It's a setting in your popup blocker . Adjust it to medium or higher . I'm running Vista for an OS . Tools>popup blocker>settings>medium>ok .
Similar in XP . Seems to work well.
Stay please? You've got posts way back in the pages and good info to share .

Medium on XP

February 23 2008, 8:18 AM

The castlemedia are near impossible to block, anyway, so I am used to closing them from the toolbar. It's the big jobs that say "Skip this Ad" that bug me. Also, the integral ads at the bottom of posts. There was one that I was really interested in and thought the poster had imbedded it. When I went back to link to it, something else was there. It's the price we pay for the "free" internet. Just the same as why newspapers are so cheap.

Having been away from this forum for a while, I've noticed that it's changed a good bit in more ways than one. Used to be a lot more technical-oriented. No offense, but sometimes it reads like a blog. Not that it's running me off or anything.

I changed my pop-up blocker to high with no effect, I see the pop-ups blocked header, but the posts still fade to the full page ad after 15 sec or so....Really, REALLY annoying.

The yellow forum doesn't do this, but some other 54 forums do...go figure

Please ZVP, can you comment on this new "feature" HA!

none here

February 23 2008, 10:19 AM

just the castlemedia crap, but in addition I get spyware installed, you can find it using the task manager function. Every time the castlemedia thing comes up I get a bit of spyware called IEXPLORER.EXE too. It watches what websites you look at and reports back to the server it came from. This can lead to a lot of the pop-ups that are being seen here and why some see them and some don't.

Please Don't Go

February 23 2008, 10:56 AM

It's not the Forum.
It's got to be your system.
If need be, upgrade IE, (or as advised earlier) switch browsers.
If you are not experiencing this problem elsewhere, eventually you may.

my opinion

Don't confuse iexplorER.exe with iexplorE.exe

February 23 2008, 11:23 AM

I saw this with task manager and said, aha, close that sucker down! Pop goes the internet. iexplore.exe is a valid program. Guess the other by Adclicker is named to fool you into thinking it's from MS.

Ad complaints, please read.

February 23 2008, 1:21 PM

NW 54 gives me this space for free. They support giving Forum space away by selling advertizing. I have no control over who NW54 sells their space to.

The Forums you PAY for have less or no advertizing but at a monthly fee. Since I'm getting this space for free it's just a bother to contend with.

I suppose I could just shut the thing down if it's such a bother... I sure could use the time people don't see  that I spend, proofing posts and cleaning up this place in many other fun ways!

Personally, I just spend a second or two and just click the ad's off. No biggie. I feel the FREE and UNLIMITED space they give us to collect all this information and airgun stuff is worth a little finger excersize! It's a minor but frustrating little quirk of dealing with NW54's very charitable offering.

Sorry if it chases anyone off.

 ZVP

No problem with the ads, just a bit disconcerting

February 23 2008, 4:48 PM

New things take getting used to. I have pretty bad floaters in my eyes. They are a nuisance but you learn to live with them. I see these pop ups as about the same. At least they aren't like the links the porn sites use where you about have to drive a stake through the keyboard to stop 'em!

What, me worry???

Re: Ad complaints

February 23 2008, 5:04 PM

Hi Dave,

I was aware of the free nature of Network54 forums and the price to pay, and I never minded the little embedded ads. This is something entirely different, since last week.

"Personally, I just spend a second or two and just click the ad's off"

Well, I have to do that EVERY 15 seconds during the ENTIRE session, making it almost impossible to read a thread. I just get to the first post and scroll down when it goes back to the top, fades out, and fades into the full page ads. It takes another 3 seconds for the "skip this ad" banner to show up, when I click it I'm back at the top of the thread and just as I get to the post I want to read, it does it again.

To me, this is hijacking, not pop-up ads. It really is impossible to use the forum in any meaningful way like I used to. As I said earlier, changing pop-up blocking levels has no effect.

Maybe this is temporary, like PBS's marathon twice a year...

Hope so, 'cause I'd like to keep up with the collective.

D.

try this

February 23 2008, 5:15 PM

when the add comes up , go to Internet Options >Security >Restricted Sites >Custom Level > High . You could also try adding CastleMedia web addy or Domain to the "Sites" button under Restricted Sites . Many ways to skin a squirrel so to speak.
Just trying to help - I don't have popups at all . I can even shut the embedded ads down with SpywareBlaster (freeware from Javacool)

Rick,

There doesn't seem to be an URL for the full page ad itself. Also, I just discovered I can't post replies when 54 is on the restricted list...seems I have to remove it and replace it every time I want to post. Not sure if there's a setting in the list of secutity items that addresses this. Still working on it.

Hi Rick,

"did you try right clicking the ad ,scroll to properties ,copy/paste ad url to restricted list? "

Yes, I did, but when I looked at the URL, it seemed to be the same as the thread I was just at, so I didn't paste it. Hmm. Might as well try it next time.

Thx

D.

Re: Ad complaints, please read.

I sometimes get the large "Red" ad also when I first check in or sometimes when I return to check things from another site (ie some auction sites) but it sounds like some of you folks get peppered with em. Believe me, I get just as frustrated!

Geeze I don't know enough about computers to even try and suggest a solution! Maybe some of the suggested fixes might help? Frankily, I have a simple security setup and really DO need to upgrade myself!

I'm really really sorry if the ads are causing problems for anybody! Hope there is a way it'll work smoother for some of ya!

Thanks ZVP

February 24 2008, 10:35 PM

I understand perfectly that there is no free lunch. I just want to thank you for the work you do on this forum cause it sure has some great posters and information on it. Having access to all you guys is worth closing a pop up.

I'm glad to find out that the pop up stuff is from castlemedia and not dangerous to my PC. I use a Macbook running Firefox browser. I get them most every time I log onto the forum, but I just hit the back arrow and they disappear--not much trouble.

Regards,

Charlie

check your temp internet files for the cookies generated by the popups, and block the urls listed there.
Here is a list of urls that I found and blocked:

context5.kanoodle.com
pagead2.googlesyndication.com
www.google-analytics.com
b.casalemedia.com
c.casalemedia.com
an.tacoda.net

No more Castlemedia popups or any popups for that matter so far, and no more IEXPLOERE.EXE either

I'm not casting aspersions toward ZVP, I appreciate all you do. Just got frustrated with the casalmedia and constant barrage of full page ads. I'll try some of the solutions mentioned here. Appreciate the feedback and suggestions. I'm not savvy to lots of the tools and traps on the net.
