I have a rws 34 which I purchased used and is 8 years old. I cleaned and lube the rifle before testing it. I tested the fps and these are my results. Using a Diabalo 7.0 pellet 952, 946, 939, 960 Rws super Domes. 8.3 pellet 879, 873,868,870. Meisterkugein 8.2 Pellet 863, 865, 851,866. Are these results the best that can obtained for this rifle and would a tune kit from JM help?
Those #'s don't look bad at all for an 8yr old 34 that I assume has been used regularly with much mileage on the mainspring. Your gun shoots right at 14FPE. That's the norm or average for a 34. It would shoot a little stronger with a JM GRT spring and smoother too.
You can get the GRT spring kit from JM for $69. Besides the spring it includes custom guides matched to the new spring and a flange washer. The custom guides make it even a smoother shooter, more than if you just bought the spring alone. http://www.airguns.citymax.com/catalog/item/251488/2514146.htm
Your 34 seems fine though but you can always improve it with a JM kit, no? I 'd say your mainspring has another few thousand shots left in it btw.

yes that is a .177. Thanks for input Harry and Warren. Leaving well enough alone for now. I am not a hunter so I see no reason for the extra fps. Was just curious to see how well the gun is performing.
Just curious Harry, but how do you judge a rife spring by age. I mean he has a 8 year old gun, but it could have sat in a closet for 7 years? It seems to be shooting great now. If it is still smooth he may have many thousands of pellets to fire from it. I will be doing a chrony test on my 34 today. I should get my Macari spring kit today and have it installed within the next week and redo the chrony. However, I am not concerned about power as I am smoothing out the gun. A side by side comparison of my 34 177. vs 460. 22. had the 460 so much more smooth. I really hope Marcel can smooth out the 34.
I don't know how you judge an 8yr old gun by its age without having to shoot it. This is what I said:
"Those #'s don't look bad at all for an 8yr old 34 that I assume has been used regularly with much mileage on the mainspring."
Basically I said if it has been "used regularly" it is shooting pretty good after 8 years... You cannot judge a gun's spring or overall working condition unless you shoot it and put it through a chrony. I know when my gun is 8yrs old, if I continue shooting it the way I have been, it will have 20k-30k pellets through it. I 've been reading that the lifespan of a factory mainspring is anywhere from 10K to 18K shots depending on the model and the conditions used under.
Yeah, the CP's history has been shady.. and its future doesn't look promising either unless Crosman commits itself to do something about it.

Note: left to go to tuner Marcelo, later bought fantastic HW 30 with Macari spring for son!
What a fantastic gun.
Good luck with the 20-30k shots with a stock spring.Between a friend and myself we have 5 34's 3 with broken springs with less than 5k shots using RWS superdome pellets.Replaced with J.M. products (spring, seal and lubes)with about 50 fps.loss, much smoother shot cycle.
Gary
Gary, After shooting those numbers I knew and have been rationalizing that the gun was too fast. My 460 is smoother. Marcel will replace with a Macari spring and I hope to loose at least 50ps. I think RWS is using a stretched spring on their guns to sell to the American power "bigger is Better" crowd. What a shame we cannot buy directly from Europe.

Later I will purchase the Moderate (not the Power)Spring kit from Macari for the 460.
Please DO post those numbers! I'm very intrested in your opnion of how that Maccari kit changes things.
I am totally falling in love with the new to me/used Model 34 that I bought from Pamona Airguns! Even though I already have a Model 40 (with the Maccari GRT mainspring only) and a new "Stock".22 Model 36, the new model 34 is just enough "different" from the others to be like a different gun! I am experiencing good velocitys from the 34 as mit is and when I get my new Scope mounts (The old adjustable Gamo mount keeps loostening up)I should be able to revel in it's potential accuracy.
Of all the .177's I own, only the Maccari sprung 40 and the stock 34 have been able to shoot the Crosman 4.5 grain Eagle Lead-free pellets Supersonic! I'm kinda disappointed that my stock R-11 dosen't make enough speed to push those lead-free lightweights past the sound barrier. VERY impressed with that 34 though!
I dunno but I just may want to mod the powerplant on this 34 for smoothness sake. I could even consider de-tuning it a little to get a buttery smooth firing cycle... I have ALWAYS asmired the 34 because of the quasi-Kentucky Squirrel Gun look about them.Long and lean, I could see Daniel Boon filling the meat pot with one these days, LOL!
I did try the cut and step trigger modification shown on the RWS 48/52 Forum and now that I shimmed the sideplay in the "Used" trigger blade, I have nearly gotten my trigger set. The new "tight" T01 trigger dosen't set as crisp as the Rekord, but will adjust to a much lighter and nice and clean breaking point. With the amount of gun movement after the sear trips I can see areal need to steady the rifle further, I plan to add some sort of Trigger Stop (even if it's simple as only a rubber stop block or better yet, an adjustable screw thru the trigger guard. Something HAS to be done in that area!
Sorry to babble on but as you can see I am pretty excited about the little .177 Model 34. PLEASE do post your results when you get them done OK?
BTW, the Model 36 in .22 is a real powerhouse! Operates and soots nice!

P.S.
Hmmmm, I wonder what the .20 caliber/5mm Model 34's shot like? They only produced the caliber for a short time and aparentlly it didn't sell well. I suppose the PIA to buy "quality" .20 ammo caused the poor sales of the caliber/gun combo for Diana?
ZVP - I have the GRT kit in the D40 .177 and an Arctic spring on a GRT kit in the Panther .22 . The kit makes for a much smoother and quieter firing cycle . Didn't have a chrony before doing the 40 so I can't comment on velocity loss or gain - after the install to now it has "freed up" an additional 25-30 fps (840's immediately following and now 865-870) and *very smooth* . The Panther didn't lose any "real" fps - 714 vs 710 . It is dramatically better feeling through the shot cycle.
Yea I'm torn, do I keep it "stock" for a while and see how I like it or add the JM kit??? Heck I even thought what about a de-tune? I still dunno but I DO know that this 34 is growing a very soft spot in my heart for it!
BTW my 40 has only the grt spring and it seemed to gain power! Funny thing is that the spring is a take-out given to me by a popular "Tuner". The origonal owner complained that his gun lost power. Goes to show that they are ALL different, eh?
I suppose I ought to get a chrony if I'm going to play the spring game. Most important to me is the accuracy, Power is good but repeatability is far more important. The added smoothness an aftermarket spring and kit gives also addes greatly to the enjoyability.
