Help! My 460 Is Broken

Today as I pulled the underlever down to cock the rifle, it suddenly hung in the cocked position. I could not move it further back nor foward and the beartrap lever did not work (didn't catch). The gun was cocked because the safety engaged. Only after pushing in the safety and pulling the trigger which allowed the lever to move foward a bit till it was caught by the beartrap, then holding the beartrap lever down was I able to manhandle the cocking lever forward under mainspring pressure. Thinking that maybe this was a fluke, I tried 3 additional times - same thing. Called Umarex but they said that they couldn't figure out what happened. Any ideas? Thanks!

It's Working Again

October 6 2008, 4:55 PM

Well, I took my gun apart to see if there is something so obvious that I, without any knowledge of airguns, could see. As I was lifting the action out of the stock, something fell to the dirty floor of my shop from around the trigger area. Of course I couldn't tell what fell and looking at the action I couldn't see that anything looked out of place or damaged. I did see that somehow sometime someone has put tar or gel on the mainspring - does that mean a tune? Anyway, I put the gun back together and it cocked and shot properly about a dozen times. Could something have gotten in the trigger and caused the problem? Any ideas? Thanks!

i think

that the T05 trigger is the culpret. my 52 has done the same thing but it is improving with use.

black tar sounds like your gun has been tuned. did you buy it used?

i don't know for sure but i think that sometimes the two little plates that are in the trigger that are sandwiched together somehow get slightly missaligned and cause the piston rod to bind as it tries to pass through the two holes that are in those plates. it then locks against the bear trap. i hold the lever back and release the anti bear trap release and let the lever go back slowly. if it is under spring tension while doing that it is not cocked. i then pull the trigger to make sure it re-sets. if i kind of repeatedly work my side lever against the resistance it will suddenly slide through with a little clunk. it is getting better with more shots.

Terry, I think Larry has it right.

The two plates that catch the piston rod probably have a rough spot or are not lubed well. Theres a chance that this will wear in after awhile but tearing down the trigger, polishing the plates to a mirror finish and then lubing them with a lite grease would be a major improvement. I,m more worried about what fell out of your rifle when you removed the stock!

To a problem thats been fairly widely posted about on the net. Word on the street is that Umarex is not aware of the problem -maybe b/c its hard to diagnose....Thanks for the input, my 48 has experienced this as well.
