .177 by at least 3ft-lbs, 2+FPE in .22. The 350 has a longer spring and a few other differences. You can't go wrong with the 48 though. Good luck.

PS.
Did you ask about nicks and scratches, etc. on the demo guns?

Harry, time to jump

November 30 2007, 7:27 PM

Harry, time to get that 460. I paid double for mine. Get the 460. with the scope, which is also half off. I know the scope is cheap, but for that price with the mount you can use it for something else.

how about you?

November 30 2007, 7:47 PM

Why don't you jump on that 350 Dave? I paid over $100 more. You didn't pay over $600 for a 460 combo did you? I hate that C-mount, never again!

Actually money is very tight right now. I 'm paying thousands $ in lawyer/legal fees and I 'm getting a loan to pay a huge amount of inheritance tax for my dad's estate. He passed a little over a month ago suddenly ($6K for the funeral) and he didn't have all his affairs in order. The dang lawyers and the government are having a field day on our expense and it looks like we may have to go to court to straighten some things out. Not a good time..

Sorry to hear about your Dad, Harry

November 30 2007, 7:59 PM

I lost my Dad in 74, and it seems like yesterday. He died right in my arms. Man, that was tough. Any way, I just ordered a Russian Baikal and a lot of other shooting crap yesterday, before the ad came out. Beside, I am kind of leary of used guns. How many dry fires went through them etc?

Good luck on you affairs. I know this is a tough time. I will say a special prayer for you and your family tonight. God Bless.

350 versus 48

December 1 2007, 7:15 AM

I got this info from straight shooters.

350 Hobby 867 fps 20 ft/lbs
48 Hobby 851 fps 20 ft/lbs

The difference is 16 fps for the 350.

But the 48 is a fixed barrel (more accurate), less cocking effort (less recoil), heavier @ 8.5 lbs which makes it more stable to shoot, etc. etc. etc.

Now, I wanted a 350 but got the 48 for $225.00 plus shipping, this is a $350.00 springer. Glen said all demos are checked before offered, they have a full warranty by RWS.

And all of this because someone on this blog had the time to put this info for ALL of us and for that I thank you.

and remember "it is 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"

Glen at Uramax

December 1 2007, 10:21 AM

I may suggest that you keep close to Glen. He is a great guy, and responds right away. I had a cracked barrel seal from a gun I bought from Bass Pro shops. He got back to me right a way and then sent a new seal within a matter of days. He is always there to answer any questions. Sounds like you got a great deal. If Glen said the gun was checked out then you can bet it was.

Good Shooting
Dave

How right you are on this

December 1 2007, 12:35 PM

Glen is a super salesman at UMAREX, he had me on the phone asking his foreaman about my questions on the background. I could hear him asking and responding to me. Now that is service w/a/phone.

Do you need service with an RWS, than call Glen at UMAREX.

460. cost

December 1 2007, 10:49 AM

Harry, Actually I did pay that for the 460. I believe I paid abut $615.00, but that also included the Leapers scope, a scope mount, and having Pyramid mount the scope and a hard case. The scope and mount were great, and so far have had no problem. Hey, I recenly ordered a Chrony, was this a mistake? I only have two guns now, correction 3 guns I just ordered a Baikal for my son.

not at all

December 3 2007, 12:36 PM

Buying a chrony is fine. Nothing wrong with that. Believe me, I 'll have one soon so we can compare #'s and ft-lbs!

I have now set up a shooting station downstairs in my house to shoot paper at 15yds. It's too cold up here in NY now and I don't want to freeze my butt off shooting another ~500 pellets to break in the 350. I just have to make sure I do all my shooting when noone is home because the pellet travels from my office down the hallway past the laundry room and into the family room where the target is located at the opposite end of that room where the house ends. It's all a straight line. I 'm shooting pretty much the entire length of my house! 50 pellets so far on iron sights and none of them have hit a door, wall, or anything else. I don't feel a draft so I 'm guessing none of the pellets went through the house

arm and a leg

December 3 2007, 6:30 PM

Harry this new hobby of mine is getting bad, My hobby for almost 30 years was running, and coaching runners, it was somewhat expensive. I have a heart rate monitor that cost almost $700.00 plus the software to boot, not to include about 1 million running shoes, jackets, races, travel, etc, etc. But I have to tell ya, I really em into this new thing with the air guns. One little stop at the local walmart and a simple impulsive purchase of a $100.00 Crosman Quest, started this whole thing. That was September, now > Diana 34>Diana460.>Chrony>AZH61 Baikal>Ammo>slings>. God, I feel like a junkie. Now I look at the Uramax sale and see this R5 mag. pistol for half off and it is killing me. Harry, I need help I need a Doctor Phil!
Thank God! I never took up Golfing!

don't I know it!

