playing with the 46 stutzen

i was doing some initial sighting in of my new hawke scope on the 46 stutzen.
was getting it zeroed laterally and trying to zero it about half inch low at
13 yards. (don't ask me why 13 yards). best 5 shot group from seated FT position with harness .133 ctc. i guess i really can't ask for much better accuracy than that. i am not going to tell you that all my groups were that tight but i had several that would have been except for one human error flyer.
i had one set that was three shots in .043ctc with the other two in same size hole but the two groups were located about 1/4" apart. that would make that whole group .273 ctc.

trying to find the steadiest position is trial and error and a long session in tht position is tireing. i also drank a starbucks this morning and i usually
sware off caffiene when i shoot.

getting the stutzen to shoot accurately has involved some work. the stock was
applying uneven pressure and i needed to do some shimming. it was contacting
the cocking arm pivot and putting side pressure on the barrel. the cocking arm was also not centered to the cocking arm slot so i had to "tweak" that and it is perfectly centered and neutral. i am letting the front screws that hold the stock to the frontis piece apply very little side pressure. i am using nylon screws that are not fully tightened down. the regular stock screws are tight and i glued .0128 stanless shim inside the stock where the stock screws go through so the load is spread and the wood does not compress as much. i have ordered a screw cup kit from Mac-1.

the two breach seals are working very well. square cut 70D buna orings with .005 shims.

for now the scope is eyeballed for level. i ordered a level for the mount so i can level the gun and i will use a plumb line to get the cross hairs perfecly in sink with the gun.

couldn't hit the barn from the inside. it was me, not the gun. i was extremely
shakey. couldn't get steady for the life of me.

Patience and perseverance, my friend!

That's what it takes to get meaningful practice.

Practice per practice sakes is not always good.

Get in the mood before practicing!

practice is only valuable if you practice the correct form

March 3 2009, 4:21 PM

practicing the wrong form only reinforces the incorrect form.

i installed Mac-1 brass screw cups today. easy enough to install but the two screws supplied are not exactly the right length. the long screw is too long and the short screw is too short (does not engage enough threads) so i am on the hunt for 14mmx5mm (instead of 16mmx5 and 12 mmx5)button head allen screws.
still, i am making progress. i am also going to find a bushing to pillar bed the rear stock screw. the screw is 6mm and the hole in the wood is maybe 8mm or 9mm. this creates some slop. i am looking for a bronze busing that will fit the 6mm screw with a close fit. i will make it the correct length so the stock seats properly. i will probably have to drill out the hole in the wood slightly for a tight fit and will JB weld it in place. between this and the
screw cups i should have no movement of the action in the wood. follow that up with some acraglass bedding in the right places and i should have a perfect fit with stock and action being like one piece.

Bushings

March 3 2009, 6:36 PM

Greetings, Larry,

Send me a pic of what you want to do. I've been looking to tighten up my Stutzen. I can make 2 sets of spacer bushings for our guns.

thanks martin

i already did it tonight. found a bronze busing with a very close fit to the stock screw. about 1/2mm difference inside diameter to screw. i drilled for a press fit and tapped it in far enough to engage the threads on the stock screw and drove it home by tightening it down. same way you install screw cups. next will be some glass bedding.

i would just get a set of the Mac-1 screw cups. that is about 3/2rds of it right there. make a bushong since you can do that and get it as close to the
screw diameter as you can. keep it pretty thin because there is not much wood
back there. in fact i am thinking about some kind of shim behind the end cap
to transfer even more of the recoil to the stock. maybe a round brass piece with a slot for the safety instead of that silly plastic thing.
