so I'll sell you the book, the gun, the grips, the part, etc. for.....
only 3,4 times as much rather than 5,6 times as much as I'd sell to
an outsider or whatever.
Over the years I've noticed some really decent airgunners and some
airgunners that are the extreme opposite of that. The rest somewhere
inbetween - more not near the "rotten bottom" of the barrel or scale.
Myself and a number of others have gave airguns, scopes, parts, magazines,
books, etc. to fellow airgunners. Myself and a number of others have sold
and traded stuff giving fellow airgunners fairly good to really good deals.
I recall a fella that posted he had recently purchased a R1/HW80 and was
looking for a copy of Tom Gaylord's R1 book. I responded and told him I'd
send him the book for free. I was done reading it and didn't see it as a
big deal to simply give it away. Maybe I should have asked for $10 or so
but I didn't and I didn't feel like a sucker, fool or whatever. Since then
I've seen guys advertising the book for as much as $100! Man that just kinda
stinks to me.
One time a fella was advertising he wanted to buy some factory Cr Mk1
grips. I'd just put RB Grips on my LD Mk1 so I gave him the factory grips.
Guess I should have asked for $30 or more. LOL
I'm just an airgun hobbyist - I'm not trying to get rich, make a killing or
whatever in airgunning.
Some will get up in arms and go on and on about they have a right to sell....
blah...blah...blah.... Wish I had a bunch of airgun models named Selfish
Extreme Magnum so I could give them away to some guys!
It's called "Paying it Forward" . I applaude you Herb . Don't change your ways to fit todays greed - what goes around comes around - your payment will come back to you seven fold .
Airbehere: Great post! I recenly built a small Chapell/Church for a friend & my only attendance there was for my "Baby Girls" wedding. But I feel like I can say,GOD BLESS you my friend! My small circle of friends are people like you! Thanks for your input on my Recon, Im going now to pull that breech seal!! Thanks Herb, & keep it up, It all will come back to you!! Your REAL friend in S.C., Tim!
so what's free this week on the menu? Anything you can send me would be greatly appreciated
Just kidding. I would never ask or accept something for free. I would at least pay for the shipping if someone insisted he wanted nothing. That's the least I could do. You showed some great airgunnerer commeradery there Herb. My hat's off to you..

Being a Curmudgeon Emeritus in computing as well as airgunning I'm hoping this post brings this thread back to the top.
Some darn fine points Herb! I have no idea how many times I've passed on guns or data to where they were needed and valued without charge or for less than market value, but I can testify that, as someone has already pointed out, one is repaid many fold in return in satisfaction.
I just a few minutes ago got off the phone with Harvey after one of our marathon conversations that we both relish so much. One of the points of discussion was how satisfying we both find it to place airguns that we have enjoyed to the fullest in the hands of others that will enjoy and relish them in equal or greater measure. Ofttimes at a break-even or money lost result to ourselves if viewed strictly in a profit/loss fashion. But the satisfaction of seeing a good shooter or classic go to a home where it will be properly appreciated transcends the purely fiscal properties of the hobby/sport in the case of the dedicated, long-tern airgunner.
Only 2 days ago I made a very satisfying 'trade'. A young friend of mine (Hey! 31 IS young to me!;^)) is struggling to make it as a flyfishing guide on our local trout fishery. I've been helping him in every fashion I know how for the last year and a half. Within the last 6 months I helped him get into airgunning with very minimal costs to himself. He's raising a 6 yr. old son alone and the son 'needed' an airgun to let him shoot with his Dad when they shoot the Benjie 342 his Dad has had since a child that I recently helped him rebuild. So I traded them a rebuilt Crosman 760 for sanding the old finish off of a Benjie for me that I want to refinish. Frankly, as I told his Dad, I would have been more than happy to have made it an outright gift, but that would have served to cheapen the value had the son not learned that there is a sweat equity involved with earning both the gun as well as the use of a pump gun. This to teach Rob't. Heinlans' principle of TANSTAAFL-----There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. Tom
Tom, GREAT story! Shooting w/ my young son(21) is the most satisfying thing EVER!! Did you say 760??? Mine had real wood & I customized/tuned it when I was 13?? Chromed/ polished brl. at 13 yrs. old! I still polish my XX brls. today! Good for you Tom! Tim.
