Today I was ready to buy a Diana refurb

On a whim, I called Umarex to check if there were any refurbed carbines in stock. I have a little extra cash and was ready to fork over. The fella checked, said he had a 34C the other day but it is sold. Darn. He said they don't have any of the new Compact models in for refurb yet but to keep checking.
I already have a rip-snortin, nitro-burnin, chopped R9, but I just can't get a shorty Diana off my mind.
Oh well, I guess I get to keep my cash for now. Probably by the time Umarex has refurb Compacts, the money will be gone.

How much cheaper is a refurb?

October 10 2008, 5:57 PM

They do send them back for a reason. Is the price break that much?

the price is good

sometimes the price is less than half the retail. you have to ask why the gun was returned. i usually deal with ryan at umarex. sometimes the stocks may have a blemish or the bluing is screwed up. they will usually tell you what it was.

Much cheaper

Ryan at Umarex said the 34C went for $130 shipped for just the gun, or $150 with scope and mount.

There is no warranty on the Refurbs.

I'm dealing with that myself, as my .22caliber Model 36 {R}has started vertical stringing (likely an internal problem that'll end up in a teardown & rebuild).Oh well I like playing with airguns anyway!

Please consider the worth of warranty repairs and possible prior serious damage as opposed to the maybe $125 or so price difference...

 Good luck!

No warranty?

October 11 2008, 8:09 AM

I thought they had 30 days. I figure 90% of stock guns require a JM spring or kit and/or seal before they really shoot nice anyway, so I pretty much count on voiding the warranty to install that. However, if you are getting stringing problems due to barrel lock-up issues and/or out of round or tapered tube issues, that's pretty lame that Umarex ever resold that gun.
I had demo 48 several years ago that was a good gun and looked new by all accounts.

Still and all, that's not such a big break

Sometimes you can find them used and in good shape for close to that, and often with some minor tunes thrown in. I don't like to scratch and dent my guns, but if I do it, well, I did it. Don't often like to pay for blems that were someone else's fault, but, then, that's me. One other consideration is the scarlet letter should you go to resell. Really should list them as refurb's which may put some buyers off. I just wouldn't be desperate to buy from Umarex. May pay to follow the classifieds, especially the Yellow where you have the BOI to back it up. Most guys there are quite honest about condition, as well as being knowledgeable owners. Just my 2 cents, plain.

Re: No warranty?

 Dan,

No warranty is what UMAREX e-mailed me.

It's like buying a pretty Chinese rifle that'll be real nice once I take apart... I bought cheap and screwed my own self in the process. Noone to blame but myself.

Far  as the "Fix" goes, I'm sure a JM kit will do it and probablly greatly improve an already nice rifle. In the beginning power and accuracy were excellent. Something failed at about shot 600. I doubt I'll ever buy another similarily discounted gun. I'm getting old and too lazy to work on my guns, I just want to shoot.

Remember, that the large "R" stamped several places on the metal and wood really detracts from the appearance and will surely destroy any resale value but if you purchased the gun as just a "shooter" as I did won't mind them much. The reduced cost gets quickily offset by those stamps! I'm sure it is a legal protection that the company must take and it WILL prevent fradulant sfuture sales.
