Took the demo deal 48 to the range this a.m.  Very chilly in a Minnesota December sorta way . Three benches 25,50 or 100 - I chose the 25 because I hate cold ,walking through ankle deep snow and the like . Shot off the bench with back of my hand rested on a rolled up towel .I think it's doing well for only shooting just over a tin of pellets through it. Pretty pleased with the results .
The target is a 3x3" post-it ,the center square is 5/8" .
Groups are 5 shots each.
Upper groups left to right 3/8" and 1/2" c-t-c
Lower groups left to right 1/4" and 3/8" c-t-c.
Target low in picture was the sighter group same distance 5 shots into a 1/2" (lonely flyer was from me shaking ! which really makes it a 6 shot 3/4 " group)
25 yards using  Crossman 14.3g Accupells and a Busnell Trophy 4-12x40 on a BKL 260d7 .

I'm excited as to how the 48 will respond to the JM GRT kit and lube .

Looks like it's doing well

December 18 2007, 11:31 AM

this early on.Mine still has the factory spring and guides but I disassembled it and did a polish and lube using Jim Maccari's heavy tar on the spring and moly on the outside of the piston seal and the flare on the rear of the piston.Just a suggestion, when you have time, try JSB Exacts through the 48.Heavies (15.9) with factory spring or Express (14.3) with the GRT kit installed.Mine is nearly a one hole shooter with heavies leaving the muzzle at 768.74 fps and 20.86 ft.lbs. energy.I would be interested in seeing some chrony numbers for the GRT equipped 48.

chrony

December 18 2007, 11:58 AM

Cabelas is right down the road from me - I'll check for a chrony there soon. That should be my next buy - wished I'd looked here before I spoke with Ryan @ U ...LOL! Do you guys earn commision here? The 48 isn't even broken in yet and I'm buying more ??? I neeeeeded a 40 , I swear !The JSB 's I should try are the 'heavies' - I've focused on 14g pellets and the Accupells, moly coated CP's and SuperDomes have been satifying enough I've just stuck there (even in the 13xx msp's). AirArms pellets are available at Pyramydair now in 3 distinct diameters 5.50 pointed, 5.51 domed and 5.52 pointed, all in 16g weights - are made by JSB ...q is what diameter will work best in RWS .22 cal?? or was that a typo on PA's part? The 48 *is* capable of some great accuracy and should be able to keep consistancy - unlike the shooter . Thanks for the compliment and suggestions .

This hobby can get expensive quickly!

December 18 2007, 12:09 PM

Each gun usually has it's own preference as to pellet diameter, but mine isn't picky about JSB Exact domes-either 5.51 or 5.52 should serve well.I for one don't receive payment from any manufacturer of airguns or related equipment, despite my enthusiasm for the hobby.BTW-The 48 is my go-to pest/small game gun. This gun has the accuracy and power to handle any game or pest up to and including racoon if the shooter does his/her part.Hope you enjoy yours.

Another 48

December 18 2007, 1:41 PM

Kr you have given me many good advice, I will return your kindness with my assessment of the 48. I also bought the 48 and the 34 and the 40, all in a week time. My 48 is special then my 40 and ARE YOU INTERESTED IN A 34?, give you a good price LOL.

Just got the Accushot and Beeman 1 pc. mount, decided on the Beeman because of horizontal stop, slapped it and with no clicks to the scope (RWS 450 scope) drilled 3 shots at a Coke can at 60 ft. all ctc, 1 inch.

I said to myself WOW!! I came back with my 40 and after some clicks to the Barska scope and 10 shots later I did the same. That is the difference between the 48 and other airguns.

BTW, I live in Tampa, FL and it is 76 degrees. I can shoot all day long at 10, 20 and 30 mtr.

and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"

PS, my 48 is a Demo

Much appreciated Warren

Well since the 40 is basically set up as I want the "look" (with the exception of a synthetic stock) ,I'll have to pass on the 34 ...this time . Keep tryin though you may hit me up at a weak moment heh heh heh .! I have a few options for scopes and mounts laying around here somewhere. One being an Accushot one piece and a Weaver ...where the scope is ?? I gotta search .

When the demo's were first posted , it made me think of all the times I had passed on other 48's since I first read reviews on them . Quite a few years ago I may add ! It been the one airgun that drew my attention for as long as I can remember .Very happy that my first experience with it was positive and will continue to be .

