I have never shot a tuned airgun but most of my powderburners are somewhat customized and all have had trigger jobs or quality triggers installed. I have a 52 in .177 and a 350 in .22. I am considering getting one of them professionally tuned. Which model would typically benefit the most from a tune and lube and why? Who would you recommend to do the tune and why? I know there has been some good threads lately on magnums and velocity that I have learned from. Being at 7000' I am not willing to give up a lot of power as I lose a great deal to altitude already. What are the benefits of a basic lube and tune that I can expect? Thank you in advance for your replies.
Smoothness of both the cocking and firing cycle. Depending on the gun it could lose or gain a few FPS. The real gain is in civilized behavior. The gun becomes more pleasant to use, quieter and it's easier to shoot accurately because it is less harsh in all apects. In a word it becomes 'friendlier'. HTH, Tom

should be quite noticable in cocking, trigger and shot cycle. Actually
noticable to quite noticable depending on gun. There may or may not be
more power depending on gun, what the owner desires and the knowledge,
skills, etc. of the tuner. There may be additional costs to get what
you want - also the gun may have issues, defects, etc.
All tunes and tuners aren't the same - some are very knowledgable, skilled
and have all the tools available to do just about anything including making
parts, cutting and rechoking or choking, stock work, etc. Some go through
and over the action from end to end. Some shoot and chrony the gun before
and after.
There will be cleaning, checking specs, filing, lubing, etc. There will be
installing new parts, seals, maybe adding buttons, maybe recrowning, maybe
transfer port mods, adding new improved fasteners, etc.
The tune should improve reliabilty, longevity and can improve accuracy.
There should be noticable improvements - sometimes quite noticable in some
guns. Usually full magnums don't gain much power - also any gain may not
come until a few hundred shots or more.
Either rifle would benefit - maybe the fixed barrelled 52 first.
Ed K., Paul Watts, Jan Kraner. Ed K. is known as the "Diana tune man" -
many have posted positive about his work. I don't recall ever reading a
negative post.
is all about "attention to detail" and I mean even the smallest detail. he got my 40 and 2 days later E-Mailed me with Chrony #'s, how the gun shot, what he reccomended for tuning the air gun with price's, what was worth doing and NOT, parts he was using, brands' of parts, etc., etc. and more etc.
for crying out loud, I did not send him a $2,000.00 air gun but he treated this air gun like such and for a fair price
unfortunately, he is not taking any more air guns until he gets finished with the ones he has right now and that was what he told me 2 weeks ago. call him or E-mail him to see if he is ready for your air gun

PS: Ed K. is the tuner for me and I give him 2 thumb's WAY UP
and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"
You.ll notice a change in both of them by having a Macarri spring kit installed but I personally think the 48 will give the most change. All the 350,s I,ve tuned feel smoother after a hone, lube and custom spring kit installed but are still a bear to cock. The RWS 48 usually turns out alot smoother in the firing cycle and the cocking weight is easier.I,ve never really lost any fps on either of these rifles, maybe slightly if a new piston seal is installed (which I fully suggest)but after the break in period they usually gain more fps.The tunes are all about how much you want to spend and what you want from the rifle.I mostly hone all the sharp edges in the main tube, polish all parts that interact with each other, polish the spring ends and properly lube the parts. You can get alot more done but, you,ll also pay alot more.John
even thou Ed K. tuned my Model 40 which is a $180.00 air gun a year ago, John from PA tuned my 460 which is a lot more $$ than the 40
same attention to detail from John and cannot be more satisfied. question; one took 3 months for the tune and the other took 2 weeks. same results from 2 different people, one is a PRO tuner and the other just another forum member, but which is best?? come and shoot the air guns and find out

PS: answer; John took 2 weeks

Hey Warren,Tim here. I dont know diddly about tuners. (only what I have learned from others here). I trust my friends advice. (here at D.W.). I know there are alot of "tuners" out there. Im glad to hear you finaly got your 40 back from Big Ed. How is it shooting? Also how is your 460 from P.A. doing? I have never had a gun tuned by a profesional, just a de bur & redneck tune Ive done myself. It does make a differance! Tim.
