Distance 38-40yds. I had 10 of them walking on my lawn! I have not harrased them or made any attempts in the last 9-10 days or so. I let them get comfortable and today I figure it's time to try out the 850 which I have mastered at 20yds with a 3-9X scope. I really wanted to get a head shot so the 850 I thought was the gun for the job. The crows had no clue they were being watched. I used a different window downstairs this time to throw them off.
I put the crosshairs up high about 1" over the crows head and squeezed the trigger. I see the pellet strike the grass about 1" inch short of its feet! This is with a fairly fresh CO2 cylinder shooting at ~605fps. I was used to shooting bullseyes at 20yds but can't believe another 18-19ds made such a big difference, like about a foot! The pellet didn't even make a few inches lower to the body. I was PO'd. I guess I need to start practicing at 30 & 40yds with the 850. Moral of the story? I should 've used the 350 (with my eyes closed). Now I won't get another chance for probably another 2 weeks and the season might be over by then. Oh well, I overestimated the 850. Lesson learned.

Not to worry Harry

Here's what you do: Get a B&A AS to PB adapter and a 13 cu. in. HPA tank regulated to 1,200 psi. Install the heavy hammer spring mod and shoot all day in cold weather at over 700 fps!

Could be that temp had a factor in the loss of velocity. Could also be the range - depends what distance you sighted in the gun for. If you want to see what the pellet drop should have been, use a program like Chairgun2. You'll need to know the velocity, pellet BC and distance you're sighted in at. Then you can determine the drop at X additional distance.

"but I'll be needin' that gun, fer squirrels and such."

I know

February 6 2008, 10:54 AM

Bill, it was entirely my fault. I 'm not familiar with how the gun shoots at longer distances. I had not tried shooting at paper at anything but 20yds. I can shoot same hole shots at 20yds 3 or 4 out of 5 pellets every time with 0.25" CTC. I had not researched the pellet drop, holdover or anything, but I prefer to do my own testing at those distances and judge by myself. I 'm use to the 350, what can I say?

Another mistake I made was using Beeman FTS 14.5gr. I grabbed the wrong magazine! The gun was warm. I always keep it near the radiator so it's usually at a constant ~72deg. I meant to grab the "hunting" clip that has loaded with all CP 14.3's in it. But even with those, I think the POI would have been too low, not chest center, and ended up wounding the crow, so I 'm glad I didn't in a way.

The 850 .22 redeemed itself by taking its first victim 1/2hr later. A poor little squirrel, #17, paid for the crow's inability to get closer to my position God I hope I haven't wiped them out for real now
Distance was only 22yds and the CP went right through in the ear where the crosshairs of the Tasco Golden Antler were positioned. To my amazement the CP went through the other side. I did not expect that with only ~603fps avg. MV (11.6fpe) but we all know the CP's penetration characteristics and good Energy retention. My guess is it didn't hit too much bone having gone through the ear on entry, but exit seems to have hit bone. I have him in the refrigerator way in the back in a large ziplock bag hiding him from my wife, until my neighbor gets home from work where he will cook him and I 'll have a taste. The last one tasted pretty good the way he made it but a little too greasy for me. I 'll ask him to make a little stew this time or something similar or I 'll just give it to him cause it can hardly satisfy one person. It's more like an appetiser for 2. We are both "big guys". I 'm 6'2 210lbs and he must be 230-240. We 'll be sharing a ~1.5 pound squirrel minus the bones, head, insides, feet & tail.. not a lot left for 2 large men Good thing his wife doesn't eat squirrel. She should hang out with my wife..

Oh well, had I gotten the crow I would have left the squirrel alone but I wanted to see how the 850 performed on fur & bone and I must say I 'm pretty happy with it but I think I 'll be using it for critters within 30yds only until I get the spring hammer upgrade. The 350 will handle any and all duties beyond 30yds.

I decided a while ago Bill to go with the B&A AS to PB adapter but with a 9oz CO2 rechargeable tank from Lowe's. That's not the same as the 13cu.in. HPA tank is it? HPA is "high pressure air right? How do I get that refilled? I don't own an aircompressor. Can I use an electric tire compressor that I use at the car races? I like the idea of recharging a bigger CO2 cylinder for a couple of bucks. I have to do more research and read up on it more.. I think anything else besides that 9oz CO2 cylinder I 've seen in pics of other 850's, is just too big to put on the gun. That will give me very close to 3X the amount of shots and consistent power for many hundreds of pellets. Do you have the 850 as well Bill? I 'll be doing the hammer spring mod as soon as hunting season is over, hehehe. Can't part with my guns now with less than 3 weeks left to the season..!

no way

Phil! The 350 is tucked away in its hard case and in the closet with the light turned off! I put the lady Diana to bed for a few hours.. She 's clueless to what 's going on.

Do you think I 'm crazy? I don't want to come home one day and find the 850 dead on the floor and a big grin on the 350.. Geez.. you must think I lost my marbles or something. Those 2 even stay in seperate rooms! hehehe

BTW, here is the "Hammer" (Hammerli, get it?) with its first kill.. and if anyone leaks any of this out to my "lady" they 're dead meat!!

Yes Harry, I have a Hammer

February 6 2008, 5:32 PM

I have one in .22 also. Haven't shot it yet as I'm waiting on an adapter, hammer spring, moderator and I'm making a walnut stock for it.

I have ordered an HPA tank as well because 1/2 the year it's too cold for CO2 here. With HPA @ 1,200 psi I figure to get over 700 fps with mine. HPA is just compressed air. Any paintball shop can fill your can. I bought one that is 13 cu. in. and regulated to 1,200 psi - most are 850 psi. I got the tank, regulaor/pressure gauge for $83. Email me if you're interested. A fellow forum member did a group buy on them and has them in stock. It goes right on the AS adapter. There is an install link on the 850 forum. I plan to get an ititial fill at a PB store and then fill from my Discovery pump once I receive that.

Squirrel = get a couple, 3 and lay bacon on the bottom of a roasting pan. Add quartered, seasoned squirrel and add a few strips of bacon on top. Add potatoes and carrots and cook covered at 350 for an hour or so. Mmmm. Not greasy meat at all - very lean.

wow Bill!

You are hooked on this 850 a lot more than me and you have not even shot it yet?

I 've been reading that with the 13oz HPA tank you can get better velocities than 700fps. It looks like 700fps or very close to it, is attainable with just the AS-PB adapter and 9oz PB can with the hammer spring mod. There is a guy on the 850 forum getting 780fps with the HPA tank but he said he "tinkered around" with the gun. Still that's bordering 20FPE! Maybe he opened the valve more inside the gun to release more air?

I didn't mean the squirrel meat was greasy. It was because he cooked it with bacon fat! How can your recipe not taste greasy when you lay bacon on the bottom and bacon on top? I 'm not supposed to eat bacon or anything cooked with bacon. I have high cholesterol. Can't we cook it with Smart Balance? or "I can't believe it's not butter"? hehehe Why is it most people I talk to cook squirrel with bacon? There has to be a healthier way of cooking it and still taste good with proper seasoning.

I wish!!

February 7 2008, 10:39 AM

I wish he comes back this big Dave! I have been wanting to fire my .338Win Mag. for a long time now There are no elephants, rhinos or grizzlies around here to use that gun on. That big crow looks like it would be perfect! With a head shot of course.. If that doesn't do, then I 'll have to dig up that old grenade a buddy of mine gave me a while back. Only thing is I don't know if it works or if it's a dudd. He said it makes a big "boom", so I 've been keeping it in the shed I don't even let my son go near the shed just in case. The wife.. well.. I got insurance on her! hehehe
