These are awesome. The rat (night vision) hunting video and the rabbit one. Some of you may have seen them on youtube. For those who haven't, enjoy! I 've watched them 3 times already

When the camera is moving erratically it's when they are cocking their multi-shot PCP's although the guy shooting the rabbits seems to have an nice rifle with a smooth bolt action, while the rat hunter has a rougher one (Chinese PCP?)
Those rats are tougher than the bunnies!
I think someone said in one of the hunting forums that the rabbit guy was using an AA 410ERB (30FPE gun). I gotta get me one of those Only $900 + $500 accessories! There was ZERO recoil in both videos. How do they film through the scope? Do they make scope with built-in cameras now? Or do they attach the camera to the eye piece and the shooter looks through the camera when shooting?

Great, Harry!

Reminds me of hunting rats at the dump back in Vermont as a teenager with a Ruger 10/22 and a flashlight taped to the barrel!

Of course I was never THAT accurate!

Doing well thank you

No I think some people only kill what they eat here, or so they say, so maybe they don't like people shooting rats either because noone eats them.. I don't know what the deal is. That 's awesome. I wish I could hunt rats like that

You can come out of your bunker now. I got you covered

hunting at a dump

January 27 2008, 6:32 PM

Hey Duncan! Oh man that was some of the best rat shooting I 've done. Not at a Dump but the next closest thing. My friend used to work at the County Transfer Station (for garbage) and he invited a couple of times on a Sunday to exterminate some rats with him that were always hanging around. That was in the very early '90's. I used my .22LR Marlin rifle back then and shot them from 35-40yds away. Had a 3-9x32 Simmons scope on the .22. It was awesome. I 'd get 7-8 rats each time. I remember one time using Ultra Velocity hollow points! They were only about 30gr I think. They did a # on the rats. They expanded too much! almost cutting some in half! We didn't have any trouble providing lighting. The place was well lit outside and the rats didn't mind it. They were used to the lights. I did most of the shooting from the car! If we got out of the car or tried to get closer they would disappear so we kept our distance. After we 'd get a dozen or more, they figured out it was dangerous to hang around and would disappear into the woods. There was also a stream nearby and we think they were using it to swim up & down the area or make their escape with it because we could never figure out where they 'd disappear to every time, or where they came from. It still makes my hair go up when I think of them 60-70 together running around.. Made me want to shoot every last one of them

no I don't know if the CCI's were widely popular in ~1990 although I think I remember them being around. I think I was using Federal Ultra or High velocity (not Hyper) or maybe Winchester X Hi-Velocity HP's. I remember distinctly velocity was 1,350fps which was pretty fast those days (like '89 I think I bought them). I don't think they started breaking the 1,500fps mark for another couple of years later. I 'm pretty sure it was a 30gr I was using.

Anyway I know the ones you are talking about. Some of those Hyper velocity ones lead up your bore badly I read somewhere so you have to be careful and spend the time to clean the barrel very well after each use.

I now prefer using 1,250fps .22LR medium-heavy weight cartridges, preferrably 36gr. I sometimes use 40gr High Velocity (~1,250) which give you more energy down range than a 30gr but I do use 32-36gr ones from CCI and Winchester from time to time. I don't really use hollow points anymore because the last time I shot a cottontail a few years ago at an angle, the exit wound was like someone took a knife and cut all along its side with entrails hanging out. It's too much for most small game animals but I do usually keep a box around

Whattaya mean No recoil???

January 28 2008, 8:13 AM

I saw recoil on every shot in the rat hunting video. You have to watch closely to see the signs of it but its there, right at normal speed you can see it. Watch the shot then back it up again. Its the same consistant movement each and every time a rat gets eliminated. I've shot enough pcp's to know they are not as still as people would like to believe. Not sporters anyway.

A great video but put that guy's rifle on a quality tripod and you would see the recoil much more clearly.

I'm not trying to be negative because its a heck of a fun video to watch. But I see the recoil whether anyone else does or not.

If you have to, slow it down. You will see the same jump-movement (scope rising off poi and settling again) just before impact each time, consistantly. Pcp's are the most accurate airguns out there but that doesn't mean they're all lazers quite yet. Consider that a ten meter pcp rifle only shoots mid five hundred fps and still has to weigh ten plus pounds to negate the actions inside it.

Harv
