I was shooting my 850 indoors the other day into my Crosman Pellet trap. The trap was holding up so well, and has now allowed me to shoot every day. Well, it shoots the 850 with no problem and my 34 with higher velocities. But I decided to really Push it. I went up stairs and grabbed my 460. mag in 22.cal. I was really hesitant. First of all, the only downfall of the trap is it is a little small. I did not want a 22.cal pellet being pounded into one of my walls ever though I have a heavy rug surrounding the trap. I had recently taken off the scope and have not fired any shots through the gun without the scope.

Well, I put a fresh target on the gun, zeroed in and fired. Wow, this gun is so smooth. I believe it actually has LESS recoil than my 34. The whole shot cycle is so incredibly SHORT!
Well, like I said, I was not using my scope, and I did not have my glasses on. Oh God! I did not see where the pellet went. I thought I had not hit the target! I went over and checked. Right smack through the bulls eye. I went on t shoot more pellets and still amazed at how smooth this gun really is.

Good shooting!

Be carefull with those pellets traps...

I was using a Gammo pellet trap rated for up to 1000fps. Well after 100 shots from my 460 I punched a hole right throught the back of the trap and broke the side welds. I had to go ahead and purchase the heavy duty .22LR bullet trap. Its loud but works great.

Trap did not even hit the back

The curtains on this trap slow the pellet down so much that you cannot even here the steel plate being hit. (not sure it did hit). The pellet itself (kodiack) was on the bottom and only took a small scratch. That said, I am going to buy a "Archer pellet trap". One, because I want a second one, and two, it is a little larger.
(Note) Big difference in the Gamo trap and the Crosman. The curtains make all the difference in the world. That and the fact that I doubt a 22.cal short could go through the trap.
Good shooting

ah those Kodiaks

January 31 2008, 10:00 PM

you traveled far to get. Glad to see you 're getting some use out of them Dave. Now I was thinking.. the Kodiaks don't shoot too fast out of a 460. What would happen if you tried CP's on the trap that leave the muzzle 200+fps faster than Kodiaks? Or better yet, maybe you shouldn't try it?

wrong trap

Harry, I will be using that trap for light shooting. I think the trap would handle the pellet, but it does wear out the curtain faster than I had originally thought. I have ordered the a Archer trap for the heavier guns. It is basically the same as your trap, but more expensive. I figure for as much shooting I do, it was worth the xtra dollars, and I just do not have the time with building one. However, this summer, I would like to go to Home Depot and make about 3 or them like yours to place in my Mothers yard, at different distances.
But you are right, I do not feel comfortable shooting a real high velocity pellet into that trap. The height of only 9 and a half inches also bothers me. Now for shooting my Baikal and 850, it is no problem, except the curtain wears out faster than I had thought.

Good shooting!

Traps

Martin has it right. Get a good rimfire trap and be done with the problems. 'Pellet' traps are to sell--not to use. Tom
