Well got one on a lark, Now I want to smooth the shot cycle,
its a bit harsh, got a bit of a twang and other than oiling the leather piston the tube looks dry as a bone.

This action comes out in an no intuitive manner, it's different
I am at the hesitative stage of taking out the trigger group
and weighing the consequences of applying tension to the rear of the plastic safety to remove the two pins that hold both the rear metal shroud and safety. HELP !

I might be too close to the forest to see the trees, here is
schematic:
http://www.gunspares.co.uk/showcatimage.asp?id=24394
Somone might see something I'm missing.

I am in the analysis/paralyis Syndrome.

Thank you

IF I can be of any help 2 U

March 24 2008, 8:13 PM

Hi Sylvan,

I rebuilt one some years back that had been abused through neglect. There was sandy grit in the trigger unit that had cause horrible wear on some of the parts. A friend's dad had bought it at a yard sale for $35 and had me go through the gun. I milled a couple of parts that were beyond repair and made him a new quilted maple stock.

They are very nice little guns when clean and cared for.

My advice when taking anything apart is to take photos or video tape EVERY parts as it comes off the gun....EVERY PART...if taking pictures (hopefully with a digital camera), number them starting with 1 and progress, then when you go to reassemble, follow in reverse order...if you don't have a digital camera (even a cell phone camera or a $30 cheapy), get a tape recorder and take verbal notes...I do that even when using a camera...video taping is nice cause you get to see things as the actually come off and you get to hear your voice for the audio notes.

Work in a place where you don't have to clean up the parts each night...they need to be placed in order as they come off and left that way for easier reassembly...I have a 3'x3' rubber pad that I put parts on, but you can use an old beach towel or blanket so that they don't roll around.

If you need help beyond this, I'll try to be of service anyway that I can.

Remember...you are NOT in a race to see how fast this can be done...study your pats schematic...have it printed out and next to you when you tear the gun down....go slow...document EVERYTHING anyway that you can...and don't be afraid to ask questions...you will LEARN the gun in the process and have fun...makes you feel closer with the gun when you hold and shoot it….it is a bit like bonding with something that love (silly as that may sound).

Don't stress...just PROGRESS...relax and enjoy your great little 50.

Good luck...

-Curtis

warren

and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"

Tear dn and lubed 50TO1 per Curtis instructions

April 4 2008, 10:09 PM

Hey Curtis,

Thanks for all yer help. Followed your advice, took some pics
then tore into it, cleaned it up internally, lubed it using JM
lubes, Spring looked good and since I had no replacement I just tared it and reinstalled it. The trigger assembly was a bit
tedious but given a bit of patience and figuring how the safety
spring works I got it back together.
Rifle shoots smooth and I think it's gained a few FPS. I intend to chrony it in the morning.
love that tap loader.

Thanks for the advise.

Good job Sylvan!!

April 5 2008, 1:42 AM

I am happy to hear that you got everything going good! It sounds to me like you hit a home run with the teardown and rebuild. I am sure that your gun loves you for the JM tars and lube!

I am anxiously awaiting the chrony numbers and you are right on about the "trick" loader...another one that I really like is the system on the Diana 46 Stutzen.

You have a heck of a good gun there my friend, a real keeper....OH, I wanted to ask you now that you have had your gun apart and successfully reassembled - do you feel "closer" to the gun when you shoot it - like, does it "speak" to you? No, I am not nuts...laugh...I mean, do you feel a bond that was not there BEFORE you worked on her?

Again, a darn good job well done and I'm glad that I could lend some help!

Underlevers,

April 5 2008, 2:47 AM

Curtis,
My experience really started With the STUTZEN in .177
I liked the feel ,looks of that rifle and it begged for a peep sight. Just didn't look right with a big ole scope on it.
the only peep I had that was waiting for a gun was the Mendoza
Luck would have it that the front sight was tall enough for that sight, works well, not a Williams/Beeman but it does the job.I got this 50TO1 under the assumption that it was a regular 50,too late by the time money changed hands. Thats ok
the 50TO1 has more power other than more refined lines of the 50.I tried a peep sight on this rifle but the front sight is
to low, need a taller sight, barrel has the parallel grooves
and clamp sight looks tall enough but not tall for mendoza.
Thought of making a muzzle break that was dove tailed for a 3/8 sight then I would not have to modify the barrel.

