Any way to de-tune a 34?

Maybe de-tune isn't the right word. I have a .177 cal 34 that shoots  CPL's about 950-975 fps. Trouble is, it's so harsh shooting that I don't like shooting it much. I'd like to have it shooting smoother in the 800-850 fps range. Is there another spring or something else that could be done to drop the velocity and smooth the firing cycle a bit?

he makes tune kits that contain spring, guide and lubes. tell him what you want to do. his kits cost around $70-$75. they usually result in a smoother firing cycle with reduced power being the byproduct.

if you are going to tackle this yourself you will need to buy or build a srping
compressor. i read somewhere that the 34 has a significant spring pre-load and is dangerous to disassemble without one. shot the spring and trigger group accross a garage and blew the trigger group apart.

The Maccari 34 kit will give you alot less recoil and probably take you right down to the power level your looking for. Also if you ever decide you,d like the power moved back up you can always install shims.Hes also right about the preload on the spring. Its not like the 350 mag. but it will travel across the room and put a hurtin on whatever gets in the way.

Detuned 34

I had a MZ detuning from MZ. The gun was transformed into one smooth operator. Shoots like a R7 but more powerful. Accuracy is now near perfection.

Want to trade springs?

October 19 2008, 10:21 AM

I have a 34 in .177 I just cronied shooting CPH at 810-825fps pretty darn consistently. I got this gun used in like new condition and I beleive it is the OEM spring. I was thinking of getting a new OEM spring for it as I have a model 36 in .177 that shoots 925fps just fine and I am considering selling the 34. The 34 shoots smooth at 820fps and is noticebly easier cocking than the 36. I think I could get more velocity out of the 34 wihtout sacrifice if I install a new OEM spring. If you would like to swap springs with me, I'm game. If it don't work to your satisfaction, I could send you cash for yours, send it back or what ever. Let me know.

Re: Any way to de-tune a 34?

 Kieth,

One very simple method would be to order the Low Velocity Factory mainspring that's intended for Countrys with Velocity/Ft Lbs or Kg limits.

UMAREX carries the Mainspring for around $19.00 (the last time I checked). We are all familliar with the quality of the Factory product and can guess that a "Soft" Factory spring will last forever!

I had a similar idea about de-tuning my .177 Model 34 but changed my mind after a long range shooting session where the incrediable long range accuracy of the rifle became evident. The 34 isa really neat platform to experiment on , and a Low Velocity rifle would likely be a heck of a lot of fun! Paul Watts made a Psuedo L/V "Match" Model 34 that came out great as he told me.

A full blown , Heavy Stocked, Match Grade, 34 ought to be a real prize. I consider the short, light Stock to be  about the most highly detrimental factor  in shoopting the 34 accurately! The Factory stock has no buttplate and gets prone to sliding on the sholder. The shallow foreend "carries" well afield but a denser wood that is squared at the bottom of the forearm would make things a lot more stable.

Good luck with your project and please show us the results!

You need a Maccari spring or kit

October 23 2008, 7:36 AM

My 36 (same as 34) shoots CP's & CPL's at 900-925fps and is very "smooth" (not a harsh shot cycle) and extremely accurate.
But the gun like some of the others' here, has an advanced tune with JM spring, metal guide & top hat plus JM lubes. The JM spring should bring the velocity of 7.9gr pellets down to ~900. The gun is most accurate (1 hole shots @ 25yds) with 8.3gr Superdomes. The 36 shoots them at 860-875fps and 8.8gr Beeman FTS around 840-850fps which is what you were looking for.

If you can afford it get it tuned with the JM kit and you won't have to sacrifice a lot of power to get a lot shooting pleasure & accuracy out of it. You won't regret it. I will not shoot another untuned Springer again.

Venom has a 12Ftp kit too. Brings it down to about 235m/sec in 4.5mm. Enough for 50m shooting.
I bought a kit for my 31 Panther.

.177 perform better if the velocity is down in the 800 range. the macarri kit is the way to go. send it off John from PA.

Let John in PA work on it.

Keith if you're not up to the job of doing the work yourself, try John it PA. He did a great job on my Panther Pro and it is much smoother to shoot and cock and has close to the factory muzzle velocity it had when he got it.
