Hobbies?

Aren't those a brand of pellets? Well, I like rimfires and black powder guns, although I don't get to the range often enough. That and making sure the kids get through school.

So many hobbys, so little time

April 4 2008, 5:16 PM

Too many. Airguns are my #1 hobby now but I have done or do things like woodworking, carving, home remodeling and general making stuff and fixing crap. I play guitar (not much anymore) cut, split and store firewood for my home and maintain my 10 acre property. Golf and fish but not so much anymore either.

Curtis's deleted post

April 5 2008, 2:54 AM

Curtis has replied (with title "Ok guys, don't laugh at me TOO much, but I love:"):

Shooting and repairing/upgrading airguns.
Fine woodworking - high-end custom furniture & cabinets, gun stocks.
Fresh and salt water fishing - going to Ensenada this July hunting BIG Tuna and Billfish.
Engineering - technical/chemical/mechanical.
Reverse Engineering- technical/mechanical.
Upgrade Engineering - technical/mechanical (taking something and making it better and/or more efficient).
All things computer/technical .
Most all things relating to Sci-Fi .
Keeping my dedicated computers running SETI .
Political Consulting - too much stress to keep doing this; this year is the LAST TIME around the block or Stephanie will leave me!
Restoring muscle cars and adding some high-tech twists - never get to do this anymore (big sigh)
Don't laugh at this one, but I really like hanging out with my new found friends at The Dianawerks Collective - I'm serious guys.
Buying and Studying College and University courses on video-audio tape/cd/dvd from "The Learning Company" and “The Great Courses” – History, Science, Classical Music & Literature, Foreign Languages (European & Asian) as they relate to global history.
Helping young kids discover the fun of education AND being out in nature and learning to respect it & live with it there is more to life than video games; even though I do like them.
Writing a book on "Amature Gynecology as a Hobby" - just can't seem to do enough "field research" to get past the writing the first paragraph.

My thanks to Robert

April 5 2008, 5:41 AM

I sincerely thank you so very much for your assistance Robert. I ususally type my posts in a MS Word document and save them until the site actually records the post and then I delete them off the Word Doc. here on my local side the next day; I failed to follow that proceedure for this post. I didn't have my keystroke logger running either so my double fail-safe was a double dud! (laugh)

So let me see if I can add a bit of fun, flair, and formailty to this:

A-hun-huk-hum (clearing my throat and taking a fold of my jacket's lapel in hand while waving one finger in the air)

Let it be known to one and all, that on this 8th day of April in the 2000 and 8th Year of our Lord at 41 strokes past the morning hour of 5, I thank Sir Robert once again, in the name of postarity, in the name of those future generations of Dianawerk Collective readers who shall, when speaking his name aloud, remember him as a "man of letters" and hail his marble likeness for his unwaivering commitment in maintaining the integrity of these hallowd halls of archived intellectual discourse!

And so, by the power vested in me by Diana, our beloved Goddess of the Hunt, I dub thee Sir Robert - keeper of the archive; I personally set myself to one knee with my head bowed in deep reverence for your heroic act in salvaging the verbose rambleings of this rural bloviating Babbitt; and airgunners of the world now a-bed, shall think themselves accursed they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap, whiles any speaks, who blogged with us upon Sir Robert's Day!!

Laugh - hey, that was fun!

Seriously, thanks again Robert...that's keeping on the ball!

In sincerity I remain,

-Curtis

Hobbies...

April 4 2008, 7:25 PM

Drag racing, SCCA road course racing, competitive shooting (National Matches service rifle), carpentry, computers, chess, and I love books. Gave up everything but the last 4 and my airguns since having kids 14 years ago. Now I get to share the remaining hobbies with the kids so I don't miss the others at all. Still attend the events at Road Atlanta so I get my fix that way too.

April 4 2008, 8:49 PM

I deleted a duplicate post and must have somehow gotten that one as well. Not sure how I did that.

Sorry about the mistake Curtis.

Russ S.

Just re-read this, so two of them disappeared???
I saw two copies of BBgunBob's post so I deleted one of them. I was sure that I saw two because I read them both clearly before doing anything. No idea how the others got caught up in that. Did anyone else see the duplicate or is something messed up on my end?

Ya know, sometimes wierd stuff just happens. There's no rhyme or reason. It just does and its better to just forget it lol otherwise you'll go daft trying to figure out what happened.

So you accidentally deleted me. Not the end of the world. I probably just said something verbose anyway...

RUSS - U R right, there was a duplicate post

April 4 2008, 9:14 PM

No big deal...

I think that I can do it again from memory and be pretty close.

