I don't recall ever reading about....

anyone experimenting with using a stronger and shorter spring in this or that
springer so the main spring fits uncoiled or not under partial compression.
Disassembly would be a bit easier and more relaxing, possibly the same power
level or a bit more or less would be achieved and maybe the spring would last
longer too. No spring compressor or buddy or short strenuous workout required
to get inside the gun. Taking the springer apart would be more like it is with
gassers, pumpers, etc. Yes I know there's already a few springers like that
from the factory. Yes I know there's not a great assortment of quality springs
available but surely enough to discover a good match for some decent springers.

Probably some think why bother or it ain't worth messing with - heck that's
more or less true about a lot of little tinkerish crap airgun nuts do happy.gif LOL

i tuned an HW 50s that way

August 28 2009, 6:25 AM

i took a GRT spring that was made for a diana 52. it fit the inside of the piston much closer and also fit the stock guide better. i shortened it 5 coils. the original spring was longer and looser and had thinner wire. the GRT spring made the gun dead smooth. there was also very little pre-load. it was much easier to cock. the velocity was 790fps which is slightly better than the original spring was giving me. i did space the grt spring nearly half inch to get that speed. if i were going to do it again i would shorten the spring only
2 or three coils.

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout -

thanks Larry! Surely that thicker wired JM spring will last a looooong time in
your HW 50s and the improved shot cycle, cocking and power are icing on the cake!

By two springs....

keep shortening the first one until it's too short then do the second one right...if you make them too short then you wind up with alot of vibration as there is not enough pressure on the ends of the spring to dampen it...found out the hard way...

Maybe when I tune my HW50S I can get 2 of the springs for the 52 and give this a try.

kieth, if you are going to use a GRT spring from JM

August 28 2009, 3:00 PM

make sure he sets it for you. then i would take two coils off first and close the end of the spring and dress the end. that will probably do it. you won't need spacing then.

what you will notice is that after you cock it and as you close the barrell you will hear the shoe end drag over the spring. you can file out the curve in the bottom of the shoe a little and polish the bottom on a wheel. it should eventually stop making the noise. you will notice a profound difference in the sound of the gun. no buzz and very solid "thunk".

JM has been doing it for years. Just ask him, he will tell you that spring length is irrelevant.

On my 460, I had a fatter spring guide made to fit a V-Mach HW80 spring, just 26 coils wow did it go, it also fits my 34 giving 16 ft/lbs.
