Herb, see my post on Doc Beeman in the 460 thread. The whole HW hype got started by the good Doctor, and has been perpetuated ever since. For 20 years or more the Beeman-HW guns were the staple and standard of the American airgun industry, and as such were the only real quality airguns that many shooters were exposed to. As a result, they became the mythical creatures that they are today. It is true however that the older HWs were very good guns, especially the low-mid powered ones like the 35 and the 50/55 rifles. The level of fit and finish there were only bested by the FWB and Webley, and for shooting manners they were at the top of the heap. The model 50S is probably the best light sporter ever made.
I have more than a few HW guns, and I can say that none exibit the flaws mentioned, poor quality, or trigger problems. The Rekord is a very good unit, with few that are better. The match triggers on the FWB guns for example, and the design used on Crosmans MK1 & 2 pistols is still one of the best ever. If you read carefully, many of those comlaints can be traced to user error. Either they didn't know how to adjust the trigger or tinkered with things that should not be tinkered with if you don't know how, or just plain abused the gun.