Hey, back in 96, I was running an adult website with two of my College buddies...late night I would MOD the site and have to delete things that were just TOO bad to let through. Just to tickle my own funny bone, I used to edit certain parts of pertty graphic posts between guys and gals...between adding and deleting certain parts, you could make them SOOOOOOOOO funny to read that I'd get rib cramps from laughing!!!

Again, don't worry about it partner, I'll probably do it over tonight or tomorrow.

Hobbies/Running

April 5 2008, 5:20 AM

Have been a avid runner since High School. Knee surgery slowed me down a little, but became a Nationally certified running coach and love to give back to the sport by coaching others. Hope to get involved with a good kids program. And teach them the benefits of a healthy life style and the wonderful sport of running!
Maybe teach some about the great sport of air gunning to boot!

Good shooting!

Kinda off topic for shure

April 5 2008, 6:27 PM

To Mr Tom,Harv.,Russ,& others here that have put up with me sneaking in posts on other threads about "Ring a Ding" 2 strokes. While sitting here waiting for the latest posts just now, I looked thru my newest Cycle World Mag. (came today). So much is happining in the four stroke world. From front page to the back, for the first time I saw no 2 strokes. I knew this was going to happen, nontheless,it still saddens me. My grand children may never know the sweet smell of "bean oil" at the MX track. And oh, what about that sweet sound only a well"tuned" 2 stroke can sing?? I guess Im old enough now to say I have lived thru an era. I will never forget 2 strokes as long as I live. At least many are still around,& I still own a classic!! Tim.

I hear ya Tim

April 5 2008, 6:41 PM

Had a Kawasaki H-1 that I restored and sold that about 8 years ago when my son was born. Gave up riding cycles then as I had 2 kids and didn't want them to grow up without a dad because I liked to do something dangerous. Last 2-stroke I'll probably ever have but it was sure fun. Would like to some day get an H-2 or, maybe a Z-1. Like old airguns, I love the muscle bikes of the 70's.

Old Muscle!

April 5 2008, 7:17 PM

Hey Bill, If Im not mistaken, the H-1 was the Kaw. 500 triple, the H-2 was the750 triple "Death machine" LOL! Both were great at the strip, but dont try to turn at speed!LOL! The Z-1 (901) 4 stroke was a bike way beyond its time. Many advanced features back in the day. And it acually handled pretty fair. I remember those days vividly my friend. I still have my little 77 RD 400 twin "ringer". Just under 5 K miles! I just the other day saw a MINT Z-1,,Kinda like an older Webly Patriot?? Thanks Bill for the trip down memory lane,& thanks Russ for letting me start this thread so we could share our other interests. A thread like this alows us a little insight into the lives of others here that seem to share many common interests besides our first love,Airguns. Tim.

The H-1s were the terror of the stoplights in their day. With the exception of the '72 model when Kawasaki replaced the CDI ignition with 3 sets of points that were a HUGE PIA to keep working as they should. They were dogs compared to the electronic ignition models.
I was selling Kawas in '72 when the H-2s came out. Couldn't let prospects take an H-2 for a testride---had to take them lest they wreck it and hurt themselves. With two up it was a nightmare trying to keep the front end on the ground when demoing the acceleration. Even with one aboard shifting into top gear at the upper end of the 4th gear RPM range, which was + 90-100MPH IIRC, the front wheel would climb waaaaaay too high too quickly. They were not a 'good thing' for inexperienced riders and even those with a lot of miles under their butt could get in serious trouble with them far too quickly. Biggest maintenance problem with them was the donut holes in the seatcovers caused by fear.
Hang onto that RD-400 Tim. They're already quite collectable if well maintained.

Hobbies---lessee:

Still have a couple of bikes in the stable. Small ones. Both '74 Hondas, a TL-125 trials model for the woods and a CB-200 for errands.

Airgunning of course. Shooting, repairing, modifying, trading and collecting.

Flyfishing, flytying, rod-building. Have became a real sucker for fishing for biiiig trout in the Winter when they are concentrated by spawning activities. Almost all of my fishing these days happens between Nov. & Feb.

Modeling, designing/building, from tiny, sub-gram indoor rubber powered models to lightweight indoor RC and outdoor RC & free-flight of all persuasions. Sorta collect diesel model engines. Just like to fool with them mainly since they are such a challenge. They are true compression ignition engines unlike full size diesels which use glow-plugs to get going. Was a bit of a pioneer in the use of electic motors to power models and still use them in preference to ICs on models.

Fooling with vintage outboards as previously noted in another post. Sorta backed into it when I got a vintage boat to use for fishing with my vintage fishing tackle that I collect and restore.

