I decided to post my ruined stock photos under a new thread so others might avoid the problem. The cheap Plano cases have a design flaw that can damage certain airguns that happen to fit in them a certain way, as I learned the hard way after two RWS 46's arrived damaged. If the gun shifts inside the case due to handling, one of the "PillarLocks" edges can ding the stock as shown.

Muzzle postion neccesary for the contact to happen.

Damage by "PillarLock"

Damage by BOTH upper and lower sections of "PillarLock"

The fix is very simple: Get some hard foam, like from a mouse pad, cut it to fit over that projection on the side of the "PillarLock", and glue it into place with contact cement so that when the case closes it doesn't get pinched, but covers both upper and lower sides of that PillarLock. I just happened to find a tubular piece of black foam like from a hiking stick lying in the street, cut 2 one inch pieces off, and just slipped them over it...pipe insulation would probably work equally well. Problem solved!

My case also suffered crush damage, and my feeling is that these cases are not up to the job of anything more than protecting your gun in the back seat of your car or truck...any heavy object falling on the case most likely WILL damage the gun inside. That said, for only $38, they are fine if you realize their limitations and don't use them to ship in without LOTS of extra protection. As for the airlines, FUGGEDABOUTIT!

Good Shooting,

Duncan

I have used them before Duncan

but cut out the inside foam to place STRAPS which I glued to the plastic and bring out to secure the gun, they work perfectly also reuse the cardbox the Plano cases came and use them to the Plano inside the cardbox

no problem with UPS shipping my guns to tuner's and back to me. Next time will jerry rig another Plano case I have to ship the wood stock separate from the metal assembly since just received my 34 and the wood stock has a fisure crack from the trigger screw to the front of the wood, obviously shipping damage

I have 4 Plano plastic cases from $20.00 to $40.00 each and the "pillarlock" are dangerous for the wood stock if it slides inside the case

warren

and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"

Extra precaution

For any kind of long term storage, even in a case like that, I use the Sackups and other brands of gun socks. Have saved me from more than one gun safe ding on occasion, as well. Not a panacea but just a bit of extra margin. Plus they do work to keep the finish nice.