December 5 2007, 8:28 PM

Tell me about it Dave! My main hobby as you know is racing. I usually dump a few grand $ per year into my car, plus I treat myself to a new (or slightly used) car every few years. Hek, Hoosier race tires alone are >$1,000/set and I usually go through 2-3 sets per season! Dedicated race cars need a lot of maintenance especially when you race them almost every weekend between March & October like I do, but that's not the half of it. I like trying on different aftermarket parts and suspensions all the time which cost thousands $ more.. Modifying your car is also highly addictive but I 'm also very competitive and like to win, so I make it an effort to have more or better go-fast parts than the "other guy" so I have the upper hand, drivers being equal. Basically I spend whatever savings I have from my salary on the stupid car.

Now I 'm getting airgun fever but if I 'm not careful I won't have enough $ to continue with my racing hobby. That's the only reason I haven't bought more guns and spent as much as you. I 'm trying to economize and I would like to maintain both hobbies without going crazy. Believe me it's hard not to splurge. I had a $250 order of various airgun accessories (incl. chrony) in my cart a couple of days ago but cancelled it after a lot of contemplating. I was thinking of selling some of my firearms to make room for some more airguns. This way I don't have to come up with extra $ for my airgun hobby. I also won't have to buy another gun cabinet on top of the 2 large ones I have already! I don't think I have room for another one anyway and the wife will most likely put it outside next to the garbage cans & recycleables for pickup

Anyone want to buy a Remington 20ga? 4yrs old and only been fired about 10 times. I 'll throw in a box of ammo
I just had a horrible idea.. I want to send out my Crossman CO2 revolver to that popular CO2 & Pneumatic tuner guy (forget his name) to have it tuned for more power! Yeah you do need help Dave, I 'm normal, nothing wrong with me

Hey have you seen some of those guys' signatures on the GTA forums? They 're half a page long listing all their airguns. You 'll be like them soon (like next month, heheh)Don't worry it's only a temporary phase you 're going through. It will fade after 6-7yrs. That's what they told me about my racing hobby 9yrs ago

well..

December 6 2007, 4:37 PM

you know what they say.. you can never have enough guns! Now I know what they mean.

Man, that guy's collection is just awesome. Unbelievable.. And I thought I was bad with 19 firearms and 3 airguns.
Actually they were not all airguns although it looked like at least 3/4 of them were. He has them all labeled/tagged so he can find them easier or not forget what they are Or he could be a dealer and gunsmith. Imagine, you walk into that room, and say to yourself: "ok what gun am I going to use today?" How do you make a decision like that? With that many guns, I 'm sure most of them have not been used for a while. I haven't fired some of mine for more than 10yrs!

I 'm going to print a couple of those pics and show them to my wife. "Honey, I want a room like this for Christmas!" I 'd probably have to rob a bank to afford 1/4 of those..

I would not do that!

December 6 2007, 6:17 PM

I advise to keep a low profile with your wife in regards to shooting Harry. The less she knows, the better. First of all she is probably not the least bit interested and could care less about a piece of steel and wood that does nothing in the kitchen or her wardrobe. If she knows that I am looking to buy a gun, it is just fodder for her to go to the mall. I never tell her anything about guns at all. My 7 year old son, loves my office and it is hard to keep him out! He is especially interested now that I took him into the woods recently and let him fire my 34. I bought the Baikal for him, but at the mention of buying the gun, my wife pulled the GUNS ARE DANGEROUS crap and I just shut up. I went ahead and bought the Baikal, but it is too dangerous for him, (no Safety) and he is still a little too young, so I will keep it for myself. (What a fun Gun!). Harry, just shut the hell up about guns to the wife. Never say a word. If she comes into the man room, I simply mention 'as I do the bills,' "I notice you spent a fortune in the mall last month," and she quickly leaves. I also keep the entrance really cluttered so she has a hard time entering. Harry, you always have to think two steps ahead, and always have a plan B. NOW, that said, I have to plan on buying a RWS P5 and a new Panther in 22.cal. I will dream of this plan when I go to sleep tonight.
Goodnight! and good Shooting.

That is why I always bring up her shopping sprees and the 150 pairs of shoes in 3 different closets that she hardly ever wears. Even my son's closet is full of her shoes. I point out all the useless nick-nacks she buys all the time, most of which are in boxes in the attic over the years because we have no room for all the crap she buys. And they have the nerve to argue about one or two guns we buy that we utilize all the time and put to good use.. They have some nerve, seriously.

