Finally got my 460 yesterday from PA, and wonder of wonders
IT WASN'T DAMAGED!!!
You all are probably bored to tears with my horrendous saga of damaged stocks from PA, but I MAY have finally gotten a gun I can keep.
Shot several dozen pellets so far, did OK with stock sights. 5 shot groups at 10 yds: .25 ctc, 25yds .75 to 1 inch, rested.
Put the scope on her today, and did 1.75 inch at 30 yds and 2.5 to 3 inch at 65 yds in 1-5 mph wind. All with JSB exacts. Seemed to get the best groups with a strong hold...strange.
Well, that seems pretty good to me out of the box for accuracy, BUT...I was 14 inches low at 17 yds from optical zero, already shimmed 0.04"! I can't get enough elevation out of the CP 3-9x40 on an Accushot one piece, so I will have to get a BKL260-D7 or maybe a B-square adjustable to get that much. That calculates out to 22 inches of total droop at 17 yds if I'm calculating it right....didn't take out the shim and test. Scope's 2" above bore, a little to high for my taste, but still.
That sure seems like an outrageous amount of droop for an underlever, anyone else optically zero their scope and test on a 460?
Well, whatever, I'll chrony it next, but the moderate drop at 65 yds indicates I must be getting at least 750-780 up here at 5700 ft...maybe even better. .. Hard to tell when you can't zero!
Can't complain about fit and finish, nice wood, sharp checking, sounds and feels good....maybe she's the ONE!
I recalculated the figures, looks like I will need 18 to 20 inches of correction at 17 yds, that's about .125 at the rear ring, over four times what the BKL will do, so looks like a B-Square or custom is the only answer. I'm going to have to re-zero the scope and remove the shim to be sure. The compression of the plastic shim makes an accurate estimate of shim thickness difficult. .04 is only a guess. Of course, if I don't mind having the reticle close to it's limit the BKL will do fine, but I don't think that's a good idea.
Update on the scope problem. On BB Pelletier's advice, found a hard plastic washer in my grab box, ground it down to fit between the scope mount and the rail, 0.045 thick, left the other shims in the rear ring, for a total of about 0.090 droop correction. This is a temporary fix until his mount becomes available, I know, but it IS working and the scope IS staying put. Removed the large diameter screw at the back and made sure to lower the stop pin into it's hole. It's too difficult to get the rail off IMHO, because those philips screws are staked and will be ruined in a removal attempt. (that's straight from the gunsmith's mouth at Umarex)
SOOOO....
Went out to the range, zeroed at 17 yds no problem, 1 inch high at 30yds and 1.5 inch low at 65 yds! I thought that was pretty darn flat for a springer.
0.625 inch at 17yds (Hobbys)
1.06 inch at 30 yds (JSB's)
1.44 inch at 65 yds (2 flyers not counted)(JSB's) all 5 or 6 shot groups. Honest! I have the pics.
Chrony data: 740 to 765 with JSB 15.8 gr.
852 to 880 with RWS Hobby 11 gr.
THIS IS AT 5700 ft!!!!! 40 degrees. That may translate to 950+ with Hobby's, 860 with JSB's at sea level. Either that or my chrony's wildly optimistic, but the ballistics seem to corroborate those numbers, and it was where expected with my Ruger .22 pistol.
WOW! I never thought I would get this good of a gun with all my previous frustration. Obviously my breech seal is NOT leaking (yet).
I want to thank all of you for your encouragement, without which I might well have given up my venture into the middle tier of airgun-ness! My experience with the 1077 was dismal, and after TWO RWS 46's damaged in shipment from PA, I was ready to quit and just go buy a .17 HMR from Savage or CZ at Sportsman's Warehouse.
THIS GUN I WILL KEEP! Hell, it only took 6 months of research and effort. (;>)
Now I can actually go out and shoot what I decided to buy this gun for, and expect to kill it with one shot. Plus all the fun plinking at warm shook up beer cans, clays, film cans full of talcum powder, etc., not to mention blowing a few powder guy's minds with it!
Are you talking about a RWS 460 or a 46. You know they are two different airguns. Judging by those impresive crony #s you are talking about the 460. And BTW congrads on getting the only good 460 in in the US .
I have the same problem with the 460 and a Sports Match adjustable mount. it translate to some SERIOUSLY barrel droop that the mount is incapable of fixin or OPERATOR being stupid
Chisco31:
those little tiny screws on top of the rail seem to be RIVET's or that is what I read on some post
Why?? is it that UMAREX cannot explain the problem to RWS (Diana) and come with a fix for the USA market so that we can use SCOPES without the dammed droop in these air guns
warren
PS: I know I an ranting just pissing in the wind but it makes me feel good once in a while
and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"
Like Warren said, but to find them you have click on "gun parts" (or parts don't remember the exact link) on their web site. Look at each page and you 'll find them.
