I know we been over this a hundred times but,the 60's have trashed my memory, and I guess the search function is on the fritz again, anyway can I use cros premier ultra mag or kodiaks in my D350m .177? I would like to try the benji hollow points also. they seem to be a rebranded cr hollow point ultra mag, either way is 10.6 gr too heavy for the 350? i have dumped about 2 tins of rws super mag (9.6gr) thru the D34 in the last year or so with no problems so far. they have literaly knocked squirrels of the branch before at 30 yds. sorry to be tilling old ground here. also is there anything "we" can do to help the search function? pray, do a rain dance, hold warren hostage ? thanks to all, and lets start out the new year right, by having the gov't pass out free pellets and targets. speaking of targets, i have been using my dogs old toys, the smaller stuffed animal type, i just set them in a bucket of water till i get to my secret agent spy testing facility, (conveniently located close to home). what a reaction with the wet toys haha pellets hit with a loud thud and most of the time they will roll like a small critter would, and just the perfect size to boot.

if I was held hostage the search function would never work again since they would make sure I was never released LOL

pellet selection depends on many factors but let's start with breech size meaning ID, if the pellet is too lose in the breech then it not a good selection regardless of brand

case in point; my B28 shoots Gamo Hunter's better than Crossman Premier (Domed)

then the 34's likes the JSB exact, Beeman FTS, Benjamin Discovery and Premier hollow points in that order

I find the close I get to 15 gr. the better the air gun performs with high end FPS air guns in .22 cal.

10.6 gr. pellet for your 350 is a heavy one but I would have to say that air gun can handle it perfectly but you will have to buy different pellet brands to find out which one works the best in the 10 gr. + weight

I am still trying to figure out what pellet the RWS 94 (Cometa 400) likes, I have tried them all and still will NOT cooperate, thinking that the barrel is not choked and if that is the case then a simple fix is in the immediate future for her

for your 350 try this; cock the barrel half way and insert a pellet if you have to push it then you have a tight fit and if it drops in there eliminate it from your selection, do this without shooting the air gun, just insert and take them out with a rod

then record everything and shoot the pellets at a target and again record everything, compare the 2 areas and you should know which pellet is the best

stay as close with the gr. weight selection of your pellets when you do this test

warren

as usual, you have the good stuff. advice given and taken here is worth the price of admission alone. =) any way, it would not be a steady diet of them mostly just for small game season. i have been using a couple ultra mags in my 48, definatly more consistent, but i can hear and feel the difference in the shot cycle. none of my rifles are tuned yet but im gradually understanding some basics of the process. hector really got me going with the whole harmonics issue. i have been trying to research it but not much is available for us air gunners. plenty for the powder burners. maybe trying to implement some kind of architecture from those would be a start. anyways thanks again warren, you always have the good stuff

well i have tested all of the different pellets i have

January 5 2009, 5:21 PM

and you are quite right warren, some of them are quite loose in the breech as far as diameter goes, depending on the length also, like the jsb preds, kinda loose at the orifice but they snug up real well the further they are seated, but, that is a long pellet anyway and groups reflect that(imo).
crosman field points, .177 also, fit real loose in all of the 8 or 9 177cal rifles and pistols i have. but they group well in the 34. and i cant buy a group with any of the pumpers with the field points. the 48 doesnt seem to mind what fodder is loaded, they all group well with that one(my current fav) with the usual suspects doing the best. i have probably 20 different typs of pells and all seem to act different in each gun(like what was taught to us about each gun is its own entity, pellet wise). which brings me to another question, is there different types of chronographs ? do i need to look for any certain features or functions? i would be lying if i said i knew ANYTHING about a chrony except it seems to be quite a necessary tool for anything related to shooting sports. i see them listed from 50 - 200 dollars and i dont have a clue! anyway thanks for reading and we all appreciate the info and advice given here. oh and btw warren, your advice about writing down results and observations is probably the best advice yet and i have already started some logging, group sizes, how shot cycles differ,i guess a chrony is next on the list. keep the good stuff coming.shoot straight and speak the truth

Similar question

January 7 2009, 6:44 PM

I have a similar question. Not that I want to seem redundant, and/or ask a question whos only answer is "that depends" or is opinion based, but I have a 350 magnum in .22 - what is the heaviest round safe/effective to use? Ive heard various opinions on the matter of damage to the gun with too heavy a weight but what are you all's personal opinion on this? Im more or less looking for sheer knockdown power without sacrificing too much range /velocity but Im not a ballistics expert by any means. ((considering Kodiaks in 21 grain or eunjin wadcutters in 20))
Any and all help would be appreciated

the eternal questions about powerplants, pellets weight and FP's

not an answer about "that depends" or "in my opinion"

the 350 in .22 cal. will shoot about 660 to 870 FPS in these cal. with a stock spring at

RWS Hobby 12.10 gr. at about 870 fts
CP's with 14.39 gr. at about 820
silverace w/ 15.24 at 740
JSB exact w/ 15.74 at 745
Kodiak's w 21.10 at 660

PS: these #'s are from straight shooters' charts

Tom, most chronies will work well

January 8 2009, 11:12 PM

I prefer the Pro-Digital model just because the shooting window is so much larger and that allows me to measure velocities way out to 40- 50 yards.

It sells for US$120 as well. Directly from manufacturer.

Stick to the weight range that maximized energy in YOUR gun.

Thanks Hector

I have been looking at a few units online,I guess a good feature for me would be one that saves the data. Its probably not absolutely necessary to have the printing function as long as i can retrieve the good stuff, although it is a nice feature and, I like the idea of bigger screens also. I will definately check it out. Thank you sir

the Pro-Chrony and the Pro Digital are the same and you can buy for $50.00 the cable with RCA at the chrony and USB to the computer to record your FPS #'s, then you print then from your computer's printer

it is still called the Pro Chrony Digital, the fall back is that it is made of PLASTIC, don't shoot it LOL

Actually Warren they are competing products

January 9 2009, 11:06 PM

This is the Pro-Chrono-Digital:

http://www.competitionelectronics.com/pages/Prochrono_Digital.html

It's made by Competition Electronics, who made the first chrono I ever had, way back in 1987. Still have it and it is still as accurate as any Oehler 33 ever made. Checked and verified.

It saves a lot of data that I put down to paper once we've gotten home and guns are cleaned and put away. I will probably buy the cable / printer some day, but just not now. I purchased some rechargeable 9V batteries and keep two of them charged in the Chrono case. That way I never run out of "juice" and do not pollute the enviroment with dead batteries. I am researching into a solar adapater, as most chrono sessions I do in the day.

I have nothing against Chrony and its products, I just happen to like the Pro-Chrono better. Personal tastes.

Keep well!

the Pro Chrony

January 10 2009, 3:16 PM

I mentioned is the same you have and my son has, he uses it for paint ball sessions because paintball's cannot shoot more than 300 fps when they compete

the Pro chrony Digital is surrounded by a plastic case the other Chrony's have the metal casing and the Pro Chrony Digital has the capability to record to your computer the shoot strings'

if you have the cable and software, of course
