Well guy's friday I finally unpacked the Disco.I bought it 4-5-08.while at that show in Findaly,OH. but had it hid from ma-ma!(PLEASE!,,,Don't laugh its not funny!!) She finally had some social event to go to which gave me time to unpack it,hide the box, scope it and pump it up.From 0 to 2000 psi it took 126 pumps from the pump supplied with the gun.I shot it 36 times before it went down to the otherside of the green on the Disco pressure gage which I believe is 1000 psi Then I filled it up to the 2000psi mark again that took 36 pumps!! One shot a pump not bad.The average with Tim's old Chrony after 20 shots was 858.High was 887 and low was 823.It seems to make the most power in the middle of the green on the gage between high and low pressure.(around1500psi)
I was using 14.2gr. Gamo Match wadcutters and it was hitting VERY HARD.Its not as loud as some say, about 1/3 more than a CR 1077 or a 2250.At least it did not bother the neighbors and it was pretty quiet in the neighborhood today. There's usually a bunch of little guys running around screaming and hollaring and playing tag or something but they were gone for some reason.I mounted a Barska Varmint 6-24X42 scope on it.It took about 6 shots to get it in a 1/2 " circle and 4 more to put it in 1/4" bull @ 10 meters or 32 feet.
I have to tell you guys it is accruate as hell.It will pop-um into a clover leaf group just about every time bench rested.(If I don't wiggle and take my time)
I did not alter it before I shot it.I just cleaned out the bore with a .22 swab with Goo-Gone on it until a patch came out clean, then very lightly ran a patch with a little silicone grease thru it.
The trigger is not bad but could use a little tweeking.Total pull is pretty short for a box stock rifle and break is crisp and clean on second stage.I think a lighter spring and a stone/polish to the trigger group will make it a very nice target shooter.
I have to admit it sure is nice to just open the breech throw in a pellet and shoot again. And no recoil! ! Wow is that ever nice for a change.I could be headed to the darkside real soon.LOL
Here's a couple of pics of it from my crappy camara.
I will also post a target I shot today for the airgunhome.com match they have every week. The rules for each target are posted there also for this weeks target #32..Also the pictures there can be enlarged so I'll include that link also.

Have a good week ahead!!
Shoot often and safe!!

thanks Bob!

I 'm glad you like the Discovery and thanks for sharing some info. Seems you have a strong one too. Capello's review had it shooting 14.x pellets about 30fps slower.
How is the wood on it? How would you compare the noise/report to a Magnum Springer?

The big Cocker

April 21 2008, 6:43 PM

Harry, why are you concerned about noise. You told me, that my shroud on my 850. was of no concern because your neighbors did not mind the sound of your gun. Harry, I have a hard time believing that you would entertain a gun as mild as the Discovery. On the contrary, I would think you would be entertaining a 50lb cocker at 25.cal. I have to agree with Tim, go get some sleep. The Disco is Grilled Salmon with salad a Green tea (unsweetened) not a double whopper with bacon, double fries downed with a large shake.LOL! Your killing me!

Dave@vabch

Bob, great post please keep up the good work. The discovery sounds like a grand gun!!

No bad pump

April 21 2008, 8:32 PM

Just smaller volume to get to over 3000 psi. Great advice on this one. ("Disco" only requires 2000 psi). Some of my friends here unintentionatly vindicate me, Some get mad at me. I love the healthy discusions we have, makes it the great forum it is. Tim.

Dave

I 'm entertaining the idea of a Discovery or any PCP, because I found a Scuba shop 15min. from where I live. I was driving around with my son a couple of weeks ago on a nice Sat. (or Sun?) and was in some back country roads letting my Integra stretch her legs after a long winter of storage, when all of a sudden I drove by this little old house in the country, that said "SCUBA shop"! I turned around and pulled in to make sure it was operational. They had just closed minutes before I got there. The 2nd closest shop that I know of is almost 1hr away from me. This pumping thing is not for me.. it's a Scuba tank or nothing.

I think the Discovery has potential (with mods) and I like the fact that it is not louder than a Magnum springer. If it were any louder I 'd be concerned. I don't want the neighbors to think I 'm shooting a rimfire .22 and call the cops.

My question to you Dave is, why are you looking at this 20+fpe gun when you have dramatically de-tuned most of your guns? I understand you are de-tuning springers to make them more accurate, and this is a PCP, but you have stopped hunting. You don't need a 20+fpe gun to shoot accurately. You have low-powered springers for that. I guess a new gun is a new gun to add to your collection..
As far as the 850 .22 goes, I never regreted getting it, nor do I compare it to the Discovery. Test results by the lucky few that were evaluating the Disco were already available and posted on forums before I ordered the 850. I wanted a ~12fpe gun for smaller animals and birds and particularly one my wife could handle and enjoy shooting. She does not like springers as much and this way I can get her involved in airguns so she won't bi*ch everytime UPS comes, and so far it has been working out
My next .25cal springer will not have a 50lb cocking effort but will most likely be a 350 .25 that will cock with ease just like my tuned 350 .22 will when I get it back.

