Last time I wrote on this forum it was about 350 vs. gamo hunter extreme, well that was hands down 350. I liked the power behind the 350 (mine in .177) but it was a bit hold sensitive, and it did take some playing with to get the right mounts and scope to handle the recoil but overall nice gun, but after a month of use started thinking .22 cal because some the birds and varmits were not droping like I would have liked, and my velocites were droping some from avg of 875fps to 845fps with cp heavys but still not much to worry about. Anyway took the gun back (cabelas has great customer service) and ordered the 460 was thinking patriot but worried about the recoil, well any way it came in yesterday right off the bat put the chrony to it just for future ref avg was about 830 w/cp's man loved the way the gun shot very smooth and accurate after 30mins of sighting and playing with her I was ready to hunt some, first bird droped like a rock, loved it went ahead check on chrony fps dropped some to avg of 790fps started to worry a little due to I belive martins story, well went to a friends house later we were shooting late into the night getting really tight groups at 30yards he was really impressed with the gun as well so well that we took some targets out to 50yds still very nice groups around 1.2", but a sixpack later we noticed a huge change pellet was dropping we were having to shoot above are target from 1"-2" all the way to about 6". I was'nt to happy so the next morning checked fps which was at 595 thought krap Im going to have to tear into her, well started with the breech seal I pulled it out to find it rather distorted so I poped in a oring from a fuel tester put it back on chrony and got 710fps roughly. I said theres the problem so later in the day went to home depot to look for a decent seal found a faucet washer in plumbing with roughly same i.d and o.d had to cut a little to shorten but made sure it was about twice the length so it would have a tight fit, fired through the chrony again now its right back to 830fps and then some. The whole thing will take about 1min if you have the custom seal ready to go, since you dont have to tear the gun down all you need is a small small flat head to pull the seal out. Well hope this helps anyone that runs into the same problem, and that problem aside the gun is sweet to shoot I think its even smoother than my 34 w/ the JM spring and lube.
with the 460. I have started to NOT shoot my 460 because of drop of power, the mount experiment did not work (Sports Match), scope was unable to get itself aligned @ POI, etc
ordered the GRT kit, then another mount and will most definetely change the breech seal
what I do not get is the issues' most people are getting with the 460 someone is sleeping at the QC on this gun
warren
and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"
low 20s FPE and is quite consistent. I've put at least 500 pellets
through it. I've been thinking about the breech seal - figuring,
guessing it's probably the same seal as used in a 48/52/54.
I was pondering what I'd do if the power started to drop and figured
I'd shim and/or go looking for a seal at the hardware/auto parts store.
Now that you've posted/shared I know for sure what to do! Thanks!
Got a new camera on order so will be a little while before I can post, but if you can invision stacking a nickle and three pennies together glue them and drill about a .2" hole through it theres your seal. The nickle part is what got damaged what I didnt understand was why not stack 3 or 4 nickles to make for one stout seal, but thats what can be made from some cheap washers or seals and so far mine is holding have about 100 pellets through her by the end of weekend should have alot more.
Also have a theory on why the seal might go bad noticed at one point when i closed the cocking lever up fully closed I was able to move the piston up with my thumbs about 1/16 if not a full 1/8 of an inch, and given the design of the seal I think that spells trouble if does'nt close all the way, but if you cut the new seal to about twice the length of the original I think you take care of that problem as well.
Wow, Ed, that's THICK! I thought these things were about 0.040!
See my post on WhooHOo:Finally....I'm so happy! Maybe I won't have to worry about this for a while. Still want pics tho, and I suspect some other folks do too.
