I just commited to buy a used RWS-48 off of a web site called Brads classifieds.
How does it work? Do I send the money and hope the seller is honest and I really will recieve the gun. Is there some way of post dateing a check? I know I will pay but how do you convence the seller of that. How do you guys buy and sell if you don"t know each outher?
I really want this gun to go with my RWS-52, but I don"t want to get burnt.
First, check the BOI rating of the seller and you should be fine. Then send the money the way the seller would like you to, and when the check clears on the seller's end, the seller will send the rifle.
does the seller have pictures? does he provide an E-mail address and phone #? will he only take Pay-Pal?
call him and tell him you will pay US Postal Money Order if it is the first time dealing with him
you send a US PMO and he does not send the item then put a complain from your side at the Post Office, the USPS Postal Inspector's will work for FREE for you for scamming you and the USPO, if in the USA
warren
PS: merry christmas
and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"
Thank you all.
Warren he had pictures a e-mail address a phone number and he suggested I go the P.O. money order route. He said he had bought and sold hundreds of times. I feel more comfortable after talking to him and he suggested the same things as you all.
I recently paid by one and had a bit of trouble connecting with the seller, thinking I might not be receiving what I bought (which I eventually did). At one point, I called the USPS and the lady there informed me that I could go to my local post office where, for $5, I could fill out a form enabling them to investigate whether or not the PO was cashed. In the event it was not, I could then get a replacement PO for about $7. If it had, indeed, been cashed, it then became a civil matter for the courts and was no longer the Postal Service's affair. So, postal money orders, aside from being accepted by pretty much all sellers and a safe way to transfer funds, aren't as bullet (pellet?) proof as we'd like to believe.
I too went to the Post Office to get proof that in fact a MO I sent someone had been cashed. When I asked if they can help me with a problem I 'm having because I did not get the goods & service I paid for with that money order, they said you 'd have to take this person to court and it has nothing to do with the Post Office at that point. This is probably one of the reasons many accept a USPS MO and not Paypal. With Paypal, you can file a complaint against the seller and report him/her. Paypal will intervene or mediate and can even take away the seller's Paypal account or withdraw the $ automatically (take it back) from their account or credit card which scammers or most people don't want. The only thing with Paypal is, you have 30 days max. to report the problem with them. After 30 days they won't do anything for you. A good scammer can talk his way past 30 days.. I personally think this is a very bad policy of Paypal's. It should be 90 days minimum IMO. When you buy goods I can see maybe 30 days (would prefer 60), but if you are buying a service like having your gun tuned, etc. it usually takes more than 30 days, so Paypal is no help there either. Any way you look at it, the buyer can get screwed very easily since payment has to be made first (usually).
BOI (on the Yellow Forum) is extremely important! I will not do business with anyone now that does not have multiple positive feedbacks on the BOI, unless it's someone I know well from this forum, and others that I also know, have had transactions with that person and can "highly" recommend them.
I just bought a used gun without having to pay for it before I received it! The seller only had a couple of BOI feedbacks, all good but I was still a little hesitant because he had only bought stuff and never sold anything. So he suggested he send the gun to me first (>$800 worth!) to check it out, since I have such great BOI on the Yellow (over a page), and if I don't like it to return it, or to send him the $ later after I checked it and shot it for a couple of days. That's what I call a totally and unquestionably great seller. Come to think of it, I have to give this person some good feedback tonight, I almost forgot! heheh
