Is tuning a 34 worth it really?

Some feedback please. I have a model 34 that is a little dry but I shoot it daily.--Paid $180 for it.Jim Macarri kit$69+moly$7+$10 apex seal+$9shipping is $95/dollars.,meaning I will have $275 in the gun.----The cost of the gun increases over 50% and the warranty is invalidated.-Is it worth it to do? Will I really notice a huge difference? ---This gun is strong and shoots good to start with for plinking in the back yard.(Groups are ok but not wonderful).
I have money but I am cheap. My fear is that I will hone the cylinder, install the seal and kit,tar the spring, and won't really even notice the difference. Is the macarri kit and seal really that wonderful,---or is it a bunch of hype? Internet gun-forum hype.
I need some honest opinions.--Thanks----Johnny Miller

Johnny don't be cheap, you can't take it with you. The kit from Maccarri is excellent and worth every penny. If you do it right your gun will be a big improvment over the stock 34. It will behave like a whole different gun. Being that your a cheap guy you will be so happy because you really got your money's worth. You will enjoy shooting your gun more after the tune. HTH.

Done to two 34 Panthers at the same time... Don't forget about the Leapers droop mount $20, Leapers rings $10, and Hawke Airmax 2-7x32 scope $130. These items allow you to get the most accuracy. One is pretty nice and is shooting 750fps with 10.5gr CPH with a unfitted tesla seal, the other needs more work as it's at 650fps for some reason and need to tighten the barrel pivot as POI changes... (Was first one to get the treatment, second rifle came out better, OEM as out of the box it was shooting at 750fps with 10.5gr CPH.)

About $320 per rifle when done... Yes, in the end they were worth it for me.

34 Tune

April 18 2009, 10:22 PM

Hi Johnny,

I'll be finding out real soon if the Maccari GRT tune kit, seal and lube are worth it, it should all be here 4/20/09.

I'll be doing the hone and trigger work myself. I started having accuracy problems and found the front saddle was loose where it attaches to the compression tube, found the fix on another thread; it works itself loose over time on some rifles. Well, one thing leads to another and I decided to take the rifle apart for a lube tune, guess what? the piston seal had a slice/cut on the bottom leading edge (inline with the cocking lever slot), I assume it was damaged when they assembled it at the factory. There wasn't much lube anywhere in the rifle, yea, there was some grease in there, but not much and it was kinda dried out too, not to mention metal edges so sharp you could shave with it. The spring was somewhat twangy too. I bought this rifle about 1997 and it has the T01 trigger, so I said to myself; go ahead and get the Maccari GRT kit and some moly grease and give it a go, a new rifle would cost more than a tune kit and probably need a tune too, after seeing what was inside my rifle. We'll see how it works out, I'll post my opinion when I'm finished.

If your rifle is new, go ahead and shoot it for awhile and see if you like it enough to spend the extra dough on it. Warranty, I've had mine long enough I don't care about it, but that's just me.

Hype? I don't think so, Maccari seems to have been around a good while and a lot of folks think very highly of his products and service. All the folks can't be wrong about this tuning thing in my opinion and mine was due for service anyway.

If you are not mechanically inclined or don't have the minimum tools necessary to do the work, you might give it some more thought.

I'll keep you posted...

Gene

GO FOR IT and I am #4 with the same dance and song

John: you did not buy a $200 air gun OEM by the time you finish with it the right amount of $$ will be X-2 or 3

$200 for the 34
$90.00 for the scope (middle end)
$20 for a mount
$90 for the JM kit

you just hit the $400 mark

will the 34 be worth $400 when you sell it? NOPE because others will buy a 34 for $200 and will eventually spend $200 more on it, then it will their's $400 RWS 34

I have spend more than $400 on my 34's, adding ALL of the above PLUS a recoil pad, recarving the wood stock, metal trigger, muzzel weight, etc.

is any of my 34's worth $600 "Nope" again but to me!!! they are worth it

warren

and remember "it's 30% the gun and 70% the shooter"

No.

If you disassemble, replace the piston seal if necessary, deburr, polish and lightly chamfer the spring ends, lube properly, and glue/shrink a (~50¢) piece of common oleofin heat shrink tubing onto the spring guide ("shrink tune"), it will be 90-95% as docile and pleasant as a gun that has an expensive tune kit installed.

I have a couple of professionally tuned HW air rifles....most of my "shrink tuned" air rifles have nearly as good firing characteristics, at less than 10% of the cost.

Shrink Tuning is a staple of tightwads and turd polishers, but it seldom gets talked about because it isn't fashionable or have brag appeal. happy.gif

Shrink tube tune, WHAT, no duct tape?

April 19 2009, 9:05 PM

Sorry, I couldn't resist Jeff, I'm pullin' your leg. Yea, I've heard of and saw some guys using shrink tube on their spring guide and have seen the aftermath on some of them. Don't get me wrong, if it's workin for ya- it's workin' for ya.

As far as polishing turds, I don't bother, I just repaint em'.

Re:.....

April 21 2009, 5:35 PM

Hi Gene,
I was trying to give the original poster an easy, low cost alternative to paying $69. It is a legit way to eliminate spring twang, I have done it to many airguns, as have many others.
It seems that you are trying to discredit the technique by saying "have seen the aftermath on some of them". Could you please be more specific?
Is this you? http://www.airguntoys.com/
Like I said, I'm just trying to help the guy out with info that happens to be "not in fashion" at this moment. What may I ask was your goal?

Have a good one.

shrink tube tune

April 21 2009, 11:08 PM

Hey Jeff,

Man, you busted me on the Gene's Guns & Toys website, I was shamelessly promoting myself.LOL

C,mon Jeff lighten up, no goal in mind, just playin' around, sure didn't mean to gore your ox, I'll walk softer around you now.

Is this you who says that the shrink tube can come off sometimes? http://www.network54.com/Forum/79537/thread/1155072024/Shrink+tubing+on+spring+guide+questions

I can't remember where I saw some photos of the shrink tube coming off the spring guide, but I'll find em'.

Not trying to make enemies, "Can't we all just get along?"

Peace...

Gene

MIght benefit if you shoot certain weight pellets

April 19 2009, 9:07 PM

Think I recall someone opining that slightly thicker (as in JM) springs hold up better than the thinner factory springs if you tend to shoot heavy pellets. That might be one reason for a tune. But, as said, you can always shoot it until something goes and then have a tune done. There are those guns that do pretty well out of the box.

Get the tune

April 20 2009, 2:26 AM

I have posted this before but here it goes. Get the tune. My 34 was a twangy mess when it was new. After a MZ tune and a new JM buttpad, the gun is now one fine shooting gun. By the way, the "the droop virus" was not a problem with this gun. Just a little shim. However, I like shooting the gun without a scope.