I told her last night after I printed out a couple of pics of that gun storage room, that I could have easily afforded all of those, had she spent 3/4 (not even half) of what she has spent so far on (worthless) stuff during the last 17yrs I 've been supporting her. I told her my guns will keep most of their value over the years, but her shoes, clothes and nick-nacks have absolutely no value, maybe $30-40 if she has a garage sale. I also told her that if she went to Dunkin Donuts only twice/week instead of 4-5X, I could easily afford a couple more guns per year. Why go to DD when you can make any coffee you want at home? I can go on and on.. I was trying to build a case to get the chrony and other stuff and maybe a 460 since I 'm convinced is a better all around gun than the 350. She actually shut me up when she mentioned the thousands$ I spend on the car & tires every year, so it was kind of a draw Needless to say she hasn't spoken to me at all this morning Which is good, it 'll keep her out of my office downstairs. She has a pretty good understanding that it is my room, my space, and that she should not be visiting much. I have a lock on my door, but sometimes when I lock it to clean my guns or surf web sites for gun stuff or place orders, she thinks I 'm watching porno or chatting with girls, so I only lock it from the outide now when I 'm not home. I caught my son in there one time a couple of years ago when he was 10 or 11, and I yelled so much at the poor kid that he 's afraid to come in, and now he always knocks. All the real ammo is always locked away but I do have some guns out because I have no room in the gun cabinets. Besides how do I know a friend of his didn't give him a shutgun shell or something.. I have locks on most of the guns now and I have since installed a lock outside the door. It just gives me peace of mind knowing my son doesn't have access to them. Maybe when he is 16 or 17 but I 'm still going to keep everythign locked up.

RWS 40

December 7 2007, 3:53 AM

They carry RWS 40's although it's not listed, nagged one the other day, 2-3 left I think. Going for the same price as an rws 34.

Anyone have any experience/knowledge about the rws40? All i can find are a few retailers and no reviews of it online.

M-40

December 7 2007, 5:25 AM

Jon what price and what cal is your 40 or M40? As I understand they (M40) are made in Spain for Diana. No open sights you have to scope them. They are advertised for $165 to $175 w/o shipping.
Not many review's on them. Some state 800 FPS in .177, not seen them in .22 cal.
Avaiting your answer to call UMAREX.
I bought the 48 completely refurbished and han a couple of little scratches noting major, well lubed and in excellent condition.

and remember "it is 39% the gun and 79% the shooter"

Specs for model M40

December 7 2007, 5:39 AM

RWS M-40 .177 Air Rifle with Deluxe Steel Muzzlebrake:

The first thing you notice on the new RWS Model 40 Air Guns is the sleek, new, polished steel muzzlebrake which is unlike any that RWS has had in the past. It is particularly attractive and it makes a comfortable cocking handle, and give these air guns perfect balance. At the other end of the ambidextrous hardwood stock is a contoured black rubber butt pad which helps with precisely shouldering the airgun in addition to improving the overall look of these air guns. In between you'll find all of the reliability, accuracy and durability that has made the modern RWS barrel cocking air rifles so famous.

The RWS Model 40 Air Rifles are .177 caliber air guns, and are factory rated at 1,000 ft/sec. The RWS M-40 is designed only for use with a scope - iron sights are not included.
Power Source: Single-Stroke, Spring-Piston, Barrel-Cocking
Cocking Effort: 33 lbs.
Caliber: .177
Max Velocity: up to 1000 fps
Capacity: single-shot
Features: automatic safety
Sights: without iron sights. Attached mounting rail for scope use
Length: 45 inches
Weight: 7.5 lbs.
Barrel and Action: Blued Steel
Stock: Hand Finished Hardwood

From a web site, These are the specs. and description. Price is $208.00 w/o shipping. I have not seen it in .22 cal.

And remember "it is 30% the gun and 70 the shooter"

Too late

December 7 2007, 10:01 AM

Just swiped a 40 from Ryan at UMAREX this morning in .22 cal for $131.00 and a RWS scope 3x9x40 Model 450 for $49.00. Not bad for $180.00 even w/shipping. With BKL 1 pc. mount D7 for another $50.00 it should come to $230.00. I have seen this set up for $300 plus.

The rifle is made in Germany and not Spain.

I asked him for FPS in .177 and he said 1,000, then I asked for FPS .22 cal and he say's 1,000 again, go figure.

