i recently got back in to air rifles. after spending 2 months trying to decide what to buy i bought a 460.when i recieved the gun every shot fired the cocking lever flew open.i fixed that with sring pressure on the detent.the gun shot 1 inch groups at 25 yrds open sights.i ordered a air hawk scope and leapers mounts.the scope would not adjust to the left at 10 yrds enough to sight in.still i liked 2 in to left to be on target.rings appeared to be off center and theads were really rough in rings.returned both to p.a. for about 15 dollars shippping.i bought a burris rimfire scope and burris sig rings and mounted that.first shot at 10 yards no adjustment needed.at 25 yds elavation was all that was adjusted. the 460 shot 3 inch groups at 40yrds. after about 100 dollars in different pellets still same results. yes im aware of hold positoins.800 rds later and 30 dollars shipping its off to umerax.i called umarex on good friday they said it was the piston sring and breech seal and it had too much oil in it.the gun was never oiled while i had it. either it was sold to me used and i didnt know it or it was factory oiled to stsrt with.anyway they said it would ship on monday.7 days later no 460.called umarex on monday of following week and the said tyey would try to ship that day .there was no reason given for the delay.maybe i can find a second job to fund this airgun hobby.also i would like to say that pyramid air would not let me post my ratings on the hawk scope or the rings or the pellets.i think you have to give a 4 or 5 to be posted on there web sight. hope everyone has a nice day..
You didn't say .22 or .177. My 460 in .177 shoots 1/2" groups at 30 yards with H&N Match select (Same as Kodiaks, except selected to be same weight). It didn't always (OK, it did, then it got a weak mainspring, then I tuned it, then it took a lot of shooting/struggling to get right again.....).
First off Welcome.
Second, New RWS guns almost never come with too much oil (mostly come with none). That should be water over the dam now as UMAREX does grease them when they work on them.
Third, you need a solid scope mount that compensates for droop. I recommend the Leapers one piece mount with a piece of the plastic from the ring packaging put under the scope at the rear ring. I would also use blue lock tite on the mount screws.
Fourth, Chrony. Make sure your gun is shooting consistently - mine took about a thousand shots before it settled down again (but of course I also had loosening scope issues).
Fifth, The 460 does have some problems that can occur that could also be causing these problems. Watch the sliding breech, does it close smoothly and fully - otherwise could need an additional or stronger breech lockup spring. Another item could be the breech seal; that would show up on the chrony, but could be a fix for low or eratic velocities.
Once you get the 460 right you will be pleased with it.
As JC says the breach lock up spring and seal need to be put right on a lot of 460s from new, but it is a very small job.
When I bought my 460 I already knew about this so I gave it a re lube and fixed the spring and seal at the same time and now the 460 is my favorite airgun.
I just use a cheap airgun rated nikko stirling 3x9x40 and its fine.

thanks for the information.the 460 is in 22 cal. i used the mount made for the 460 i think its leapers anyway it seemed perfect for the gun.the rings are burris signature rings with the adjustable inserts.burris 3-9-40 rimfire airgun scope.i own 7 of these ring\ scope setups and have never had any problems.i didnt know the 460 had the problems it does or i would have tried the 54. thanks for the help
i just thought of some more information i had. umarex emailed me and said there gunsmith shot a .394 5 shot group at 20 yrds with rws meisterkugeln.i dont know if this is good or bad for a 460 in 22. i need to buy a crony any ideas on where to start loking. thanks
Try what you get back from UMAREX. Don't fix it if it ain't broke! If you still have problems, go with some of the other ideas. I like the Beta Chrony. It lets you shoot/store multiple strings without stopping. I stopped at the other items like remote screen (master) so you could get speed downrange or computer interface so you can load on a computer and analyze further, but they are available. I got mine from Pyramyd Air.
PS - I make that as a 2 MOA gun. That equates to a .591 group at 30 yards. Not too shabby, but a better test would be to shoot a longer distance and work it backwards as flight path issues might not show up in the shorter distances.
"also i would like to say that pyramid air would not let me post my ratings on the hawk scope or the rings or the pellets.i think you have to give a 4 or 5 to be posted on there web sight."
Too true! I gave a product continuing a tough, but totally fair, review. Never posted.
RE: .394 @ 20yds w/ Meisterkugeln- that's good for flatheads at >800 fps. Domes will tighten that up considerably.
The 460 is a good gun, but as other posters have pointed out, the breech tension spring could stand strengthening. Till you do that, you are likely to regularly fry breech seals.
Every 460 I,ve ever owned or tuned loved Crosman Pre. or JSB Exacts 14.3gr pellets. I,d bet it either had a piston seal with a nick in the face or a thin breech seal. The boys at Umerex are good for selling you parts but I don,t have alot of faith in their gunsmithing. I recently bought a Refurbished 48 in 22cal that fired Crosman 14.3gr at 700fps when I got it. They are useing a batch of old breech seals for 48-52 seies guns that don,t work. I make my own now!
Give them a chance and see what it does when it comes back. I have a hard time believeing a tight group with light weight pellets . Maybe at ten feet! John
first i want to thank everone for there imput.im new on here but ive tried to look at all old post on the 460 to learn something. is there a airgun made that you can buy and shoot without working on it? the sliding breech spring problem.whats the best fix a new sring from rws or aftermarket.john do you think they just put a bandade on it or what?there email said a new sring but did not mention the seal.
This spring is a small spring in the "elbow" of the cocking lever that results in the last bit of closure of the sliding compression chamber (or not if it is weak). If that last bit of closure is not solid, the barrel doesn't seal with the breech and velocity goes down as well as the seal is burned. The fix is either a new RWS spring part, a new stronger spring from wherever, or wind another spring inside the existing one to give a resultant stronger spring. You could probably go too strong here, but I think the downside would not be as bad as too weak.
