I just found out that the reason my 460 wont shoot worth beans is because my barrel crown looks like a drunkin chinaman that was in a big hurry to crown 8000 barrels a day did mine. For this reason, This will be my last RWS purchase. I can get this from a $74 chinese magnum airgun. If I have to become an airgun smith to get a decent airgun I will pay unfinished airgun prices (under a $100, not $ 350 to $600) . This is an airgun outrage !!
Send that rifle back to Umarex and have them either recrown ot or give you another. That should fit under the lifetime warrentee of Diana for them to do that.
You know, stuff happens. We've read it about many fo the great rifles at one time or another. Look at the venerable TX series.
I'll bet that someone posts here with those ever sought links to simple home solutions for stuff that falls through the cracks sometimes.
Sorry to hear about that.
I would definitely call Umarex and let them know about it. Demand a new barrel or new gun. Be firm with them and I think you may eventually get the gun you paid for.
Hey there Harry, Yea,I called Umerex, left a message and Ryan called me back. He reassured me that even though my particular 460 is a non warrenty demo they would take a look at it and if in fact it came from them already screwed up they would repair/replace as needed. I will jerk the scope and mount off of it and pack her up for shipping today. I hope this airgun dosnt have to go up and down the pike 14 times like Martins did. I do hope they take the time to take a real strong look at this 460. Because it has other issues besides the crown. We never found the crony. But Pops 350 should not have so big a volocity edge that it does over this 460. Dad has an old RWS 45 that will smoke this 460 also.IMHO this sould not be.
Warren,To answer your question about the crown. You look at the barrel crown. The bevel should be perfectly even all the way around the bore . If the bevel looks thicker(or wider) than anywhere else around that bore it is uneven. This means the thinner side is touching the pellet last as it exits the bore. And it means air (in an airgun) is escaping first on the side where the bevel is the most wide. This uneven exit throws a yaw on the pellet. And all this yaw on the pellet can do is translate into inaccuracy at the target. That being said, My bevel was fat on one side and nonexistant on the other. Like the guy that was doing the crowning came from the side instead of straight into the bore.
I shipped the 460 out late yesterday. MAN, $23 plus. Another reason to learn to do my own airgunsmithing. Right ? I wrote all the wacky things the 460 is doing. I hope they dont just recrown the barrel and lube it (like Marty) and think it will all go away. I would like them to bust her open and take a hard look at the internals. IMHO something is wrong in there. Thanks for all the support guys. And a special thanks to Ray for sending me those free breech seals out of the charity in his heart. And another thanks to JohnPA for giving me informative personal service. When he starts charging and got feeling he will (rightly so) He will be the Up and coming airgun Guru. And Ray may end up the custom parts maker.
I am hopeing not to have to work John to strieghten things out here. But let us know how you tune went. I hope This Umarex thing doesnt turn out to be a useless three ring circus.
The Umarex saga is still playing out Ray. I think they will just crown the barrel and send it straight back to get it out of their hair. Im sorry, I just cant see them doing anything more than a substandard incomplete nonsolution here. Just judging from what I have been hearing.I know that sounds like a negative attitude. But I will keep my chin up and hope for a suprise.
