Shot my 2nd raccoon the other night with the Condor .22. My Lemak .25 Condor does not have a shroud yet and it can wake up the neighborhood with only 1/2 or less the report it's producing now, so I 'm not really using it yet until it gets shrouded. I got another used .25 Condor fully tuned by Talon Tunes (and I mean power tuned & otherwise) but it arrived the day after this night hunt. I 'm afraid to reach for a Springer when I see the size of these night creatures(!) so I instinctively reach for the Condor and heavy pellets.

Distance was only about 22yds with another well placed head shot using a 28.4gr Eun Jin traveling ~950fps. He did a little death dance for a couple of secs like a squirrel does so he got 'red stuff' all over him. It was not as fat/heavy as the first one but it was 3-4" longer (almost 38"!) and 3-lbs lighter at 21 pounds. The Condor in the pic is 45" long.. Two of them came together again.. so it was dejavous all over again. One walked away, but it was the bigger fatter one. I couldn't see its head well and decided to go for the other one when he turned my direction with its head down, just like the first one a couple of weeks ago. It's in my neighbor's freezer because my wife does not allow me to bring dead animals into the house sad.gif I can wait to taste it!
Also now I have to figure out what to do with the 4 skunks (one albino!) that keep coming around.. Best to leave them alone me thinks happy.gif I shot one about a month ago, never again! But that's another story, hehehe

N ice shooting

December 24 2008, 3:39 AM

Harry when you get your shroud, I think you may be up all night. Do you use a "call"? Pretty soon, I think you have to turn to stalking. Maybe some all night hunts. I remember when I got you excited about the 850. I had no idea that Only 1 gun Harry would morph into the Dark Side. Good Shooting Harry. Like I mentioned, This spring I am going to invest into a inflatable boat to take down the watersheds for Nutria. Maybe you can make it down to the Beach and we can do a all nighter. Nutria hunting is open all year and with no Limit. However I am a bit Leary that you will use your powers and take me to the DARK SIDE!

GOOD SHOOTING COON KING!

Dave@vabch

PS many videos of nutia hunting on the internet.Shooting these pest that are destroying our beautiful wetlands is very honorable down here in Tidewater.

Try a Portabote

December 24 2008, 9:29 PM

Much more secure than an inflatable and more stable.

Unless you are experienced with Zodiacs and such, it is safer to stick to boats that handle like other boats.

Being in the water, at night, in tropical climates is no joke.

Please be safe.

Merry Christmas!

are you for REAL

December 24 2008, 6:22 AM

Harry:

that Condor is pushing 56 foot pounds pellets at 950 fps in .22 cal with 28.4 gr. pellets

warren

PS: that Coon did not have at chance 50 yards with that howitzer of yours, less at 22 yards

and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"

Thanks guys

Sure, if I can find a used shrouded (quiet) Big Bore airgun, why not Christo? happy.gif They are very hard to find though. The 6.35mm (.25)'s will satisfy me for now..

Dave:
I 'll take you up on that offer when you get your boat!! hehehe. You will not sell your Springers (I never will either), but you will be taken by the power and quiet report of a tuned Condor that you will try and get one for sure. To answer your question, I 'm actually using technology to go after them. I have installed a wireless infra-red heat-sensor outside and when they come, the receiver alerts me with a nice chime sound. Everyone at the GTA forum started getting them too because of me! happy.gif It beats waiting outside in the freezing cold or stalking them at night which is really impossible, since these critters were built to master the dark and have better senses than I do. They would know you 're out there way before you ever see them or hear them.. unless it's a skunk. I repeatedly manage to sneak up on skunks within 10-15yds, or had them walk straight up to me when I just stood there motionless, but I have learned how not to spook them too much so they don't spray.

Warren:
My Lemak and Talon Tunes .25's have a lot more power than my .22. So 56ft-lbs is not much for me but it's good for .22cal and 28gr projectiles. I would not hesitate taking down a coyote with a head shot at 50yds with this gun, but I will leave that task, if and when it comes, up to the .25's.

This .22 is actually a 70ft-lb gun with the 30gr Eley slugs and 32gr SamYangs. It was "only" 56ft-lbs at the time of the raccoon shot with the 28.4gr, because I had already taken 10-15 shots with it and because I always keep the Power Wheel at the lowest setting (1). I also only fill to 2500psi because it gives me the best consistency using less air and that way I don't have to visit the scuba shop for a long time. I get a lot more shots at the lowest power setting way, over 50-60 good shots actually. When I had it on PW setting 6 in the beginning and 2700+psi fill, I used to get only about 30 power shots but the gun was shooting very strong because it has at least a heavier hammer & spring that I know of. It blew through a 2x4" in my office like butter (had duct seal behind it which stopped it) the first time on PW setting 4 & 2800psi fill, and it scared me so after I played with it a little to see what it can do, I lowered the power setting all the way down, and left it there. I have also not tried anything more than PW setting 6 (goes up to 12) because it was using too much air and its abundant power was not necessary for backyard shooting or I should say for the type of hunting I do which is usually squirrels, crows and groundhogs. At power setting 6 the 21gr Kodiaks were also flying supersonic (>1,100fps) which I did not want for accuracy sake, plus the report got a tiny bit louder with a "little crack", not loud at all. I just didn't like that muffled "crack" sound. When subsonic, it sounds very quiet and with mostly the mechanical sound of the valve being slammed. The Airhog shroud works extremely well. I think this .22 Condor may even be a 75fpe gun with the 32gr Eun Jin/SamYangs but I just want a higher shot count & consistency and it does it well with the wheel turned all the way down. The guy I bought it from in Hawaii was also a part-time gunsmith and he was tinkering with it. He had 3-4 Condors taken apart and was interchanging parts plus trying aftermarket ones, to try and make a stronger one. He was actually trying to build a big bore .308 or 9mm Condor. He was hunting 80+lb pigs with this .22. So god only knows what 's really in it or what he did to it but I like it just the way it is happy.gif

We got about 17" of snow here over the weekend so I can't do much hunting like I had planned. I would really like to hit the woods with the shrouded Talon Tunes .25 and a couple of Predator calls, but I 'm not walking through snow up to my knee especially through unfamiliar grounds. I may go do some scouting this weekend though looking for tracks in the snow and see how bad it is moving around.

You should make a hat

December 26 2008, 11:01 AM

Hi Harry,

I always wanted to make me a nice coonskin hat. You can tan one out yourself, and make a hat for yourself. At least it would be fun to wear it when you are huntin. My wife hates it when I wear my fur skin cap, so I wear it out when I'm by myself but it never fails to bring some smiles especially with the older guys, and little boys.

Not sure where you live, but those look to have nice fur on them. It seems they never get a nice fur in Dallas, as it's not cold enough for them but up if your up north it sure will.

I'm still looking for a nice tanned one to make my hat but wow, I've been surprised to see what coon skins bring now.

Good shooting.

Shoot Safe,

Bryan
