Two questions. Is there two styles of breech seals? And how do you remove the old one? I have seen this question asked before but never seen a answer. Is there a reason for that.
i removed mine while tuning the rifle and i had the compression chamber out.
i used a screw to screw into the seal and pulled it out with pliers like a dentist pulling teeth. it seemed welded in there. be careful not to screw into the metal. the new seal went in easy with a push from a 3/8 oak dowel "seal setter" that i made up.
I also have found changing these seals to be a bugger. I will try the screw next. What kind and size screw do you use?? Also I found a pencil with an eraser worked well to put the new seal in place. Lee
it might have been a drywall screw or a long wood screw. it needs to fit tight in the seal so it grips with not too much thread depth. course threads help as well. i rmember when i came out that i had a very hard time unscrewing the old seal off the screw so it was real tight. i just threw the whole thing away.
The original one was still black plastic, but it was perfectly flat until the rifle was shot the first time. Then the seal took-on the shape of the breech 'cone'.
Later, they made the seal so it already had a partial indentation for the breech cone even before you installed it. That's the current model seal, and it still conforms to the shape of the cone upon firing.
There is a another part shown at the same location on the parts breakdown---name, rumor, and reason have it that it's for limiting the FPE output in those countries where that's required by law. You won't see it on a rifle that was deliberately-exported to the USA for useage here.