Lifelong avid fan of motorracing in virtually all forms but a rabid follower of F-1 since Fangio & Moss drove. Got into Grand Prix motorcycle roadracing while a guest of my rich Uncle Sam in Germany in the late 50s. Sundays here at the Bluff I turn on the TV in the shop early to catch the F-1 race and spent pretty much the entire day in an orgy of watching motorracing and tinkering with whatever other hobby I'm pursuing at the time. Got totally disgusted with the commercialized aspect of NASCAR (which I've been following since the drivers were bootleggers getting together on Sunday to race their 'haulers') several years ago because it had came to resemble wrestling more than racing.

History, US & World, but particularly the study of our Constitution & Bill of Rights and the Founding Fathers and their dliberations and debates that preceded the formulation of our nation and the documents seminal to it. As a student of the Founders and concepts of our nation I am NOT a fan of where we're now headed. In short the insane are now running the nuthouse.

Insatiable reader since I learned how. Will read virtually anything but prefer history occasionally off-set by a Sci-Fi binge to clear the mind of negative energy induced by seeing my country going to Hell in a handbasket.

I could go on forever since I have been plagued by insatiable curiosity concerning the world around me since a small child. I often wonder if I could have amounted to something had I channelled all of that curiosity into a single channel rather than scatter-shooting. Cheers, Tom @ Buzzard Bluff

Re: Your Hobbies??

April 7 2008, 5:18 AM

Hobbies? Someone say hobbies? I got hobbies....

Actually, I share hobbies with a bunch of people on this board. I love all things mechanical, and for years tinkered with small engine repair. Have a habit of taking used/worn out outdoor yard equipment from people, and making it serviceable again. Snowblowers, tillers, mowers, it's all fun. That eventually lead to RC aircraft (really an excuse to run very pretty little engines, I know the smell of methanol/nitromethane/castor oil in the morning!), which is probably my primary current addiction.

Airguns are a newer one for me, mostly shooting paper and pests. I also enjoy woodworking (mostly rustic furniture), blacksmithing (wrought iron and knife making as well as utility iron work), gardening (veggies), and keeping up my little acre on the coast.

I tend to be a jack of all trades type, I'm seldom top seed at anything I do, but I do pretty well at most of it. I used to compete in cross country mountain bike racing, but that was 10 years and 50 pounds ago.

J

Here are mine..

April 7 2008, 7:17 AM

So little time, so many things to do..

Hobby #1:
Autocross (Solo II) racing with SCCA, Porsche Club of America (PCA), BMW Car Club of America (BMWCCA) and about 5 other Motorsports regional clubs in the NY/NJ/CT area. Occasional weekend track racing (road racing) and HPDE's.
I am an Instructor as well. (Russ: we have to talk more)

#2 - Hunting
#3 - Salt water fishing - mostly flounder/fluke, bluefish, stripped bass, and a little Tuna and shark fishing now and then.
#4 - Modifying and working on my dedicated race car
#5 - Airguns (this is quickly becoming #2)
#6 - Firearms

Some of my other smaller hobbies like computers, networking, etc. are more related to work so they don't count.
Used to collect stamps and coins for a very short period of time but haven't done it in a while. Don't keep up as much with my hobbies as I would like since I have my son to take care of and other family responsibilities.

Sport fishing and race cars

April 14 2008, 9:09 PM

Harry, I envy you, for being able to shoot your 350 out of your back yard! Hard for me to shoot my 460. with out a little bit of travel. On the other had I can ride my bike 1.5 miles on a scenic bike trail and catch blue fish, flounder, sea trout etc. The marina has charters at that location, making daily trips out for Dolphin, sharks, White Marlin etc. Very reasonable price. Plus I have many friends with boats. I snagged a citation white Marlin some years back out of that Marina, quite an adventure. I complain some about a lack of space to shoot at my will, but all in all it is a great life here. (Tim seems to have the best spot on earth for hunting and shooting). Plus I have one of the greatest tuners and friend ever, only 15 minutes away. (Marcelo Zapatero). He loves to have friends over on a Friday night and tune a gun, drink some gin and smoke cigars. One of the guys is LEE, I have not me him personally, (we always seem to miss each other. But he is also a avid race car driver. Come on down this summer and , bring your 350. and I will introduce you to MZ, His gun collection and knowledge is worth the trip alone.

Good Shooting

It Came Back Up!

April 14 2008, 9:36 PM

I forgot,, I love to garden, food& flowers. I also love building wooden boats! With modern day materials (marine ply, epoxy, ext) combined with modern composit construction tec. Ie. stich&glue,, wood boats can match the modern fiberglass ones,& in most cases far exceed them in many respects. Two strokes may be nearly gone, But, Wood boats will be around for a LONG time!
