Here's my "new" 34 panther with a 13" barrel, cut crowned and choked by Paul Watts. I also have a JM kit in it, apex larger seal, JM's glue on buttons on the piston skirt, Chris' polished metal airhawk trigger that I gave him so much grief about happy.gif ...it sure looks nice, but functions about the same as the plastic one, at least in my opinion. With the chopped barrel this gun balances very nicely. I originally had a weaver 2.5-7 rimfire classic mounted on it, but since it has a set parallax of 50 yards it was a little out of focus on 7x at the ranges I normally shoot (25-30 yds.). So I put on a burris timberline 4.5-14AO. Still a nice compact scope with nice optics. I'm not sure how much weight it lost with missing 6" of barrel, but it sure feels solid and compact with an overall length of 39". I checked the velocity today and with 14.3 gr crosman premiers (it's a .22 cal) it was getting: Hi-668, Low-659, Avg-664, ES-9, SD-3 for a 10 shot string. I think the velocity picked up around 10-15 fps with the shorter barrel. Accuracy is the same or better, but it's hard to make a good comparison as I had a beeman sport aperture on it before. I did shoot a few sub 3/4" groups at 30 yards with the new setup. I'm already looking forward to next fall's squirrel season!
Regards, Scott

How is the cocking effort?

I would think that short barrel gives up some leverage. Do you just slip a pipe over it, sort of like the old Scorpion pistol?

nice, very nice

I tried to have mine cut to 14" but my tuner would have "NONE" of that, he said 16" and 16" it was (carbine) size

he's and old traditionalist that stated "If you want the barrel that short then buy yourself a PISTOL" LOL

accuracy improved a WHOLE lot shooting 680 fps with 14.3 CP's and with open sights at the 20-25 yard range it is a sweet 34 to shoot and has the same internal's as yours' but with a top hat and rear guide

cocking is in the mid 20ish pounds and not that difficult

warren

PS: by the way you cut 6 1/2" of barrel, the Panther and the M34 are 19 1/2" long from the factory

and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"

Nice job Scott!

I have really learned to love carbines after having purchased a C1. You have got me thinking now about chopping my 34. My 34 in 177. was detuned and now shoots very smooth at about 760 fps. The cocking effort was reduced considerably. I think chopping this gun would really be nice.
Thanks for the info. So what is the total length now?

Good Job!
Dave

For Warren...

Paul tried to talk me out of cutting it that short. He recommended a minimum of 15". He told me the bores are often off center when you take that much off. I took a chance and mine was still pretty much centered. This gun is now about an inch longer than my webley xocet carbine. My webley has a muzzlebreak, but I like the looks of the plain barrel on the 34 and will probably leave it as is. Paul touched up the bluing at the muzzle where he cut and choked it...it matches perfectly. Now to get one of these made up in .177 happy.gif

for Scott

March 19 2009, 9:17 AM

you have that right about the Webley Xocet, it is 14" barrel long in .22 cal at least mine is

and you are wrong about the Panther in 13" being 1" longer than the 14" Xocet, your Panther in 13" is 1" shorter than the Xocet's barrel in 14" long

check your tape measurements or your reading glasses, LOL

the Xocet has an 10 1/2 air chamber compared to the 12" in the Panther, that is the difference in FPS between high 700 for the Panther and high 600 for the Xocet

Scott, you still have a one of a kind Panther, enjoy it

the cocking effort isn't that bad...

March 19 2009, 8:23 AM

probably about the same as my proelite. For some reason this gun cocks very, very smoothly. I really didn't do much other than polish the cocking arm foot and the pivot washers. I think it's just well broken in.
