Well, almost for free.I wanted to pass a long some thing that really helped me get an extra 30FPS out of my.177cal RWS45. Do you ever oil the inside of your barrels?? I did, until I found out that doing that reduced velocities by 30FPS.I have an RWS 45 that is very conststant from shot to shot and last Summer used my chrony to measure velocities.I was getting 880fps .One day I cleaned the barrel an oiled it. next time to the range it was running 850. Took it home and cleaned the barrel using rubbing alcohol on a few patches that evaporate right away and ran a few dry patches. My velocities went right back up to 880 consistantly. Now I just use the rubbing alcohol/patch leaving the barrel clean and dry from there..You guys might want to give it a try and see if it helps you out.I think its great to add 30fps for that simple and easy cleaning tip. Rubbing alcohol costs what $2.00 a quart? All comments welcome .Good Luck with it .

Knowing the proficiency of most of these guys in here, they will need to know the brand/type pellet you are using, as well as the diameter of the pellet and pellet skirt.

Even I (a rookie), am guessing the increase has to do with the pellet/skirt “gripping” the lands in the barrel.. If you are using Crosman Premiers…I just had/returned a boxful of .20’s labeled .22.

Give some more specific info if you want an answer/analysis from the pros.

One question

February 27 2008, 4:37 PM

After you oil, do you run a dry patch or two through it before you shoot it?

If not you really should. I doubt a pellet gun would have enough power to cause damage but a "real gun" can be severly damaged and even kill you if you shoot it with oil in the bore. Just in case you didn't know and all that stuff:)

oil

I dont know if i agree with the alcohol bit but it is a known fact that the friction of the oil slowes down all moving objects. Tom Gaylord had this on his blog not long ago. Also that is why most car manufactors recomend 5-30 or 5-40 viscosity oil now. It helps cut down on lost horse power and lost fuel aconomy. Marvin

Thanks for the tip

I usually use something like Sheath in my rimfires. I would be very careful with an airgun due to the seals. It bonds with the metal and should not leabe signifcant traces. The pellet is probably pumping out that oil on a microscopic level as the skirt sweeps the rifling. Now PCP shooters do oil their pellets to keep the bore from rusting since compressed air sheds moisture. It would be interesting if you would take those pellets and lightly lube them instead of the barrel, then see what it does.

What, me worry???

Red Feather Gaylords blog was just into that subject 1 or 2 days ago thats when he for warned those that would do it for the first time to beware that the fps would be lower not higher. Marvin

Had me scratching my head here, wondering WHY?

Reduced velocity
You probably expect increased velocity from oiled pellets, but that's not what happens. They will either shoot at the same speed as dry pellets or the velocity will drop a little. Oil works well on relatively slow-moving objects such as lawnmower engines and door hinges, but on high-speed objects like pellets the surface tension can increase friction. That's one reason that claims that any oil-based product can increase velocity are false.

Thanks for the interest. I would like to add a few things. My tests were done with the same tin of pellets. I think they were JSB blue label s100s (please dont hold me to it ).I always follow up with dry patches so you know wasnt wasnt leaving large amounts of anything in the barrel.I was pretty suprised to see numbers go down with the oiled barrel. It does seem to matter for sure.It was also nice to see the numbers go back up after the alcohol patch and dry patches.I like the alcohol on the patch becaause I feel it helps to grab dirt, lead, dust better than a dry patch alone but does also evaporate to leaving the barrel clean. It seems to be working well for me.Most guys wouldnt mind picking up that extra 30FPS . I suppose just a clean dry patch would do it to but again .I think the alcohol is useful cleaning aid.