And now to wait for Fed-Ex, it will be 7 more day's (can't wait).

be careful

December 7 2007, 6:13 PM

If this guy at Umarex told you the 40 is 1,000fps in both .22 & .177, I would not believe a word he said, including if he told you the gun is made in Germany. They are normally made in Spain. I would not trust this guy at all. We all know not even the most powerful Diana springers can't achieve 1,000fps in .22 and the 40 is not one of those..

my Demo Deal arrived Saturday

December 10 2007, 7:14 AM

I picked up the 48. This has been a long standing "want it" gun for a long time . Other than a few small (read that as miniscule) dings near the buttpad ,overall a beautiful rifle. A quick wipe down, screw check and a few MP5 patches pulled through yielded a gun that is very accurate even with open sights.Excellent shooter! Did I mention this was a beautiful rifle? The savings in price as a demo vs nib gives a pretty fair start on a decent scope/mount.I chose a BKL260D7 for the mount not sure on the scope yet. Thanks for the heads up on the Demo Deal.

Great Air Rifle

December 10 2007, 10:22 AM

This is my first side level 48 in .22 cal and am amazed on the qualities it has. I also bought a Demo, with two small scratches. It came heavely lubed, had to clean and clean some more.

The ratchet system and safety on the sidelever is great. It shoots 850FPS and is very accurate compared to my 34, it does not want to cant to the right like my other springers'. Maybe because it is 8.5 lbs. and has more rifle weight. One thing is that it is picky with pellet selection. On the RWS Hobby's I have to angle them to get them in.

BKL 260 mount is the way to go and I found in opticsplanet.com some great scopes, free UPS shipping.

Let me know how it goes with your 48

I don't think most dealers

December 10 2007, 12:18 PM

are cheats at ALL ! They need to make a buck like everyone else ,afterall they sell stuff for a living . I bought the 48 only because it was priced very well . Truth be told - my plan was to buy one anyway - this was icing on the cake. I have a favorite dealer at StraightShooters (and they are fairly local to me ) . I may not have purchased the gun from them - the ammo and accessories I have (and more! ) When you need advice Kevin and Craig steer you right - No complaints from me. I've spent quite a bit there recently ,I'm sure it won't be the last Ha! warren the 48 I got was also in .22 - other than a little dust in the bore and styrofoam bit from the package for the most part it was clean . All the hype about being difficult to shoot is horse puckey LOL Sweet gun without a doubt.

The BKL is definitely a great mount . I kind of balked when I saw the price , but after having one I won't invest in another .

SS is about 2.5 - 3 hours drive north ,

December 10 2007, 7:45 PM

in podunk midwest that "close"  . As far as a store front (I asked) and was told "no store front" in St Cloud Mn . but would make exceptions under some circumstances .  When I called, oddly enough, I sensed a more southern accent .LOL . I'm not sure how big the company is but they've been around quite awhile . Like most of the people involved in airgunning I've spoken with - Yup they are good folks!

hmm..

December 11 2007, 8:58 PM

no store front usually means these guys have day jobs but there are exceptions. It's hard to make a living selling pellets and a few air rifles per month, especially when there 's a lot of competition out there, and there are 2 mouths (2 SS partners?) to feed. I think if they could match Pyramid's prices they would move more product because they give good advice and test most of the guns they sell. They also ship in plano cases if I 'm not mistaken. Maybe that explains their higher prices.

Well ???

December 11 2007, 9:19 PM

When you call they answer the phone , unless their day job is holding a coffee cup while waiting for the phone to ring ...not sure what to say about that . PA lists a Beeman R7 at $325 , SS lists at $299 ...? Might not be true of all the stuff but I know that part is right . Buy 3 tins(sometimes 4) get 1 free at PA ,Buy 6 get 1 free at SS ...ok you got that one .Yes the guns  are fully inspected and tested and ship in Doskosil gun cases at SS ...hey wait a second here ...you guys affiliated with PA ? Ship my order already LOL

well..

December 12 2007, 5:14 AM

in general most SS items are more $$ than anywhere else. Look at their pellets - $8.95 for all the Beeman .22cal line. Most other sites are $7.95. CP's, I got them for $13.95, they 're $15.95 I believe, etc.
Anyway, if their rifle prices include the gun case then their gun prices are decent. Do you know if the case is included in the price they advertise for a rifle?

actually I'm not sure...

December 12 2007, 5:27 AM

on the cases , a quick phone call would be all it would take to find out. Yes I've noticed the pellets are a bit higher. It does seem as though the scope prices are for the most part in line with online retailers -some higher, some same, some a bit lower. Thats ok by me, it's a business and a business can't be successful without making a dollar here or there & I do have a place I can call on for tech type help and if the *need* arose I *could* go there for help . I pretty much try to support the local guy - but I do find deals that I can't pass up on at other places .