I can shoot all day every day too ! At 10 meters *inside* where its a balmy 78° and * 8%* humidity ...but it isn't the same .

Looks like your 48 is shooting excellent, how do you like the Trophy scope? I put the 6x18 on my gun and it has been so far the best airgun scope I have owned although I have to admit I have not owned that many airgun scopes.

GRT kit for 48

December 19 2007, 6:32 AM

kR
I went to the Maccari web site and found that the NEW GRT kit comes with the flanged washer that seats itself between the piston and the spring. Cool idea, they had to cut 1 spring to get the proper lenght.

My question for you is have you considered getting the 48 in steroids with this kit? Or is it going to be I'm doing it right now.

Let me know if you install the kit and before and after performance. I have been so close to ordering this kit with the seal, not exp. just $87.00 for all.

I wish I had gone with the BLK but have no complaints with the Beeman 1 pc. mount and scope selection on the 48 is simple, it does not kick like a mule any scope will be OK. I go for the 20- 30 yards.

On the subject of the 48: I had no intention of buying it but UMAREX did not have what I wanted and Glenn talked to me about the 48. Sidelevel, 22 cal., fixed barrel and the price $230 plus shipping. That for me was a no brainer.

By the way it is 72 degrees here, I think I will mow the lawn. LOL

Take care

on scopes and springs

December 19 2007, 7:43 AM

Randy - in all honesty the Trophy 4-12 is a very decent scope . Has been quite a few that have stated that it won't hold up to recoil due to the little screws on the objective bell loosening and eventually peening themselves to death . Still others say "it's been the only scope that has held up for them" . ??? what to do? I took a good look at this one . The optics are pretty clear , the AO does focus down under 10 yards (20 feet if ya want to know - maybe this one is a fluke ?) and *drum roll* those lil screws are loctited in already . The tracking of the towers are click positive and seem to be repeatable in my short testing . That adds up to a decent scope at a mid price point that Bushnell warrantees for life on an airgun . I have a Leupold on another gun - but spendy and I didn't want a switch gun to gun scope . I also have a Swift 3-9x40 AO scope on my R7 which I like too . I don't think it would live long on the 48 though - it seems fragile compared to the Trophy - thats my take on it anyway.

Warren - springs and seals and mounts . I don't need another rimfire so I chose what Jim M calls the GRT . The "mid" kit between the GSI and Monolith . Most say it is a "slight" detune with reliability built in . I have no impressions of it yet - should be here this week as it shipped out Sunday .It happened to be the only kit he stocked when I ordered . I did ask about the Monolith kit - it would do exactly what I didn't want : Big Power . I could have gotten by very well with just a clean and lube without any replacement of the factory parts . I'm taking apart and might as well just do it .Having just the seal on hand in event of a cut or malformation of the surfaces wouldn't be a bad idea.
The BKL mount is great , I like it because it fits the rail very tightly (even on install!) I did have to use the "spreader" feature to slide it on and torqued all the cap screws to 38-40 in lbs . If it moves - I switch back to open sights as there is *no* hope short of glues and/or welding !The "no movement" built in droop compensation is an idiot proof feature I can appreciate LOL!
I've heard many good things about the Beemans and BSquare mounts working just fine . The Accushot is achieving great reviews too . I wouldn't fret over your choices unless something doesn't work right and they slip . The BKL just happens to be the "Flavor of the Day" that has merit in my eyes.

sorry so bookish I tend to be very chatty in the a.m.'s

Great shooting and great rifle "K". Sounds like you ahd the chance to really take advantage of some free time. A rested 48 is really going to shine on those longer ranges and especially with the good glass you're using. I'll bet people at the range will be surprised to see how well that guy with the weird airgun is shooting come the spring haha.

Good stuff guy

Harv

Free time is not truly free

December 19 2007, 8:10 AM

I'm actually hunting... for jobs in my free time between forum posts LOL a 401k only lasts so long when there is no other income and on a buying spree ! Wish me luck as I don't care for Ramen noodles...
The funny looks recieved while shooting off a bench with a funny looking gun are only eclipsed when the group sizes are only roughly double the size while shooting off-hand !<run on sentence deep breath> The 48 makes me look good doing it.

Y'all  may call me "Rick" because my forum name is a play on the Character (kRicktr) names others come up with for logins ...as always ymmv
