well i took jc advice and got a spring to go over top of the stock breech lock up spring and after 100 shots or so alls well.tried some jbs pellets and beeman fts yeserday and could not beat the cp groups.after all the money spent on pellets im back to what i started with.1 inch groups at 52 yrds is the best i can do.i still need lots of practice.how long should the breech seal last or how many shots before it needs replaced?and where do i get a spare any ideas. thanks

Breech Seal

1" groups at 52 yards, that's great for a springer (assuming you are talking 5 shot groups and you can do it group after group, not just the best you shot once with a few pellets......).

Anyhow, UMAREX has spares, but you need to get an order together as their shipping is about $10 for pretty much anything. Also, Barry has a British source for extra strong breech seals. I know of nothing inherently wrong with the RWS seal. If you keep the breech lock spring in good shape and keep the sliding mechanism moly lubed on the outside (avoid the tendency to want to wipe is shiny), the seal should last several thousands of shots. One slip up and a leaky seal will be toast though.

What caliber do you have? Mine's a .177 and I have been eating mainsprings with Kodiaks (10.6g). I have switched to JSB Exacts (8.4g)now that it will shoot them subsonic (975 fps). Doing good so far.

Terry if you have found the right spring the JC fix really works, I was lucky I found just the right spring, but when I put a spacer behind the original seal it split that is why the original has to be just right. I think that most of the seal problems with the 460 are weak tension spring but I just made sure with a special seal so I would not have to change it any more, but I have on order 2 new seals and 2 new springs from Germany to see if there is any change.
When I first got my 460 I knew about the seal problem but I liked the gun so much that was considering asking Steve Pope V-Mach to modify the breach lock up completely and do away with the spring and have a diffrent cocking linkage, but I am satisfied at the moment with what I have got.
Barry.

breech shim

Mine didn't have one and didn't change its performance when I added one, so I am not using one. If you do add one, it has to be the same OD as the seal or you risk cracking the seal.

seems like the two spring deal works good. but the seal looked like it had some heavy wear after about 200 shots.so what would you recommend order seals and spacers for it for spares?i guess i need a crony bad to see what its shooting and looks like i need it to tune the maruader.

breech seal

May 8 2009, 5:48 PM

A new one starts out bright blue. A used one quickly gets smashed into the shape of the barrel pressing into it and darkened. No worries. Rob has posted one here that is pitted, burnt, and deformed. You don't want that. As long as you have a nice donut shape around the center hole with no pock marks, you are good to go. Spares wouldn't hurt. I'm not a big fan of breech spacers, but who is to say, your gun may need one...

A chrony is pretty handy

May 9 2009, 6:03 AM

If you see a noticable drop off (which can also be detected by poi shift, but not with the confidence of a chrony) in fps, time to look for the culprit. Lockup, breech seal, compression seal and mainspring would be the main suspects.

For now, you need to shoot - particularly the new Marauder, I need to get the long term reports to see that it is as good as it seems......

thanks for the input on the 460.the maruader i recieved was number 0047 in 22.im new to all this air rifle stuff and im not sure what to expect in rifles. been a powder shooter all my life.the marauder looks like a savage use to look 20 years ago.it just plain wood straight grain with stain. stain was smeared in places on the stock.but it feels excellent to me.hole for the air gauge was bored off center.bluing on 1 screw on top of bolt had blueing gone from poor fitting screwdriver.barrel band appears to be loose but theres 2 set screws holding it in place they probly just need tightning up.am i too picky or do i expect to much for 530 plus shipping.you can buy some really nice powder guns for that.maybe im just not living in the real world.