Detuned guns

April 22 2008, 12:42 PM

Harry, I am not really in the market for a new gun now. As I mentioned earlier, I have my hands full with the guns I have and the new tunes coming up. (seems like I have spent a fortune). Yes, I am a light/medium springer guy, became a real believer the night I left MZ's house. My detuned 34 was a real strong message and was just more reinforcement for a precision detune. You are right, I really do not need the Disco, especially since the only hunting I do is Starling (which I detest)and now squirrels especially when I saw one attacking the nest of a native song bird. I actually do love my 850. and it is a great gun to shoot and so very accurate. My favorite gun to shoot now is the HW 30 with open sights that MZ procured for me for my young son. I kill starling all day long with that one. My C1 will be the gun I will use for hunting. I just ordered a muzzle break for it and a sling. My 460 will be de-tuned next week and am looking forward to turning that gun into a real smooth 25 yard gun. I do not have much time to practice at yardage greater than that, especially where I live. I am also going to place my beeman peep sight on the 460.and see how that goes. Should be alright as long as I wear my glasses. Also my R7 will be out of the shop soon. I think the Disco is a great innovation and may get one down the road. But you are right, I am rally lazy and do not want to do any pumping. It would make an interesting gun for my son when he is a little older. MZ picked up a new Talon not long ago and is making a customize stock. (hard to believe from a springer guy like him). I hope is does not influence me! LOL Well anyway if you ever want to shoot the 460 or the 34 just to see how they shoot just let me know.

Good shooting!

Disco advantage

April 22 2008, 1:41 PM

First of all, let me say the 850 is a nice rifle and when retrofitted to run on HPA, it is close in performance to the Discovery. Right now, in head to head velocity, the Disco comes out on top by 100 - 150 fps, but the 850 wins with the repeater format.

Why get the Disco if you don't ned 20+ fpe? Long distance shooting/grouping. I'm not saying I'm that good a shot that I get bored at 10 or even 25 yards, but there is something to be said about taking an airgun out for a walk at 50, 75 or even 100 yards. Now for mid-powered guns, that means a lot of holdover. For a springer, that means doing everything to perfection. But with my disco zeroed at 50 yards, holdover at 75 is only a few inches and 100 yards could be done by cranking up the elevation on my Sportsman Scope. I've posed these before but here is a pic of a 50 yard group before I got the trigger right where I wanted it. Haven't shot one since then but I will soon. The gun certainly is capable. Heck, a customized Ruger 10/22 would be able to do this, but I don't want to have to deal with the backstop requirements.

"but I'll be needin' that gun, fer squirrels and such."

the discovery in the 2nd production stage

April 22 2008, 4:53 PM

the advantage of the Discovery is clear in yards, recoil, scope protection, price, mount, fpe, holdover, etc.

but you cannot compare a chinese clone PCP with a springer the PCP is in a world of its class and the Discovery for the $$ is way ahead of any springer

let,s wait for the 2dn generation of the Discovery it will outshine the 1st production and the price will be below for the price of any springer at that fps

warren

and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"

nice!

April 22 2008, 7:36 PM

group @ 50yds Bob!! What did you get the trigger down to? Was it hard to do?

Dave:
I hear you buddy. You definitely have enough guns to keep busy.. Why didn't you say you were still taking care of Starlings? I was afraid to say anything thinking you 've gone soft on us since your last post about a "poor squirrel" you got I got about 10-11 Starlings in the last couple of weeks. My latest victims were 2 sparrows today and last Thur. along with another Starling. What can I say, I was bored The Grackles have almost disappeared after I shot a couple of their buddies 2-3 wks ago. Nowadays since I can't legally shoot the squirrels until September, I just watch the groundhogs from my window get full on my lawn and counting the days until my "new and improved" 350 arrives to deal with them. I have learned a lot watching them actually. I know their escape routes and have discovered several new holes they have dug up recently. I couldn't have found them if I weren't watching them patiently. I have also learned which ones they really live in and which ones are decoys or just emergency escape ones. I have also learned their habits like the one from the neighbor's will come over to my property when they are home and the one in my back yard comes out usually later than the neighboring one after 2 or 2:30pm while the neighbor's g-hog is out usually between 12:30-1:30.

Anyway, it's all good. I 'm still actually looking for a used R9 or Goldfinger but not as diligently as before.
