Chrony junkies

I wanted to post this seperately since I don't want to be buzz kill on the other thread. I've seen this happen before. People get chronographs and read every airgun they own with every pellet they can fit down the barrel.

Chronos are good to use with programs like Chairgun. They give very close trajectories for given ranges with certain pellets. Chronos help people find defects in their airguns too.

I have one myself. Even used it a few times. Just noticed it in the closet covered with dust so I wiped it off. It seems a lot more fun going out and shooting the distances on paper so that the mildots on my scopes mean something. And its easy enough to tell if a rifle is shooting off somehow even without the Chrono readings. In some cases maybe not so easy but those times are rare. All I want is for the rifle to be smooth. It doesn't even have to be twang free. Just docile enough for my intended uses. Accurate.

I'm putting this out there as the other side of the chrony coin. So that people who aren't sure if they really need to invest in this tool, can have another point of view to consider.

Like I said, I have one but I use it so rarely I need to put fresh batteries in every time I pull it out. I think I've even forgotten what it all does. No, actually I'm sure I have. lol

Junkie? Maybe, so what?

January 18 2008, 11:13 AM

To me, air gunning is a new hobby just like any other sport. If you buy a chrony because you need it, then you must be in the business. If you buy one because you actually have airgunning as a hobby than great. One of the reasons I love this new sport,is because it is like putting together a puzzle. I love to see how so many different pellets will perform at different speeds, conditions etc. I coach long distance and middle distance runners, it is also my hobby. I have very expensive heart rate monitors and computer software to go along with the training. Do I need them, no, do they give me an edge. You damn right! Besides I enjoy looking at the results. It is interesting to see a runner that ran a 32min 10k in October, now run even faster because we were able to look into detail on his training. I do not think that anyone will buy a chrony simply because he simply read this chrony thread. If he does than he is a total idiot! That is absolutely ridiculous. When you purchase a air rifle, you do NOT have to tune it, You do NOT have to buy JB exact pellets, You do NOT have to build your on target, you do NOT have to buy Pell gun oil, you do NOT have to buy a scope, you do NOT have to even log on to this forum. We do these things simply because we like to. I have only used my chrony twice in the past couple of months. If that makes me a junkie than so be it. To anyone reading the chrony post, if you buy a chrony you will not be sucked into the abyss, it is not a black hole that you cannot get out of. It is just a simple little tool to record the velocities of your guns. By the way, you can use them on center fire and rimfire rifles as well. Jeeze!

Relax Dave. You're taking a post not even directed at you very personally. Step back for a moment and think about how you're reacting toward a total stranger on an internet forum.

You took a lot of what I wrote out of context and your words seem to indicate that you chose to take offense to what I wrote.

I don't know why did that, but then you also told me that chronographs could be used for firearms as well as airguns.

You yourself used the term "newby" (god I hate that term) so take it down a few notches, listen, and don't get bent out of shape when you read something you don't agree with or understand.

And buying more and more airguns is NOT the ladder out of newbyville. Capische?

Harvey, I was just making a point the same as you. I did not take it personally. I think we both will agree that this forum should be light hearted. Thanks and have a great weekend.

You too bud

I have to give you a bit of credit though; not too many people know how good the IZH61 really is. That trigger is really quite exceptional.

A little info on the IZH 60/61 rifles: The 60 is the single shot version of the 61. Haven't seen one in years. They used to be all metal. Sights and all. You kind of have to appreciate them at their stock power level. I know folks who've tried to eek a bit more juice from them but to no avail. They are what they are and what they are is fantastic both in low power accuracy and their adjustability.

Another of those sleeper rifles is the CZ 630/631 series. About two years ago they came out with a little higher powered model, the 634. I've heard the 634 doesn't gain as much as they'd hoped (maybe things have changed) but the 631 I have is accurate on the level of the R7. Although its a much larger and blockier rifle it doesn't really weigh much. 45 inches long and a real tack driver. I've taken chippies with mine at thirty yards open sights. The trigger is a little mushy (single stage) but for how cheap they are you get fantastic accuracy in a very quiet package. Some say they had better accuracy with their 631's than their R7s. I went through three R7s and I still have my 631 if that's any indication which I prefer. Its way better than it costs imo.

Have a great (and warm) weekend

Harv

izh 61

January 18 2008, 12:50 PM

Yea, Harv I really love this little gun. Maybe it is going over board but did you ever mount a scope on it? I will have to do the research on the CZ 630/631. The more I shoot, the more I appreciate the lighter guns. I have always thought that a R7 would be a great gun. But they are expensive. Have you ever shot a Mendoza?
Thanks

Never scoped mine, but some people did. I think there was an issue with mounts if I remember...? I forget. Anyway, I really like the simple open sights on that rifle. And they work well too.

