Well, this morning I finally got to do a little hunting with the rws 460. I have just been using the local 14.3 crosman pointed pellets, since they are pretty accurate in this gun. I have not tried any other pellets because I dont have any other selection besides ordering off internet. I ended up shooting 3 pigeons which were very big.(crow size) I dropped one right on the spot at 30 yards. THen shot another at 30 and it flew off! Then another one shot at about 20 yards dropped and then started wobbling off and needed a second shot. I place the shots pretty well, and this is a powerful accurate gun. But I was upset that those two didn't expire after the first shot. It did end up that my gun was shooting about an inch low, and that does make a big difference. I think that if my gun was dead on, they all would have dropped dead on the first shot. I still was wondering if I should tru another pellet for the 460 when it comes to hunting. I always use the most accurate pellet in my gun for hunting, but these crosmans are still overpenetrating at close range. I was thinking about some jsb predators so I will be ready for the squirrels, and accasional opossum. Does anybody know what other pellets perform well for hunting in the 460? Thanks prieciate it!
"If Butterflies had machine guns, Blackbirds wouldn't mess with them"
At 15.9 grains it's a bit heavier. Very nice BC too so it holds up well at longer distances. Usually the best grouping pellet you can get for many guns.
Crow Mags would be nice too but they're heavy and would limit your range. If you don't plan on shooting beyond 40 - 50 yards, you'd probably be OK.
"but I'll be needin' that gun, fer squirrels and such."
Agree with Bill. Ultimately the most accurate pellet is the number one pellet and of course you know that. I would recommend a pellet sampler from Straightshooters. Sometimes the second or equally accurate pellet in a particular airgun has surprised me. I'd have to look on my chart but one of my rifles shoots really tightly with RWS Supermag pellets.
Within 25yds I would use the Crow Magnum (after doing the nutrogena soap bar test, this pellet gave the biggest cavity and largest expansion) because after 30yds this pellet loses velocity quickly and not very accurate after 25yds.
Within 35 yds I would use the predator (it expands a little less than the Crow but also penetrates deeper with slightly higher velocities)
Over 40yds I would stick to the JSBs or CPs These are great for reaching out and touching something at a distance. The only problem with using these at close range (if you see it this way) is that they pass right through small game and do not expand very much compared to the crows and predators.
Buy a tin of all three, a couple of bars of nutrogena and try the test for yourself.
My experience have been that the JSBs and CPs are the most accurate.
Good luck
(the reason I wouldn't recommend the Kodiaks is because for some reason the 460 just doesnt like them. They do not group well and have very low velocities).
I tried Gamo hunters,Gamo magnums,Chinese round nosed in my .22 460. All they did was ice pick the game and leave me chasing it all over the woods. Believe it or not, the best killer so far has been the Daisy precision max flat nosed (Wad cutter) that you can buy at Walmart for $3.18 a 250 tin. I shot a squerral and it anchored him right on the spot. I guess the flat nose exerts all its energy in the game instead of trying to pass trough it. I dont want to be graffic so I wont tell you what it did.But it sure wasnt pretty. Lets just say if you hit it halfway right,Its over. I have some JSB preditors but havnt tried them yet. I will get back.
Avery, If you can help me change my 177 brl. to 22 I will GLADLY help you w/ pell selection! Im no help to you w/ my 177 460m.. The guys here will help,, Listen to them! It still amazes me how much differant pells. shoot in a diferant airgun! Sorry Im no help,,If yours was 177 I could say KODIAK!! My 54 loves CP.(14.3) maybe 460 likes more heft?? (in 22). Lot of Bla Bla! (no usefull info) Sorry,,,Tim.
For sure, I agree that the .22 and the.177 in the same action wont like the same type and brand of pellet. The .177 460 likes kodiaks where the (I have heard) .22 460 does not like them.
