took yesterday afternoon off and hit my local river. may is the time when we get a movement of fish up from a reservoir that this river feeds into. rainbows.

i fish with glass rods built by me. i like to fish with wet flies and nymphs. i use a two fly rig with the nymph on the end and a we about 12 to 18" up the line tied on a surgeons knot tag where i have joined two pieces of tippet. i use 4x or 5x for this.

i hit the water about 4:00. lots of smallish fish and thew were actively eating my flies. about half on the wet and the other half on the nymph. i fish this rig upstream and accross atg a 45 degree angle and drift the rig through the runs and behind rocks till it starts to swing downstream. i then lift to bring the rig to the surface like emerging insects. i get most if my hits as the wet fly breaks the surface film but sometimes they take the nymph on the rise. i had a good evening. fsihed about 1.5 hrs for about 8 fish. nothing big which is typical for this river at this time of year. june and july bring some larger fish.

this is the rod i used. i built this rod a few years ago from a liamiglass blank that i extended to 7'9".

unfortunately that camera crapped out and i have

May 8 2009, 8:06 AM

not replaced it yet. it was a minolta Dmage 7 with a nice close focusing lense. i shoot those pics by diffused window light off of a trypod and then black out the back ground in photoshop. airguns have diverted my camera money but i am looking at the nice cannon G9 or whatever replaces it. so many hobbies. so little money. i still have my Wizner Technical Field 4x5 and nothing photgraphs like it does but its too much work. Film is a pain these days. then i would have to scan the transparencies into photoshop and get them adjusted. to think i used to spend 8 hours in a dark room working on one print and then throw it away because it did not meet my standard for display.

My problem isn't so much "so many hobbies, so little money" as it is "so many hobbies, so little time". Can't find time to do all the stuff I want - man am I glad I retired five years ago! I'm going to the range this afternoon to try some small bore (.22 rimfire) silhouette; Monday is looking like a good day to shoot CO2 - projected high of 78. In the mean time, is Mother's day and my mother in law's 90th birtday - will all kinds of relatives hitting town starting today. I did get a day trip to Yellowstone in last month - bicycled 26 miles - it was GLORIOUS. Anyway, then I have to start practicing for the next FT match - next Saturday - missed the last one as we had to trek 1000 miles each way for a death in the family. So it goes . . .

Very nice work Larry. I have hand tied several spinning rods and know the detail that goes into shaping cork and spinning the guides on with the rod spinner !

The G10 replaced it back in Sept 2008 and is the current model. I have a G10 I use when I don't feel like carrying a lot of glass around with me. It's a great little camera Larry. Many of these were taken with the G10:
