Something I just noticed

How many weeks has it been that people were emailing Umarex et al for a rifle in a more rare caliber? Those threads are falling way back on the pages every day now. Not that it isn't interesting, but its a reminder that what was a popular idea when it was first addressed is not always the long term desire.

I haven't bought an airgun in a long time. I have to say that the longer I spend with what I have [now] the better I get. The more familiar with each of them. Reacquainting myself with the good ones I've got.

I have, on the other hand, been buying pellets. The experience of shooting airguns is what's fun. Its not buying a new airgun every so often. It used to be that, in a way but not any more.

I realized that each new airgun brought with it a learning curve. Sure it would shoot well, even if it needed a break in period. But it was... foreign. Honestly, I enjoyed shooting the airguns I had already built a familiarity with, much more.

I would spend a lot of time shooting the new stablemate just to break it in. Until recently I committed myself to only the most minor tweaks. The rifle felt more or less acceptable and I would move on. Maybe see if there was another "new" airgun to get.

A lot of people will buy and sell airguns because they enjoy that aspect of the hobby. They might own some model, tune it to whatever degree and turn around and sell it after a realitively short time. They might even shoot pretty damn well overall. I wish I could do that. I need to stick with an airgun for a while just to eek my best out of it. The again, that's a lot more fun for me nowadays than running after every new thing.

Its just something I noticed. Interest in 25 caliber Diana 48's waned. Just as interest has waned with any number of truly great airguns. New on the scene, before long everyone's talked out about it. We all heard, read, emailed, stared and coveted to our hearts' desires. Then interest passed.

I'd rather shoot. I'd rather shoot what I've got. One new super duper airgun might look pretty tasty but think about how many pellets you could buy instead of that fast approaching, and quickly fading modern marvel. Pellets which could make you an even better shooter with what you already have.

I bought some new pellets on the market (!) to see what they'll do in the airguns I already have. I'll post about them soon.

Harv

Been thinking those same thoughts over the last few weeks. While I would really like to own that firey grained walnutttyy skip lined checkered Luxxxxxxxxusss in a .25 - I am reaquainting with my litter of pups also. Enjoying every moment of it too.

Ordered some pells yesterday ...and today ! Who says people miles apart don't think alike ? LOL

Have some big headed AA and JSB's on the way . For the price the Napier pells may be worth some effort. Anyone try em ?

Give it up Harv! You're trying to introduce reason and logic into a pasttime that is fueled by passion and dreams! Extended to a logical conclusion such a thrust would serve as the death knell of a vibrantly growing industry. We don't want that!;^)
And, BTW, in the context used it is spelled 'eke'. Unless it surprised the He11 out of you of course.
*&^%$#! It is surprisingly difficult to ennunciate clearly with tongue-in-cheek! Tom

Eek!!

February 8 2008, 9:45 AM

I used the wrong "eke" lol. Thanks for pointing that out hehe

I'm no better than anyone else. I'll buy the cheap stuff sometimes just because it IS fun to get a new airgun now and then.

Still want that 603...

Harv

I'm on the bus with Harvey, I like the older guns and don't have a lot of interest in the "newest and fastest" unless they can out shoot my "old ladies". I can't shoot 1600 fps, but I can hit my target at 800 to 900fps every time I shoot at it. This sport is more about accuracy than range. If someone wants a kill shot at greater than 50 yards they need a powder burner or a kick ass PCP. In either case, this ain't the forum they need to see. I'm here for info about my Diana air rifles and hope others feel the same.

I hear ya Harv -

I've done been through the "candy store" and did plenty of sampling
of this and that 'treat' For awhile now I've kept my 'airsenal'
small so if a new one comes in another soon goes. Also there's no
longer an illusion that there's a "magic airgun" out there that'll
shoot way, way better than all the rest. Plus I've narrowed my
airgunning down to springers and if any pop up potent sporting SSPs
and low pumps to max precharged pumpers.

I do buy and tinker with the Chinese "assault springers" I've
gave away and sold a dozen or so of them over the last few years.
Also a couple of those B5-10 pumper mini-carbines and some Daisy
pumpers. Oh and once in awhile I'll check something out and soon
sell it like the Crosman Nightstalker and IZH MP514K - a couple
that come to mind.

Herb
