I decided to use the bipod today to shoot a few more JSB Exacts 15.8gr pellets and get used to how they shoot. I setup a couple of phonebooks and a target paper I printed off a website. I did a lot better than yesterday. The bipod seems to inhibit their willingness to shoot to the right as I had experienced the other day. It's still apparent that they like to shoot slightly to the right (compared to my other pellets) as you can see the left side of the bullseye is still untouched but most pellets are right in the center, not too bad overall on open sights.

I shot about 17-18 pellets through the bullseye from my indoor 14.5yd (measured) range and they were all pretty much right on. After the center hole got big enough and pellets started going through the first phonebook, I started aiming at the black lines. I do that a lot with this kind of target paper to see how close I can get and this way I spread the pellets throughout the phone book so they don't go through. So the 5-6 pellets you see touching the bullseye's black circle were intentional (80% of them). The inner circle is about .6" and counting the width of the circle lines on either side it is 0.75" total. The rest of the gaps (4,3,2,1) are 0.5" wide. Still I can barely see them 14.5yds out without a scope. You have to really focus and concentrate and give your eyes a rest every few shots. I was impressed with the JSB's and the bipod too! The bipod seems to have the 350 hold mastered I still hold the forearm moderately even though it's resting on the bipod. I then tried to shoot the outer line 4 and was off a little (I actually moved the last milisecond). Then line #3 - both pellets dead on! Then on to line #2, up & down, right on! Then I went for the outter circle - off a little. I then decide to shoot a group of 5 at the number "1". Believe it or not, 3 shots went through the same hole plus 1 up a little and another slightly down to the left. That's 0.30" CTC! Tomorrow I 'll try CP's because I think the JSB's are outshooting them! I actually shot a couple of Exacts off-hand too and right through the center hole. I must be getting good with the hold of the 350 (which is not artilery/loose on my gun!) because today I got a squirrel standing up and off-hand (not leaning on anything) at 26-27yds. With a Crow Magnum though. Next time I 'll use JSB's and hunt with those for a while. At 800fps my gun seems to like them a lot. Even if they group 1/2" or more with a scope (hopefully next week) at 25yds I 'll be very happy. That's still within the killing zone when hunting.

Very nice shooting Harry,

December 30 2007, 4:30 PM

I highly doubt I could see that bullseye at 25 y with open sights ! Let alone the little #'s .

I'm sitting with my finger on the button debating if the 3k in 14.3g .22 pellets I have already is enough OR if an additional 2-3k in these 15.8g Exacts would be enough ? Appears to be a worthy addition .

wow Rick

you have a lot of pellets. Another tin of 500 JSB Exacts wouldn't hurt
I usually have 1,500 laying around just in case there is an invasion of tree rats one day
BTW, if you 're going to do it, buy the 500ct tins of the Exact Jumbos. It's a much better buy than if you bought the 250 tins.

Now that I have shot over 1,000 pellets with my 350 without a scope, I think it was well worth it. Everyone should learn how to shoot their springer well on open sights before mounting a scope, even if it's 8 or 10yds indoors. I started out with 6yds until I could make same-hole shots over & over. Then I moved it out to 10yds until the majority of the groups were 3/8" CTC, and the last ~500 shots have been at just under 15yds, almost the entire length of the floor downstairs. For anything over 10yds, you 'll have to use targets with oversized bullseyes, at least 3/4" like the ones I use, or 1" diameter which are easier to see, especially when they 're all black. You can find them at various web sites and print them out. I then use my binaculars without getting up to see where my shot landed, especially when the center bullseye is black. It 's hard to see the POI. I have taken over 1 dozen squirrels with open sights from 18 to 35yds out, the majority >25.

I didn't make those shots at 25yds with open sights! Are you kidding? I 'd be competing somewhere right now if I had that great eye vision. I shoot indoors in my house at 14.5yds. There is actually a big difference between 14.5 and 25yds I oughtta know, I shoot squirrels at 25+yds and I 'm like what the hey? "when did squirrels get that small?"
Seriously though, even if I am a whole 1" off at 25yds on open sights, the pellet still hits fur and brings down its quarry.. like this morning. The squirrel was sitting on a branch facing away from me almost the same height as my 2nd floor window 26-27yds out. I was aiming at his middle to upper back (spine shot) but the Crow Magnum struck the lower back. About 1" lower than I was aiming and just a hair to the right. I also forgot that the 18.2gr Crow Magnums shoot lower and I was shooting as if I had a CP loaded (duh) in all the excitement. It still did the job. The tree rat dropped and never moved. I was disapppointed I was deprived of the "death dance" this time around Probably because his spine was broken. Actually I think he was dead before he hit the ground because the pellet never exited (a first for me!). It must have traveled up the body towards the head because I was aiming at the "hump" they make (from the rear), and in front of that hump, is usually their chest.

Nice gun Harry, You old eye's must be better than you give them credit for. What kind of bipod are you using?

Dave

well actually

I recently got new prescription glasses so now I have 20-20 vision. My vision with the old lenses that were like a 12yr old prescription was almost 20-40 the doc said!

The bipod is from Shooters Ridge, called Steady-Pod. A little pricey from MidwayUSA $38.99 + $9 shipping. They rip you off on shipping (& "handling"). I like the saddle on it. It's just over 8" long and the width just perfect for my 350's forearm.

I only paid $13.75 shipping from PA and the weight was 15X more than the 1.5lb bipod from Midway. I got the Chrony (all metal), the Chrony lights (in metal casing), a 53" hard Plano gun case (several pounds), the large Plano Shooters case (22"X14") that comes with a gun rest, 2 tins of JSB pellets (1,000ct), and some other cleaning & maintenance stuff. MidwayUSA would have probably charged $20-25 to ship these. That's one thing I like about PA - their shipping charges are fair. Well PA is closer to me too than Midway being they are in Ohio.

The shipping is always a killer

December 30 2007, 6:46 PM

and another benefit to PA with the over $149/free S&H or the 10% coupons (15 sometimes!) for the lesser amounts. Even though it takes awhile to get it shipped out .
Yeah ! thanks for the heads up on the 500 ct tins - Much better price that way on all 4 tins .
Some good tips on shooting irons - very much like instinctive archery .

I generally stay with JSBs

December 30 2007, 8:34 PM

I'll gladly give up some velocity and shoot the 15.9 JSBs over CPs any day. I've had so many bad pellets in the last box of Crosmans I gave up on them until I hear they have burried die #7. The JSB Exacts in .20 cal are killers too - much better than the Benjamin/Sheridan cylinders or diablos. Very accurate in my old Sheridans. My Diana 35 really shoots nice with the .177 JSBs.

Remember, if you need a JSB fix and don't want to wait to place a 4 tin order, Sportsman's Warehouse Wolverines are the same thing.

"but I'll be needin' that gun, fer squirrels and such."
