Yup, BB's numbers are right in line with my chrony data from yesterday, assuming the 46 will only do 690 or so with Hobbies at sea level.
I sure wish this data had been available to me back in December, as I probably would have made a different decision. As it is, I just got off the phone with Pyramyd after asking them to make me a fair deal on a 460 after my disastrous experiences with their shipping two 46's to me in those crummy Plano cases...at least this time I will ask them to ship a gun in it's original carton, which I understand does actually have some minimal styrofoam padding, and a second box. I'm waiting for negotiations between my rep and management. (Well, hell, you can't blame me for trying)
If the third time is not the charm, it will be the end of my airgunning career and back to powder! PCP's are out for me, just don't want to carry that stuff in the field.
Duncan: I would ask for a brand new 460 in a sealed box. I say this because if you asked for a "deal" on a 460, they will try and pass a used, returned or refurbished 460 to you and you may end up with problems again.
The factory box is fine for shipping with lots of foam, and they just put a cardboard box over it, so the colorful box doesn't get scratched or ruined in transit.

Thanks Harry, I'll have to be very careful with my wording...but, yes, that is exactly what I asked the rep for.
Hi Warren,
I have been a pilot and flight instructor for 40 years, so I am very familiar with air density. The problem was I could not translate it accurately into springer power loss because of all the other variables involved, some of which I only just became aware of, like changes in BC of different pellets with differing air densities, etc.
Looking at BB's data where exactly the same gun and pellet was used, the only thing missing is temperature and if you want to get really precise, atmospheric pressure. He could have provided absolute pressure at those altitudes on the day of the shoot. Possibly up to a 10% error factor there. If you calculate the loss as a percentage, those numbers show about 10% loss at 4500, 16% loss at 6500, and 20% loss at 8500.
I'm shooting at 5500 feet, so I should see about a 12 to 13% loss at my normal shooting altitude. I can live with that if the gun I get will do around 850 at sea level with CP's or RWS superdomes. I should get in the 730 to 750fps range. That will still give me 7-8 fpe at 40 yds. Only time will tell!
you will have a loss of %20 at your altitude with ANY airgun
not trying to be a hard asssss, but there is a finite amount of air at any altitude, sea level no problem breath all the air you want and your airgun too
did you not believe of oxygen loss above sea level? it is exponential for about every 1,000 feet you go UP
jack cousteu called it oxygen depravation and it affects humans, animals and machines
again, Duncan, I am not singling you out but others in Denver (at those high alts.) will benefit from this info with any gun
warren
ps: I do not want to be right, just correct
and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"
Duncan, Please dont give up on airguns! Pilot/Insructor/ education, ect. I think I can speak for others here Please stay! My late "pops" was a Pilot & I will never forget taking controls of his Cessena !! You have had some bad luck,Please keep tryin! BB. (Tom Gaylord) KNOWS airguns! Some here seem to me as pretty close!! If I lived at your alt. I would be thinking 460, but most probly the REALLY most powerfull 350 Magnum!! (just my 2 cents) Dont know who you are talking to at P.A.,,,for another of my 2 cents,, Paul is GREAT! I think he is ext. 231?? Have not talleked to him in mo.s, but he will "get er done" !! Good luck Duncan & please stay with us!! Tim.
for your encouragement, I could use some right now!
Yes, I have been talking to Paul at ext. 235 since the beginning. He is great to work with. As I told him yesterday, if only he had some control over the shipping dept., none of this would likely have happened.
I still would have bought the wrong gun based on my incomplete research, though. That's what I get for putting esthetics so high on my list. I'm just too old to go for these Star Wars looking guns. I really want something that looks like a high end tube magazine .22, and the 460 is it. It's actually hard to tell the 46 and the 460 apart from ten feet away, so I just hope the third time is the charm.
