Tom Anderson sent me these links buried in another thread.

http://www.network54.com/Forum/405945/thread/1204150381/Making+Plastic+Front+Aperture+Sight+Inserts%3E

http://mechanicalphilosopher.blogspot.com/2008/02/making-plastic-front-aperture-sight.html

Thought I’d post them out in the open in case someone could use the info.

This was extremely interesting to me.

I am still waiting for a Beeman Sport Aperture rear sight. I have never used a clear/round insert on a front sight, but at the price here (free) they are definitely worth a try, not to mention you can modify them to suit your taste, also free. I’ve seen it said that once you try them, you’ll never again be satisfied with metal.

There is a thread here (week or so ago), on open sights with pictures. I noticed a lot of the pics showed these type front sights. I can’t wait to try them.

There is another one out there were they pressed rubber o-rings in between plastic for the front apeture .That way you could adjust for differt lighting and distances . Marvin

Thanks, I may be needing this info

Just picked up a Daisy 853 w/o inserts. Rather than buy some I may see if I can whittle something. I don't have all that equipment. Funny, he uses several thousand dollars worth of machinery to make a $5 part.

Yeah. It does look like overkill. The thread folk are more in my tool shop category. A drill with some washers and sandpaper. But when you throw in the “customized” option, it’s priceless.

Plus I think that guy is selling them, so he wants you to see that he ain’t just jacking around.

And forgive me if I’m beating a dead horse here, but Tom’s links/help really opened my eyes.

Tell me, is that place what I see referred to here as the “Yellow” forum?

ctruth

ps: I've found some great stuff in my wifes sewing box. Some of the clear buttons with tiny holes in the center fit almost perfectly. And I have some DVD plastic case inserts that look very promising as sight fodder.

The 'Yellow Forum' is James Kitchings Airgun Forum @ yellowforum.com. and is a member of the network54 family. It was created by James (now deceased) as a replacement for the original Airgun Letter Forum when Tom and Edith got tired of the abuse they got from their 'guests' and shut it down. It has probably almost as much traffic as all other airgun boards combined tho it isn't as dominant as it once was with the proliferation of new fora. Tom

It's one of those that I have yet to unveil, if ever.

March 6 2008, 7:46 AM

Especially since I have a bigger, better purchase en route. Maybe something for down the road. She's also interested in archery and I'll be looking for a decent recurve to start her with. (Let's not get into this bow/that bow, please!)

Plus, with the weather warming up, we've got new fishing tackle to explore. All else goes on hold when the fish bite.

You have your priorities right from where I sit!
The end of the Brown trout spawn was the factor that allowed me time to concentrate on airgunning again. But now the Grass Pickeral are spawning and on the feed and the Bass and sunfish are coming out of hiding on warm days. A short prospecting walk along my favorite stretch of river last week revealed a big school of yellow Suckers preparing for their spawn. Watching them for a while I finally spied a couple of trout in the 4-5# class hiding among them as well as a Bass of @ 3#. If you've never had a lowly Sucker of 2-4#s on a light flyrod then you still have a surprise in store!
I love my river! It is grab-bag fishing at its' best. A strike can be anything from a Chub to a 10# trout, Walleye, any one of the 3 species of the Black Bass family to a record Tiger Musky. (Note: I AM not one of those who has landed a 10# trout even tho I've had them on.;o() Tom

I have no link but even if you just super glued a o-rig to plastic it would work. I just saw a advanced version of this on Gaylords 10 mm rifle blog . If it was not this last one it was the one before. Marvin

Marvin

Checked out the blog...

Thanks.

Yes, that could work. Matter of fact, I like it better than the drilling and sanding bit. Not to mention the "finding just the right kind of plastic" scenario.

I gave it a shot or two, but was not happy with the results. I even found a button that was darn near perfect, only to have it shatter when I pressed a drill bit against it.

The two I finally made (I admit these were not labor intensive, and were just cursory tests), were disappointing.

One thing I learned was that the crowning of the aperture is extremely crucial to the sight picture (Duh). I began to respect why that fellow in the link was using such sophisticated equipment, because ordinary drill bits won’t give the required result (as he did state that he had already found out). Unfortunately some of us are too dense to believe a thing until we see it with our own eyes.
But I'm not being too hard on myself because several in the thread said they had achieved success.

Thank goodness someone has discovered that flattening an O ring between two pieces of plastic eliminates most of the above problems.

That will be my next little project.

Thank you.

Ps: I found a site that has a 10 set of clear inserts for $15.00
http://www.nealjguns.com/ss_store/Inserts-front-sights.html
That’s my final backup.

