Box stock less than 50 shots thru it at time of test.
Yesterday I had the chance to do a little testing with the
Diana Magnum 5G Pistol,my first interest was how it fired (shot cycle)and speed in FPS.I used 3 different type of pellets for this test.
The cocking effort is very easy and seemed to be very smooth for a untuned box gun.Although you have to be careful not to grab it by the fiber optic front sight and break the red fiber when cocking. The trigger(untouched by me) was very light with a few unexpected shots while aiming in.I would guess it breaks at the 1 to 1 1/2 lb. range.Travel is very short and ungritty with a nice clean second stage you can feel but you must pay attention.
Very little recoil! I was expecting the worst. It seems as though the shot cycle is very short with little lock time.
The open fiber optic sights are a little large as most are but set up with 6 O'Clock POI it was grouping in 1/4-3/8's range off a rest(With No flyers). It probably would shoot better but that is the best I can do given my ability to shoot a Pistol. For as large as it looks and really is,,it is very light to the hand and balanced well. You could hold this pistol in front of you for hours with very little fatigue which is exactly what I did.(2 1/2 hours)I am not a big man(5ft9@155lbs) and have average hands and it fits my hands very well.
My first 20 shot string was was with Crosman 7.9 gr Premimum grade wadcutters(walmart)
Shots went from 643low to 668 high averaged 661 FPS
Next 20 shots was RWS 8.2 gr.Professional Line Wadcutters
Low was 631 and high was 658 Avg.came in @ 647 FPS
Last 20 shots I used JSB Predators 8.2 gr.
low was 635 high was 661 Avg.ended up 651FPS.It didn't seem to matter which pellets I used the groups stayed the same.So in short it is not pellet senseitive!
All in all I am very pleased with this pistol and would recommened it to anyone interested in a powerful Air Pistol!

PS: I was using the FWB 300S to shoot a e-match at another forum, and the Diana for the same match click here to see my targets scroll down to BBGun Bob

Great info and pics

Bob, I did not realize the gun was as large as it is, the pic comparing it to the rifle, pointed that out. What a lot of velocity for a spring pistol. I know that PA advertises it at 550 fps, although I have seen other places post it at 700. Sounds like a magnificent piece of fine German craftsmanship. I would really like to see a pic of you actually hold the gun and shooting.

Good Job! and thanks

ps Don't you live in Virginia? (you may get what I am alluding to)

Man that one is hotter than a lit sparkler! -

April 11 2008, 7:28 AM

Never read of one that potent. The two I had shot RWS Hobbies
in the 575-580ish fps MV range and CPLs around 535-540ish fps
MV range. A few I've read reported slightly more than that and
most slightly less to considerably less (probably breech leak
and/or piston seal issues, maybe slightly weaker spring, etc.).

I'm at around 1000' above sea level so no thin air here.

Is the pistol doing any noticable smoking? Any burnt smell?
Cracking loud report?

wow Bob!

You must have the most power pistol out the box! I have never heard of any factory pistol shooting mid-high 600's!

Great review Bob thanks. Do you plan on putting a scope on it?

Actually Bob your P5/G5 Magnum is.....

April 11 2008, 7:41 AM

shooting faster/stronger than Diana 24s and Beeman R7s (HW30s) and
most QB57s.

Hope the LP8 pistol I buy later this year has that much 'juice' too!

I did notice something

April 11 2008, 12:01 PM

Bob's gun is not marked the same as mine. His is missing the pentagon with the f in it symbol. On my two guns its marked in paint in front of the rear sight. So his may be a more powerful version. Both my .22 and .177 carry that symbol so they will not go past 5.7 ft/lbs and can be sold in Germany.... unlike Bob's. In the Diana catalogue the listed velocities are 430/580 for .22/.177 but there is a mention of high power and in brackets Vo=640fps. As I live in Canada my P5's do not have safeties either and I noticed Bob's does so there are different versions out there. My .177 still does over 500fps as Diana noticed that our laws don't specify how heavy of a pellet is used in testing. For the .177 P5 and M24 Diana uses a +9 gr. pellet to get the under 500 fps rating.

Benny I'd say chrony mistake/misreading/malfunction...

April 11 2008, 4:34 PM

or detonation (bad dieselling). I've did a lot of reading up on the
two most powerful factory spring pistols - Diana P5 Magnum and HW45 -
and at best in .22 power will be slightly over 6 FPE.

I've owned 2 Diana P5Ms in .177 and 4 HW45s in .177, .20 and .22.

I hope it's just a bad chrony reading

April 11 2008, 5:14 PM

I'm at 3200 feet which isn't that high and my two P5's are just over 5fpe. My three Hw45s range from 5.2 - 6.2 fpe. His readings are over 7 fpe which is pretty high. I hope that's not all dieseling or he might need a new seal soon.

Chrony fine

April 11 2008, 7:20 PM

Bob, I do not think anything is wrong with the chrony. Everyone blames the Chrony when numbers are low or high. I had extremly high numbers with my 34 and 460. returned the chrony and the numbers were the same with the new one. Maybe the gun shoots those numbers. BreakThe it in and do not worry about it. The gun shoots great!!!!!!!!!!!!

I shot it all day again today

April 11 2008, 8:11 PM

73degrees today with the same pellets all day long Crosman 7.9 gr Premimum grade wadcutters(walmart)shot about 175-200.
I started shortly after noon today and shot continiously at everything I could think of.Paper targets ,tin cans, ice cubes, plastic army men,a couple eggs,ETC. I waited until 6:00 pm to bring out the Chrony, checked the battery with a multi meter it showed 9.3V .I inspected 20 pellets to make sure they looked OK,set up my cheater rest.Put up a new target at 32 feet and shot another 20 shot string with the chrony on.Taking my time to aim and shoot as best as I could. The string seemed to slow down a little from yesterday. The high only went to 665FPS and it spit one out at a low of 598.The average took a drop to 653.So it is slowing down a little I think the spring is finally setting itself and things are smoothing quite nicely. It never did diesel not one shot yesterday either.I did notice it shoots two seprate groups 1 being right in the bullseye the other being 3/8 low and to the right.I looked as if some actually punched two holes the size of a dime in the paper after my 20 shot string.I am not going to worry about the two distinct groups now,Nor am I going to open it up yet.I think it will get its self together in time.
let it get a little lead in the barrel and let the metal parts get to know each other. For some reason I do not want to tune it yet, just let it do its own thing. If by the end of summer I think a tune will improve it I'll seek one of the best Diana/springer tuners around and beg him to have a go at it..
There is a definite difference between what I can do and pro like ZVP or Rich in Mich.
For now the way it is is fine with me.

Have a good weekend
Enjoy yourself and
your family!!
