The new 850 mag. has been in the field for some time now and seems to be a great success. The rifle, originally designed for 177. cal. has had few problems however there have been a lot of issues with the 22. cal. now being sold. Seal issues and pellet loading problems seem frequent. I have purchased the rifle in 177. cal, but have been only shooting indoors due to cold weather. Since my purchase, the new Discovery has come into production. I like the 850. so well, that maybe down the road I would like a 22. cal co2, to go into my arseal. After looking at the specs I am now inclined to really consider the New Discovery. Why!

1) Rated at 900 fps vs 655 fps (a tremendous advantage as a Hunter)

2) Dual air- If this does work, and I shoot 30 shots for just 30 pumps, then great-big saving-shoot year round

3)Nice Walnut stock

4) An inexpensive CO2 adapter converts this rifle from compressed air to CO2 operation which makes it easy to fill from a standard paintball tank, offering more shots from a single fill.

5) Ability to shoot in cold weather.

6) Lightweight hunter!

If this rifle is not plagued with the problems of the 850 22. cal, then I will be giving this rifle a serious look.

Good Shooting!

I think..

they are 2 different guns and can't really be compared to each other. We need to compared apples to apples. The Discovery is also twice the price.

Anyway, Roald, the 850 forum owner just ordered an 850 .22 to compliment his many .177's. If there are any fundemental or design flows with the .22 850, he will find them and tell everyone how to correct them. He has gotten Mach-1 and B&A companies to make adapters (AS to PB especially) and then go back to the drawing board and correct some minor flows they had. I plan on getting a refillable 9oz PB (paintball) tank and an Airsource-PB (valve) adapter and shoot 450-500 pellets on one 1 fill with this upgrade, or 3X as much as 1 AirSource bottle. Also the simple spring hammer upgrade on the 850 .22 will give me an extra 50+fps so I 'll be happy with the gun in that configuration for a while.

but Dave..

the 850 .22 doesn't have any problems, remember (hmm, who said that?) It's all in my head..

Dave, why not just order the Discovery and be done with it. Then you and Bill can post your impressions and test results in March. Don't you want to get those "chery" guns from the 1st batch as Bill put it?

It's still the best deal around for a PCP gun and it's a 20+FPE hunting gun on top of everything.
Go for it!! God knows you 've communicated enough how highly you think of it.

Would have

Like I said in my post Harry, I may have, IF I had known the Discovery was coming out. The Discovery on paper seems so much more practical. I did not care to own a 850 and first, I even alluded to that fact in earlier post. However, I warmed up to the idea after many months and many good reviews. I did see, that most of the problems were with the 22. ca.. In fact the 850 forum even mentions this fact. Not a big deal, I am sure they will get ironed out. Harry, I own a 850 and like my 850. I am just tying to look at another potentially good rifle and "compare benefits and features to two guns". I do not have bias over one gun vs the other gun, as do many that have posted against Crosman.
By the way, fyi, Roald, has already posted that he will be purchasing the new Discovery as well as many of the 850 owners. He is also entertaining combining the forum to include the Discovery. I am sure his opinion will probably carry more weight to this topic than you give me.

In the meantime, I look forward to see the results of the new Discovery and try and be patient by shooting my 850 indoors. If I do purchase a Discovery it will not be until early summer.

Good shooting!

PS I would also mention the new Walther 25. cal. coming out but do not want to give Disco a heart attack, this Monday Morning.

By the way

Harry, I have not ruled OUT the 850 in 22.cal. Come summer, it may be the best thing going. Like I said, I love mine, and I am just looking at both guns. I like doing the research, and the comparing. The sport of Air gunning is not just about shooting. Al least not to me.

Good Shooting

Didn't really think of it as "cherry" but whatever....

Some folks are apprehensive (rightly so) in buying one of the first models. I was just trying to look at the upside when I said the first batch might go out with a bit more attention to QC.

Nice review of the rifle by two respected posters on the Yellow Forum - Steve in NC and James Perroti. Initial quality and performance seem to be very good.

As for the Disco being competition for the RWS 850, I reallly don't think so. The big advantage with the 850 is the fact it is an 8 shot repeater. While the Discovery can be configured to run on CO2, and the 850 can be retrofitted to run on HPA, they are different animals IMO. I will own both.

"but I'll be needin' that gun, fer squirrels and such."

Bill you may be right.....

about it. Crosman obviously has been paying some attention to
what's going on in the hardcore airgun world so they may really
try to get the first batch of Discoverys right before moving
them out the door into - no doubt - more than a few hardcore
airgunner's hands.
