I've used it

April 27 2008, 6:26 PM

I have tried it for a total reblue and was very disappointed. Stripped the whole gun down and polished with 600 grit. Could not get it to stop rusting over no matter what I tried. Even called their tech folks and talked to them 3 or 4 times. They even sent me new stuff to try. I ended up trying it about a dozen times (because I'm stubborned) and could not get it to stop rusting over. The only reason I tried so long is it looked so good right after I put the developer on. Then 3 or 4 days later, it would start to rust over. Maybe if I neutralized it with a hot water bath first??

I've used it since for just touch up and it's fine. Just don't strip the original finish and you'll be OK. For a nice cold blue refinish, hard to beat Oxpho Blue. Apply it to warm/hot metal and let it cure for a few days before handling. Works the best of all cold blues I've tried.

"but I'll be needin' that gun, fer squirrels and such."

Bill, the reviews of Oxpho were much more positive than Blue wonder. I notice that Cabellas carries it as well. Very reasonable price. Also noticed this which I will order" for gun cabinet.

Get the paste

April 27 2008, 6:47 PM

Oxpho is sold in liquid and paste - get the paste. It goes on better and is easier to work with.

blackening/blueing

April 28 2008, 1:44 AM

Nothing really will replace hot caustic blueing, but preperation and polishing of the metal is paramount, degreasing is also all important.

If you can live with a semblence of parkerization this products is
real simple to use and gives very good results as long as one follows
their directions. Clean the metal degrease well and immerse the parts
for recommended period of time follow their directions and you will have a blackened rifle.

I have used it for a number of guns and parts.

Slow rust blue is superior to hot salts

April 28 2008, 5:40 PM

Just takes too much time for most folks. Easy to do and minimal equipment, especially in summer when it's humid.
