I know that a spring under compression for extended periods of time does have ill effects on it's performance, but just how long is too long? I often walk my property in search of prey with my M34 cocked for sometimes 5 or more minutes. Should I be fireing the pellet if I don't get a shot soon after being cocked and loaded? I do have the JM spring/guide kit installed. Is the JM spring less or more resistant to premature spring wear? Just how long do you guys go without taking a shot before you fire the pellet away?
5 minutes, 5 hours, 5 days, won't hurt it. Tests have proven that even extended periods over many weeks have little or no detrimental effect on a spring.
I saw the report Dave just mentioned. Keeping the gun cocked for long periods has little of no effect. Especially with the new springs and the alloys made into them. I will look up the report on my archives tomorrow.
but with a well designed spring it will not be an issue. I suspect that the engineers at Diana are well versed at spring design by now......I've left mine cocked for longer than I care to admit...
I don't know what the other test revealed, but this one reckoned about a 25% power drop over a long period. In fact, there was a thread on one of the forums not long ago about "detuning" a gun by leaving it cocked for a while prior to shooting.
