EdK - hope you don't mind .
I got an RWS 460 in for some work after I finish some other things. Yes, others are already waiting on me, and they'll get theirs shipped back first. This rifle is probably the last one I'll be accepting for a while, until the other work is done. Anyway...
I always un-box a rifle as soon as it arrives. I check it for any shipping damage, and for velocity so I'll have a record of that when tuning-time comes. It's standard procedure.
Well, this particular 460 was sent here because the velocity was reported to be very-low. Although I'd suggested to the owner that he might want Umarex to have a look at it first, he decided to handle it this way--he wants a JM kit in it anyway. Good enough!
The velocity was in fact low--very-low. The first thing I checked was to see if there was a breech seal in place--yep, it was there and it looked fine. But, a better look at the consruction of the rifle with a Min-Mag flashlight told me a poor seal at the breech could still be the problem. It's 'loaded' or held shut with a very-small spring, and there's no tension adjustment on the arm of this under-lever, like there is on the somewhat-similar RWS 48/52/54 sidelever rifles.
A quick check might tell me if seal-issues were ultimately going to be the problem, and I'd rather know it now ("ix-nay with the suspense"). So, I cut out a flexible spacer and dropped it into the breech--it was time to re-test.
That was it. The velocity of mid and light-weight pellets immediately increased by 200-250 fps. Woah--that's what I call a success.
The rifle will get more than just a spacer before it's done, and I already have the planned-fix firmly in mind. The point for now is that I know it CAN be fixed, and how.
I also wanted to alert others here to the nature of the problem if they also run into it. Less work for me??? I'm not worried--I have plenty of other things I need to do, and I can't fix everything out there anyway.
Bottom line: Got low velocity on YOUR RWS 460? Check the breech for a good seal, or a lack thereof.
Happy Shooting!