I feel at one with most rifles I toil over after tearing them apart and reassembling them tweaking here and there to improve
the firing behaviour and smoothness, I'm no expert but have delved in the gun field for 35 years, just finish rebuilding an old HW30s my favorite rifle. ya know the short piston with
the leather seal.

Thanks again

Sylvan

I hear ya Sylvan

April 5 2008, 7:31 AM

The old original 50s are nice guns too, but you have a winner in you 50T01.

Those little HW30s are great little guns! I had the complete action from a Weihrauch HW35 including the Rekord trigger unit that I bought at a garage sale for $18 as I didn't have a $20 bill with me. It was all torn apart and in a box with no stock and there were 2 pins that were missing - 1 that holds the front cocking arm to the breach block and 1 that holds the trigger unit in the trigger housing block and the trigger unit was completely pulled apart and all in pieces...it was crying out for help!! To make a long story a tiny bit shorter, I polished the heck out of all of the metal and did a really nice nitric acid-based rust bluing job on it, just like ya see on the old Winchester powder burner rifles. After I got the gun blued, I fabricated some custom parts, and then I began a hunt for good stock wood that was befitting of this great little gun.

I haggled and fussed for almost a year with a guy that had a to-die-for BEAUTIFUL piece of Exibition Grade Wild Black Cherry wood with this ridiculously extreme curly-figured grain that he was saving to half and make 2 traditional pre-Revolutionary War-style Pennsylvania Long Rifle stocks. So after almost a year of bi-monthly calls and begging and $400 later, I had half of that blank; this wood that was almost too beautiful to cut into. I got my hands on a used HW35 stock and put it on my stock duplicator along with this god-sent cherry wood blank and started in. When all was done, I had sanded it down to 400 grit and I applied boiled linseed oil for a finish that I buffed to the beautiful glow that only traditional oils can really give ya. God it was BEAUTIFUL and shot like a champ....now after reading all of that....get ready for this one....my ex took it and gave it away...didn't sell it....she GAVE it away when we broke up just to P-SS me off!!! Aggggggggggggggggggg.

Anyway, enough of that.....

I will have to go through my archive of airgun stuff. I seem to recall that there is a small company that does custom front sights to customer's specs. I don't know what they charge, but I DO rememer that their work is REALLY nice. I seem to recall them doing work for some of the Palma Team. I DO remember that they are located in Ventura California, USA (I used to live there so it stuck with me - laugh).

I'll see if I can find that info for ya.

Again, I am glad that all went well on your overhaul and I can't wait to see the chrony numbers!

-Curtis

why bother with a Beeman ?

April 5 2008, 8:53 AM

Williams has more than one type of sight that will fit the rail on that gun. The Beeman units are made by Williams but sold at inflated prices. Check the Williams site for more info. Crosman also carries Willams peeps.
Williams made a sight that fit the top-mounted rail on the Diana guns at one time, I don't know if that model is still available though.

Why bother with a beeman?

April 5 2008, 10:55 PM

Curtis,

I had the same thing happen to me during a divorce.
Sure cost me a bundle in loved toys.

Thanks for taking the time to look for that site for the sight.
Did you build your duplicator, or is it a commercial model? I have entertained building one for personal use.
I just can't carve worth a darn. I have been looking for a
post war 27 stock for a couple years now the one I have is broken at the wrist. Got a couple scam answers to WTB, never
could give me much info or price on an inlet,Now if I decide to have a piece of wood carved I would change the configuration of the stock to a palm swell left hand abreviated cheek piece etc.Do you do any outside work or is just for your pleasure?

Dave,
Thats a good looking 50 and that Williams sits good and low for the existing front sight.
Thanks for posting the pics.

Why bother with a beeman? $ 18.00 bucks diff.

April 5 2008, 11:15 PM

Just checked Williams prices, they have not updated their
website since 2007.

Mod# 9687 FP AG TK (high line of sight) 82.50
Mod# 14170 FP AG TK ( low line of sight) 82.50
MOD# FP AG ( NO TARGET KNOBS) 70.95

Dave,