I live north of town and they're on the south side

December 12 2007, 1:50 PM

Hell, by now I could have driven past their place and not even known it. I honestly never bothered to look them up, so to speak. When I lived in Minneapolis my wife bought an airgun or two from there. They actually met at McDonalds because she was on her way pat St Cloud to her parents' place. Now that we live north of town there have been days when the guys actually stopped in during their lunch to drop off an airgun lol.

Its pretty funny. You see two guys roll up the drive on motorcycles and they hand off the pellets or targets along with the sales reciept. You chit chat for a minute or two and then they're gone. I've asked them to come shooting out at my farm a number of times but they're just too busy.

Yeah, for me its a local call lol.

For vintage stuff I go directly to Gary Steel in Minneapolis. Gary's been repairing all makes of airguns for close to forty years now. B&B Supply is a real store. Airguns, bows and accessories. (612) 724-5230

When I buy stuff I have to flip a coin two out of three because I would like to give them BOTH my business whenever possible.

What do you mean "country bumpkin midwest"?

December 12 2007, 3:05 PM

Maybe you didn't mean it, but it almost sounds offensive. Which is especially strange because you just stated you're clearly of country bumpkin "stock" lol. Technically, I live in Sartell. I bought the land which is currently being farmed, about three years ago in order to have a house and property on which I can walk out the door and pretty much do what I want.

I'm not originally from the area, or this state actually.

I'm sure there are people here (and people who read this site) who are, as you say, country born and raised. They might not appreciate the way what you wrote seemed to read. Then again, it sounds like you're from south of MN, so you're as much country bumpkin as anyone and I could have misread the whole thing.

Yes Sir

December 12 2007, 3:21 PM

You have definitely taken my comment out of context ...I'm Mn stock through and through and as strange as it may seem to some I am not ashamed of being considered a "Country Bumpkin" . Sartell is a nice section of the state I have friends and relatives up that way . I'm sorry if you were offended at the statement but it was geared more towards "airgun delivery to the McD's" . You won't see that in most metropolitan areas !

I apologize then

December 12 2007, 3:44 PM

I'm not really used to "country living" as they say. hehe I grew up west of Milwaukee in a city called Broofield. We weren't wealthy but about 98% of the kids I went to school with sure were. Yeesh. What I'm about to tell you is no joke. It actually happened.

I was at a friend's house and his mother was cleaning dishes with a rather forlorn look on her face. I asked her, "Dottie, what's wrong?" (for some reason a lot of parents expected their kids' friends to call them by their first name)

"Well, there's a party at so-and-so's house and there will be a couple there who isn't from Brookfield. Honestly, Harvey, I just don't know what to say to them."

It was then that I realized what kind of city and people I was surrounded by. I also learned an uncle of mine had to go before a committee to see if he could move into Elm Grove. The neighboring city. Sort of the hole in the donut of Brookfield. Brookfield surrounds Elm Grove on three sides. He was denied and so he moved to Brookfield.

That sort of thing rubs off on a person whose folded into that kind of community for most of his life. Podunk and country bumpkin were derogatory terms where I grew up so breaking the habit is... hard. And sometimes you don't even realize something offends you until you realize its wrong thinking by someone reminding you that it is. So I owe you an apology for that. This town presents a whole different way of thinking than I'm used to

Be well, and thanks for the lesson. I did need it.

December 12 2007, 4:21 PM

I understand where you might have taken offense , but as I've learned from past 'net experience, you can't catch the drift on flat text . My apologies also .
I grew up as a displaced rich kid . Folks had money, then lost it all . So according to the farm kids "I wasn't fittin to live with the barn animals" .The rich kids said I was. <---*That* is an old joke !
I'm ok , are you ?

KRicktr and Bill

December 12 2007, 7:09 PM

I'm okay too

Bill, I remember when 'wanago didn't have a street light and the high school was a shambles. But that was in the early eighties. I used to ride an '87 Yamaha Virago 535 all over the place in those days. Still have it but about to sell to a friend. Got my butt into scooters now. Vespas. Kick in the pants fun they are. Have two and selling the Virago should allow me to get my wife an older one. Its a particular model she likes. Currently I have a '64GL and an '07 LX150. They are great machines for the country rides and going to work.

ps I lived in the section between Elm Grove road, the freeway and Greenfield and 124th. North end of Wilson Drive. Back then Bishop's Woods still had the house tucked away in it. Most all my family is still in the area.
