can anyone tell me if moly and black tar are the same thing or they different. if different where can i buy black tar thanks again you guys have helped me a great deal and i apprichate it.
Different, and black/clear tar and moly can be had from JM at ARH.
I have the large size for my many airguns...
I have one 34 in which I used clear tar behind the piston and another 34 in which I used the preferred moly, 100fps difference between the two choices as the moly is faster. The black tar can be thought of as a glue since once applied it stays put. (My used round spring looked like a square one with the black tar around it.)
moly is for metal to metal except in the case of springs

which will fling it off over time. the moly bonds with metal and becomes a super lubricant. i suppose it would work on springs but you would have to re-apply it often i think and it does not have the dampening properties that
tar has. if you have a sring that makes metal to metal contact with the piston it might even increase velocty for a time. do use it on spring ends where they cantact the inside of the piston and the trigger group. i also like to use moly on cocking shoes and on the top of the cocking slot where the shoe contacts during cocking. i use it on pivot bolts as well.
do not over apply moly to the piston seal area since it can work its way forward and make the gun diesel which will make it shoot eratic. i think the best thing to do is burnish it into the metal behind the seal and apply a light coat at the stem end of the piston. less is more.
Plus, the Clear Tar is explicitly to keep the outside of your sliding cylinder (460, 54, 52, 48...) looking pretty instead of seeing that black stuff on the outside of it.
