:

MiniSniping is the field sport of using ultra-precision .177 caliber airguns outdoors in a scaled-down version of metallic silhouette of falling plate shooting with centerfires. If that makes it sound like a sissy sport, let me point out a few aspects of it that might give a better insight.

The targets we shot are generally 9mm empty cartridge cases steadied by a base of modeling clay, or, as it's called here, plasticene. You will recall the stuff as the gummy crud your mother was always picking out of your hair when you got bored with molding turkeys and pilgrims in fourth grade, and discovered that a pellet of it worked very nicely in cool weather in both your slingshot and peashooter. In any case, 9mm cases are unbelievably small, precise targets at 35 yards, but to find just how relatively small they were I had to actually get a mathematician to do the calculations.

Lorian Coughlan of South Africa, who would have surely come up with the Theory of Relativity had she not been edge out by sheer chronology, advises me and thee that the visual relationship between a target 3/4 inch in height would be the same as the 29 inch average between a sniper's scalp and belt buckle at 1336.6 yards! So, if you got 35 yards in your backyard you can shoot at the equivalent of an enemy sniper at better than a relative 1,000 yards plus. I don't know about you, but that does pure wonders for my backyard.

Actually, Holdover geometry tells a poor story here,

September 15 2008, 3:30 PM

the difference is even greater.

The simple rule of three geometry (proportionality) does not take into consideration the extremely poor BC of pellets which results in an out-of-proportion wind drift.

If you shoot the Mini-sniping game with an 18 ft-lb, 0.177" PCP FT rifle, the game is "simple", almost boring, except in hardy/windy days.

BUT . . . shoot at the same targets with a 6 ft-lb Match gun with WC pellets and the game becomes almost impossible to "Ace". Those were the original conditions under which the game was developed, IIRC.

Here in México, the 9 mm's Parabellum cartridge is reserved for Army duty, so just getting CAUGHT with ONE spent case means jailtime. We shoot at steel cutouts that resemble the thing in general, or at paper images, like the ones you can download from the site you visited.

From real-world experience, I can tell you that the mini-sniping game, with the low powered airguns for which the game was designed "feels" like sniping at 1,500 meters with a modern 7.62X51 NATO rifle with the 170 grs. sniper rounds, not the issue 144 FAL grainers; that is about 1,650 yards, give or take a few due to conversion.

Go at it, by all means, but do bear in mind that the challenge is the wind. Shooting indoors is not the same and using fast guns is also a different game.

Gracias , senoir Medina

Im no mathmatican Hector,So I'll take your word for it. But it seems like a fun game .and I thought Some guys on here might like the Idea.

I agree it should be done outside also. But for more advanced airguns wouldnt it be just a question of a challengeing distance?

wind drift

September 15 2008, 8:33 PM

the .177 pellet cal. shoots a flat trajectory compared to the .22 but indoors and outdoors are 2 completely different things, meaning .177 at 900 fps

try wind flags, place small flags spaced at 10 yards from 0 to 50 yards, watch them flap and then shoot a .177 pellet, bet you it will Dance with a low wind and loose the target by 1/8" at 20 yards, try 50 yards with wind and your margin of error is greater

indoors is a controlled environment, outdoors is a Wild world at 50 yards with some wind and will probably make them waltz to 1/2' or more difference from POI

warren

PS: just my experience, maybe your wind is more gentle, LOL

and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"

In the end

September 16 2008, 12:18 PM

we shoot to challenge ourselves.

Whatever challenges you to better yourself is a good game.

When you succeed at something, then make it harder! LOL!!!!

¿no?

Keep well!