A friend had a Mendoza but he didn't really like the rifle. He had lots of high end stuff though, so that could have colored his perception. I thought the trigger was a little rough and heavy but it was pretty accurate.

I'll see if I can find some stuff about the CZ rifles for you.

cz

I just read a review of that gun, by Gaylord and it sounds like a great gun. I have to tell you I am really looking at doing more 10 meter shooting. Having to do it all over again, I probably would have bought a nice 10 meter gun over the 460. Mag. I do not do that much hunting and actually prefer targets. Harv, I do not think that gun is for sale any longer. What do you think of the Daisy and Crosman match guns? By the way, the 850 mag. is a very accurate rifle. I mean surprisingly accurate. I will have to see how this works at 10 meters.

It will be cold this weekend in Virginia Beach, with rain and snow furries expected. Feels like spring today.
Where do you live?

Woops. I'm still in the habit of reading the bottom of the threads to look for new replies.

I don't know anything about the new 850, sorry.

The Daisys and Crosman are good starter rifles. They'll get you there to see if you like it, but for a bit more you might look into the used ten meter stuff. If the rifle generally looks nice, its almost a given it'll out shoot 99.99% of any of us at the trigger. Jim E (look for his posts on the yellow forum) brings them in from Europe on the aftermarket. You can also check airguninfo.com for their match rifles pages.

Or... if you want a really great ten meter match pistol get yourself the IZH46M. Five way adjustable trigger. With the right shooter these things can win local matches. Seriously.

Central Minnesota. If you put a thumbtack in the middle of the state on a map, I'd be one of the dead people under the pin.

Cold!

January 18 2008, 8:07 PM

Harv, man, you live in a cold state. I use to work for Honeywell, and would go up to Minneapolis for business time to time. In the summer, it was pure beautiful! I went up there last, in the middle of November 2 years ago. God! the leaves were all gone, and the place was in the middle of winter and it was snowing like crazy and cold as hell.

I got back to Virgina Beach and it was a beautiful 65 degrees, the sun was shining bright and all the trees were in full color. God! I love Tidewater Virginia! Heck, we have been complaining lately because it has been so warm. Some days in the 70's.

Anyway, that CZ really sounded like a great sub for a R7. I am going to keep a lookout for that rifle in the future. Thanks for the advice.

I know where you're comin' from Harv -

January 18 2008, 1:05 PM

man I use to sling lots of lead over my chrony! LOL That and all the other
testing shooting into various objects at various ranges, all my "can testing",
etc. does come in kinda handy at times now because I have a pretty good 'feel'
for about what kinda power/MV an airgun is producing.

Now I'll do a "health check" from time-to-time, clock a new pellet and - of
course - use the chrony when tinkering/tuning/tweaking/modding this or that
airgun.

Obviously if a fella has hunting/pesting on his mind when ordering/buying
a particular airgun and he's did plenty of research and knows it should be
producing say around 18 FPE, if the one he recieves new barely makes 14 FPE
I can understand him not being happy, complaining, etc.

If I recieved a mild magnum springer that many that own one state does
around 13 FPE and mine only produced 11.9 FPE but is very smooth, quite
consistent, plenty accurate I'd be ok with that - maybe soon enough kinda
thrilled Heck I've got other airguns too so it's not a problem. Plus
later down the road when getting inside the gun I may get the extra power
back or decide I don't want it.

Chrony has its place but like brushing one's teeth 50 times a day, hanging
out in the bathroom for hours because one knows they'll eventually need to
eliminate body wastes, etc. the chrony can become a problem, a hang up.

I wish I could say things as succinctly as you.

They could delete my post, leave yours up and it would make more sense.

Thanks Herb

I use it as a tool

January 18 2008, 3:52 PM

I do a lot of repairs and mods - not just for me but for friends as well. As a result (and side benefit) I get exposed to and shoot a lot of different guns. My chrony gets used quite a bit - not to necessarily test different pellets, but to test the outcome of repairs and mods.

I generally test a gun with pellets to see which are most accurate. Then I get a chrony reading to see where it's at with that pellet. That's about it - no retesting unless I think something is up. I really don't care what it does if I switch pellets. I'm more concerned with where it goes than how fast it gets there. If velocity is on with one, it will be close with another of similar weight. At least close enough for me.

"but I'll be needin' that gun, fer squirrels and such."
