The Diana LP8 Magnum does look cooler than the P5 Magnum

and comes with ambi grips and scope/dot rail. Appears to be the same 'guts'
or action as the P5 Magnum and same power level.

Looking at the Browning 800 break-barrel springer pistol I'm thinking it
might be made by IZH - just a guess. Advertised at the same power level
as the LP8 and P5 Magnum break-barrel springer pistols. Also says it's
recoilless. Looks even cooler than the LP8 Magnum.

Trying to decide which one I'll buy and give a try. The Browning sure
draws more of my interest, curiosity with it's looks and that recoilless
feature. Possibly it's made by Rutten - Browning did put their name on
some Rutten air rifles in the past.

Weihrauch should "get with it" and make a HW45 Super Magnum - a 3" longer
and sturdier version of the HW45/P1 Magnum with 1-2 more FPE. Well maybe
not since the price of the HW45/P1 is ridiculous at $400+!

A 7-8 FPE springer pistol would be nice. Yes I'm aware of the Kueng
Hypermagnum - man I want one!!! happy.gif

Go with the LP8

March 7 2009, 4:05 PM

One thing I did notice between the LP8 and P5 is that the LP8 is .5 lbs heavier according to the Diana website. That might help it absorb a little bit of the recoil. That Browning is just a rebadged Webley Typhoon made in Turkey and I haven't heard anything good about them. Like the P5 I doubt the Browning does the 700fps advertised velocity. I don't think you will ever see a more powerful HW45. With Germany and the U.K. having power limits of 5.6 and 6 fpe for air pistols I don't know if they would bother.

P5 will be discontinued...at least here in the US

March 7 2009, 4:32 PM

I talked to Umarex Glen last week and he told me that they will sell the P5 until they run out of stock and that is it. Unless the LP8 has significantly less recoil than the P5 (or there is a scope stop screw somewhere), the scope rail would be almost useless. I installed the rail on my P5 and after a dozen shots, the red dot went all the way back and out...I found a way to keep it on without a permanent fix, but it is a pain. The three problems that the P5 had, are cured by the LP8. Grips, safety pin position and scope rail. Unfortunately, the price also went up. All and all, my P5 is a magnificent gun, like a wild pony that one learns to tame shot after shot, day after day. After installing the scope rail, I found out that I shoot as well with the stock sight, so it was really a waste of time and money (and it is irreversible as well). I can't wait to try the LP8...

HW 70

Forget the velocity ads, and look for quality. I have not shot the RWS, but after shooting the HW 70 for the past two days, I would find it hard to beat the quality of this gun.

Well...

I've had an HW70 for a few years and I think my P5s are a little better. Not that the HW70 isn't a nice plinker.

HW 70 vs RWS p5

March 8 2009, 6:47 AM

I can't say anything against the Diana Pistol,( I have never shot one) but can only say how I feel about the HW 70. I went out this early morning and had the time of my life with this new pistol. The weight and feel of this gun was perfect. I like the Luger style and balance. The gun has a great punch to it. I was hitting a Styrofoam cup in the water at 40 yards with little trouble. (I never been a pistol shooter until just recently when I bought a Baikal 46m).Here is the written description of the gun.

Acquiring your target is a cinch with the hooded front sight and fully adjustable rear sight. A two-stage adjustable trigger helps shooters get the exact feel they need to hit their targets! With a velocity of 440 fps, the HW70A has a mild firing characteristic. While the gun is moderately priced, there's nothing moderate about its accuracy (.32" center-to-center). Seasoned and new shooters will enjoy shooting this quality German gun made by the legendary Weihrauch factory.

I have to agree with the statement above. The gun is very mild to fire, and the noise level is only a "2" as opposed the the Diana at "3". Yet the gun packs a great punch. I was using CP's. Another advantage I like over the Diana is the fact the gun is not even 13 inch's long as opposed to the Diana at a whooping 18 inches. My Baikal is roughly the same size and it is a BIG gun. The trigger pull on the HW was about 3 lbs or so while the Diana has it listed as about 1 and a half. For me, the two stage trigger on the HW was just fine. The cocking on the HW was listed at 38 lbs, but I found it extremely easy to cock with the short barrel.

Now the Diana is listed as having more power. Personally, I would not need that extra power in a pistol. If the Diana shoots as mild and smooth as the HW, then I would say that the Diana is a great pistol. But is it worth the xtra $80.00 more? That is your choice.Even if both guns had been the same price, I would choose the HW for the more compact design, the smoothness and the accuracy with the mild shooting characteristics of the gun. The fact that the gun is quiet is a great bonus.

I'm just hoping..

March 8 2009, 3:06 PM

I'm just hoping that we get the LP8 in Canada. They do not list a .22 option on the Diana website at the moment. We only got the .177 P5 because Diana was nice enough to use a 9 grain pellet to get it a manufacturer's velocity rating of under 500 fps. They did the same thing to get the Daina 24 a non PAL rating. Our laws do not specify the weight of the pellet used for testing but that might get changed. At the moment it's good for us and Diana because we get the full power version and they don't have to do any modifications. I do like my HW70 enough to consider getting the HW70 Black Arrow. It's the scope only version with the muzzle break.