Never give up

March 7 2008, 8:47 AM

Im glad it helped . Let me know what the end result is. I have been toying with the idea about a rear peep for the p5g mag I have . Some sort of little insert for the rear sigt sence it is not removeable. But I have that on hold sence Im makeing that 1377 crosman in to a long barrel and mount a 3-12 bsa on it . The crosman had a little metal strip with a hole in it for a rear peep that I might be able to use . Just a thought. Marvin

Re: Never give up

Good luck.
Lots great ideas in here!

The only real air pistol I ever owned (I also owned a super-el-cheapo-crapo that doesn't even deserve mention), was a .20 E series Sheridan C02.

I was into powder then, so I considered it a toy.

Well that inexpensive "toy" was right up there with my Ruger Mark I Target for accuracy!

Even 20 years ago, that was an eye opener for me.

A while back someone griped about field stripping a Ruger. What a beast! Do that two or three times, and that alone justifies going air.

PS

March 7 2008, 10:35 AM

Regarding field stripping. I just recalled a cover story in a gun magazine several decades ago.

The picture showed a guy sitting with his back to the wall with his pistol stripped on his workbench.

Somehow, a huge deadly, pi##ed off snake was also coiled on his workbench, just beyond his gun parts.

True story? I doubt it. Anyway, the gist of the story was, of course, that he had to reassemble the pistol and shoot the snake before being fatally bitten.

Looking at the picture, I remember thinking “If that was a Ruger Mark I, his time would be better spent kissing his A## goodbye.

hehehehe

I need to try the o-ring idea as well...

I've ordered the 10 set of clear inserts for $15.00.

http://www.nealjguns.com/ss_store/Inserts-front-sights.html

I figure I'd spend that much on an assorted bag of O rings anyway,
(plus the labor- I charge myself $120.00 an hour.)

These are 18mm dia. and I'm not sure about the width. If they dont fit the slot, they can more than likely be pushed in and secured by the knurled threaded ring.

I will let you know if they work. Real bargain if they do

Thanks

Melloroadman, reporting as promised…

Thank you for your input on behalf of making inserts for front sights.

As I stated, I had already ordered the 10 set of clear inserts from Gunsmithing,Inc.

As suggested by you, (it kept bugging me, because it seemed so simple), I did attempt to make an insert consisting of an O ring sandwiched between two pieces of plastic. I found an appropriate pack of O rings at Home Depot for a few dollars.

Half way through the project I abandoned my efforts. The problem was that the apparatus would not fit into the slot at the top of the sight hood, therefore the plastic “sandwich” would still require center drilling and “rounding” in order to fit in through the back of the sight tube.

I could foresee that, using the tools and materials I have at hand, the plastic was bound to become scuffed and scratched, which would be unacceptable in the sight picture.

I work very well on larger type projects, but I am not too adept at working in miniature. Now, if we were making something like say, wheels for a catapult, I’d definitely be your man.

Happily, the 10 set was a $15.00 godsend!
10 clear inserts with apertures of varying sizes, beautifully crowned. At 18mm dia. and about 1/16 thick, THESE ARE TOO LARGE DIAMETER FOR THE 350 SIGHT TUBE. Big Deal!

The material (whatever it is), is very soft. I feared putting anything like a screw through the aperture hole, it would have definitely distorted the hole.
So the downsizing procedure had to be done by hand. No problem!

1) Clean aperture with alcohol.
2) Apply masking tape to both sides of aperture and razor trim excess.
3) Using a mill file (this stuff is really soft), hand mill until in
the ballpark-then use sand paper to complete sizing.
4) Remove masking tape and clean with alcohol to remove tape gum.
5) Place the aperture in the tube from the rear, and insert locking ring.
That’s it.
Estimated time: 25 minutes tops.

There are two “nibs” on the inner sides of the hood. The knurled threaded sight ring will press the aperture against these nibs.

You will need to cover the top slot in the hood with a thin strip of tape to block out sunlight.

Right now, I’m using the 2.4 mm aperture. This thing has improved my accuracy 300%. No more stupid “steeple” front sight. How the hell does anyone over 40 sight a bullseye on a needle?

The inserts could probably easily be “tinted” using a felt tip marking pen …and, you could even use the plastic inserts WITH an additional standard metal insert……
Uh oh..here we go again,….

By this time it had become personal Marvin. I was on a mission. I had made up my mind that I was going to fix my EXISTING front sight for less than $20.00. How dare them sell me a $500.00 gun kit w/o sight inserts!
The scope was returned for refund).
