Lots of talk lately about different calibers, especially .22 vs. .25. While the .03" difference doesn't seem like much, it can be striking when you see the pellets next to each other and imagine the energy imparted at impact. Those .25's are like lug nuts flying toward the mark.
Premier .177, JSB Exact .20, Premier .22 and Webley Mosquito .25
"but I'll be needin' that gun, fer squirrels and such."
Elmer Kieth swore by the .25 caliber for small game . Seeing a .25 pellet next to the others its easy to see why . They may be a little slower but they hit hard - more so than velocity and fpe show on paper . Thanks for the comparo Bill
My father always said with airguns .22 for fur and .177 for feathers. I once asked him what about the .25? And he said HIDE and it is not hide and seek.
Now if bigger is better then .25 is it. The brits love it and they also love the .20 cal.
I am more about the .22, less velocity more impact at less travel than the .25 cal.
But then the .177 has more velocity and better penetration, but not the same knock down power of the .22
We could go on and on on this issue and my feeling is that since I shoot at 800 fps and 30 yards max my preference is the .22
warren
and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"
I want to enjoy several calibers of airguns. The .22 at 800 fps is a formidable combination even at ranges well beyond 30 yds.Personally, I would like to add the .25 to my safe as a pest buster par excellance. It's not that it has any great atvantage over .22 IMO.
as to why a number of folks have been clamoring for Umarex to get the Diana/Germany people to send .25's to the states.I e-mailed Glen and Ryan today restating that there are many who want either the 48/52 or a 350 carbine in this whopper caliber.I suggest everyone who is interested in seeing this become a reality to go to the Umarexusa website, and contact them directly with your wishes. Can you imagine the waves that a .25 mod.350 would stir up in the serious airgunning world?
I think for me it is just to own a gun in .25 caliber, basically it is something new for me if I were to buy one, I never had a .22 caliber airgun untill last summer and was sold on the larger size pellets, .177 looks tiny after you go to bigger stuff. I think the Diana guns are the perfect choice for a .25 caliber gun.
I think a .22 has several advantages over the .177. They maintain energy and velocity down range much better than .177's and always hit harder (more energy) when comparing the 2 calibers using the same model gun from a manufacturer. Look at any SS velocity tests, they speak for themselves.
There does seem to be very little difference between the .22 & .25 however as far as the #'s go, and sometimes the .22 seems to outperform the .25 in the same model rifle, but the .25 does have the weight advantage and the slightly larger wound channel. Also for me it's owning a .25 just because I don't have one. I have a few .177's and .22. Why not add a .25 to my gun rack?
Harry, someday I hope you invest in a 34. in 177. cal. This is really an impressive rifle. I will get it in 22. cal. Probably my next purchase. But I am now stocked up with CP's. I bought a lot of them recently. In fact each time I order anything, I get more CP's. I recently received cp heavies in 177. cal. weight 10.5 gr. It seems like my 34. really likes them. I am going to do a chrony test on them soon, but I think they are going to be a winner. As usual I have to comment that firing my 34 and my 460. does not have a significant difference in the smoothness of handling. The 460. just hits a hell of a lot harder.
I might get a 34 in .177 some day. You never know. Right now I find it hard to own another rifle because my wife is giving me crap about shooting indoors all the time. She just doesn't like it. So I make it a point to stay home when she goes out somewhere just to shoot more and break in the 350. This has resulted in me spending less time with her and it's kind of affecting our relationship right now I think. I tried following your good advice but some women just don't like us getting involved or spending time with hobbies. It took me about 4yrs to get her used to my racing hobby, and probably that much or more to my firearm collection, so I am afraid it might take her just as long to get her used to my airgun hobby and shooting the guns outdoors & indoors. I always try to hide from her the squirrels or other animals I shoot too!
That's pretty much the only problem I can see with owning springers - you have to break them in, which means doing a lot of shooting and avoid getting caught by the wife.
Harry, I have to sneak my rifle out of the house to go shoot it. I sit through a show like the cooking channel without complaints, let her own the damn remote etc. But I cannot have my damn gun hobby without a lot of crap. I want to teach my son about guns. Especially the safety of guns. Her idea is to never have one in the house. She just cannot get it through her female head that some jerk WILL show him a gun some day. Without any training, what is he going to do? He would be foolish enough to pick it up and not even check do see if it was loaded! Hell! I just she would learn to drive the car. I am sick and tired of having to spend $100.00 every 6 months for a new tire, all because she loves to hit curbs.
Harry, when your new Chrony arrives, just tell your wife, it is a gadget to keep the cable tv from failing so she never has to miss her soap. Please do not tell her that it is measure the velocity of a pellet unless you just like spending time in hell.
Sounds like you 're pretty much in the same exact situation I 'm in.
My wife has a fender bender every year and hits curbs and pot holes so I get a wheel alignmnet for her SUV every 4-6 mos! I drove her car a few days ago because we got 9" of snow up here in NY, and the steering wheel was all crooked and the car was pulling to one side so noticeably, I had to keep both hands on the steering wheel. She just got a wheel alignment at the dealer in August and that car was tracking perfectly! She usually drives straight for the pot holes like she 's aiming for them, and it's the same roads she 's been driving on for the last 12yrs since we moved up here.
Well I sent a nastygram to PA about my order with the chrony and other things. It's been 8 days and they still haven't shipped it. I told them if they can't ship it by Monday to cancel the order. I was also PO'd that 2 small items (cleaning patches and cleaning pellets) are now Out of Stock(!) when they weren't before. That's because they gave them to all the Next-Day folks until they sold out. I guarantee you they have not shipped out a single Ground Shipping order during the last week or 2. They are waiting until after Christmas. Bast*rds! That really pis*es me off!
