ZVP (Dave) A while back you asked that I post my chrony results with my MZ detuned 34. I apologize for not getting back with you. I have been enjoying the gun so well after the tune, that I really did not care about the velocity. It really is two different guns since the tune. However, I did a chrony test today with cp lites and the result was 760 fps. Interesting is the fact that there was virtually very little spread in shots. I mean really nothing noticeble. In fact I thought maybe the chrony was off, as each shot was 760. Every 5 or so shots it would deviate about 1 ft per second. The biggest spread was one shot at 5 fps. I hope to get more results in this week with different pellets, but this will give you an idea of a good tuning. The gun now shoots much more smoother than my recently acquired R7,(which now is also getting ready for a tune). Marcelo really knows his craft.
One more benefit of the detune was not only a shorter shot cycle and more accuracy, but the cocking effort was significantly reduced! I guessing here, but would say at least 10lbs, which makes the gun very friendly especially when shooting many shots. Unfortuneately most people will not have the benefit of taking a test drive on a detuned gun. If they did, I believe that a lot of 34 owners would see the benifits. IMO
Every day it seems I see a string that starts "Here's how to get a few more fps from....." Don't have a detuned 34 or an R7, but my 631 is easy to cock and has little to no bad behavior. Too bad they didn't make that one (or the 634) in .22 or .20.
Yes the CZ 630/631 rifles are very accurate .And with a washer, new spring and some inside and outside piston polishing you have a serviceable small game gun. They are factory drier than a popcorn fart lube wise.I shoot crows ,magpies and grouse with my son's.177 They are still around $160 here in Canada.Don't think they are imported into the US anymore.Canada models have the under 500 fps spring but easy to boost up to 625+ fps or so..........Harold
I love my detuned 34 so much that I dropped off my 460 with MZ. We both had a discussion about the detuning for this gun. Marcelo highly recommended this, as this was my strong desire as well. My goal is to have a very accurate 25 yard gun in 22.cal.! If the 460. turns out to be as smooth as the 34. I will have one hell of a gun. Really looking forward to this. The high velocity boys are probably breaking their water over this but that is ok. I respect their guns, hopefully they can respect mine as well.
I agree with you on the Detuned 34.I knocked mine down 5 coils as per MZ's sugestions and I love it! easier to cock, fireing cycle smooth, and a pleasure to shoot.Still looking for the "right" pellet.( shoots most of them great!)Whood a thunk it ?Getting about 830 fps avg . with cp lights, waiting to get some mid weight pellets soon.
I knocked mine down 6 coils and the cocking effort is amazing! I will be tuning detuning my 460 22.cal as I mentioned, and hope to transform it into R8 so to speak. Just think a gun more powerful than the 34. yet not now as harsh as the Mag.with easier cocking and a smoother shot cycle.
Dave
I think that the majority of people(myself included) have fallen into the "speed(fps)trap"when they get into airguns.I just makes sence to take the harshness out of it,and get a more plesant, acurate gun out of it in the process.Detuning it dosent it will be any less of a "varmit"control tool.Used my 177 34 to remove some killer squirrels for a client yeserday. One shot, one kill.I dont get these jobs often, but I now have a perfect tool to do the job.Dosent mean I cant use my other airguns ,just I have a prefference now for the detuned 34.
Your 34 sounds like a dream to shoot. 6 coils less, shooting at 10fpe must have transformed it to a different gun for sure. Do you shoot it with a scope or without? I bet without a scope it would still get excellent groups at 10m. Was there any trigger work done to reduce the trigger pull?
I 'm planning on getting a 34 and de-tuning it slightly down (a couple of ft-lbs) to about 12fpe like Vince did to get a smoother shot cycle but still have the power to take out a squirrel now and then at 25yds if need be.
As far as those who want the "Magnum" power out of their guns, they use those guns for one purpose only and that's hunting usually at longer ranges. I have received many e-mails lately from 460, 350, 48/52/54, and even 34 owners, and have come to realize that most of them did not buy those guns for shooting paper. Some have pigeons or crows out at 50yds, others have large fur bearing creatures they want to get rid of, or bag one for dinner, and others just want to be able to take down an occasional squirrel or cottontail at 35-40yds quickly and humanely. Most or all of these Magnum gun owners, have at least 1 or more less powerful gun in their collection that they enjoy for target shooting and in some instances those lower powered guns are detuned as well. I for one enjoy shooting my 12fpe gun for hours at a time at 20yd targets and paper and use the 350 for hunting. I plan on getting more low-med or medium powered guns because they allow me to target shoot longer without fatigue and are a lot of fun when you get same hole shots, something that is more difficult to accomplish with a magnum gun consistently. I don't think we have too many people here that are all about power exclusively on this forum, but if we did I 'd respect that. Now if someone bought a 20fpe gun to get rid of mice or target shoot only, we 'd advise him and move on. There is room for everyone here with different tastes and reasons for possessing high, low or mid-powered guns. That's what makes forums interesting. If it were all about 1 or the other, it wouldn't be as fun and educating.
Harry, you are right! The 460 and the 350 are about as good as it get for 50yds and above for a springer. I would imagine that for shooting crows at distance the guns are ideal. Especially for country boys like Tim, that have some open space to shoot at those types of yardage. I am a city boy and have morphed into a 10 meter shooting (throwback from my younger days). After shooting Marcelo's R8, I fell in love with a gun in that range. Any type of hunting I will do in the future will be at about 25 yards. I am hoping the de-tuned 460 will be a good gun for that distance in 22.cal. Yea, I will be shooting with a scoop. These old eyes aren't getting any better even with drinking carrot juice each day. I do shoot my HW 30 tuned by Marcelo with open sights at 10 meters. A real lovely gun to have some real fun with.
Good luck with getting a detuned 34. You will love it!
