The 460 has a screw (bolt) that drags a little sheet metal windage adjustment right and left in the rear sight. Is it typical for that little piece to have a fair amount of forward-backward play ? Or is it tight in the rear sight
I was just trying to find out if all of them were junk before I started bothering everybody about it. I havn't had blind faith in RWS since about 2001. I just figured this was another example of their waning quality control. You say it's the same rear sight as a 350, well then your in luck James. I have a brand new one in one of the air gun part drawers. It came off of the air gun as soon as we got it (350). I will have it in the mail as soon as possible. I went out and got the 350 sight. It was pulled off of the 350 brand new. Guess what ! It has forward / backward play in it. But maybe less than yours. Save all the hardware and height adjustment wheel off of the 460 sight, mounting screws/bolts included. PS- send me your snail mail address again and good luck with her.
I have a few lying around that are new; they were taken off new guns where barrel shrouds were installed making the open sights unnecessary. I checked them for play based on the side to side movement as would normally occur when adjusting the windage. If I actually grasp the blade between my thumb and forefinger, I can lift it up about .015" (per my digital calipers)...then when I have it lifted up I can move it back "n" forth about .02-.025". BTW, when I lift the blade, it DOES take some effort (not a lot of effort but within reason for the size of the part). When I tip the complete unit upside down, there is no movement and when I shake it there is no movement that is perceivable. I cut the corner off of a page of printer paper so as to make a little triangle and slid it under the blade and inverted the unit and gave it a stout shake and the paper didn't fall (for what that is worth).
Question for you:
If you hold the unit so that you are pressing down lightly on the blade and you then turn the adjustment knob GENTLY, is there any "extra" rotational play in the knob (as you might see in the steering wheel of an old car) before you feel the blade move in either direction?
James in Co. has the 460 with a loose rear sight. I have a brand new one I will send him. He might need some of your data on what is good and what isn't. I don't even use them. Thanks again Curtis.
James, I got your address and I will go to the post office tomorrow and mail it to you. I don't trust it in and envelope or I would have sent it from the house yesterday.
I sent the new rear sight the afternoon the day before yesterday James. Look for it in the mail and happy shooting. Sorry I didn't tell you sooner but it's been A..holes and elbows around here.
No problem. I have been preoccupied with a new Marlin 39A (.22), 336C (30-30) and a Weatherby Orion O/U (12). Big grin! BTW those who claimed the RWS 350 kicks as much as a 30-30 hasn't shot a 30-30 recently enough to remember. Have a good one John.
Yea, We are lever action fans ourselves. We have 2 pre 1964 39As,1 newer 39A ,a 4570 , a Rem. 44 mag ,and a 30-30 Winchester all lever actions. Plus a host of other goodies. But no Wetherbys.
