Im building from scratch now!! I have a hardwood supplier most would kill for!! I have enough wood to build about 25 stocks here now. My Buddy is going thru all new shipments "Culling" aside all the highly figured wood aside for me now as most of his customers want only straight grained wood for cabinets & furnature. He called me today & said Tim,,, wait till you see the Walnut I put aside for you today!! happy.gif Here are a couple of pretty plain stock blanks I cut out today. Wait till Ya see what I got in the works!! happy.gif "Old Tim".[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Walnut

That wood looks pretty wet. Is it freshly cut? How is your supplier storing it? I've got a big piece of black walnut that I cut out of a tree a few years ago. Two and a half, to be exact. I've been storing it in a cool, dry, stable temperature place since then and it's already got a few small sinister looking cracks in it. Maybe I should just send it to you Tim, and trade one of the two, plus some $$, for actually doing something with it. What are the dimensions on those blanks?

My Wood,,,,

October 22 2009, 6:19 PM

Im getting my hardwood from a major distributor in Chas. SC. It is all dryed correctly. All I brought home was between 12-15% moisture content. happy.gif I have owned my own saw mill & have milled tens of thousands of board ft of lumber & dryed it myself,,,, you cant fool me!! happy.gif Im still working on my new shop & tooling. I will soon be offering DIY inletted stock blanks as well as finished ones. "Old Tim".

Some "Checking" is normal drying wood. (No avoiding it) The best way is SLOW!! Air drying for some time is best before bringing it indoors or into a drying kiln. Drying wood is just as much of an "Art" as shaping it!! happy.gif You can dry it fast but it will be useless?? sad.gif Im not sure what Ya got but,,, it may be some nice stuff!! happy.gif "Old Tim".

"TM-Classic" or "TM-original" :-)

October 23 2009, 2:22 AM

I hope te see a nice Stutzen stock for the Diana 48 in te future and this stock will be called: "TM-Classic" or "TM-Original" happy.gif It must be possible for a real "wood-artist" to make a Stutzen stock for a Diana 48. This would be THE ultimate side lever Stutzen ! Succes with your superb work ! Best regards from Johannis.

P.S. you all understand: TM stands for Tim Meredith happy.gif

Tim:

you could make a wood blank for the M48 that fit's this bill:

profile
cut
inleted
thumb hole
tyrolean cheek

and not stained for a decent price out of walnut then I would buy it and have Howie finish it

if Don Main makes them for the QB series for $125.00 out of walnut, maple, cherry, plus $25.00 for shipping then you can do it for the M48

"TM-Classic" or "TM-original" :-)

Redundancy on the Stutzen stock: price is not an issue in the first place. We have a man on this forum who is 200% "master Mannlicher style stock maker" but how can we get him so far that he makes a Stutzen stock what will become an icon ? To complete what Warren said: complete rifle length must be < 100 cm. ( limit is 102 cm. ) and therefor we must shorten the barrel. No problem because every Stutzen rifle has a short barrel. <br>
I am curious who will ( ever ) be the first man having a "TM-Classic" or "TM-original" Stutzen style stock ? When Tim is making the decision to make on I will be one of his first customers !

Come on forummembers: motivate the master stockmaker happy.gif Best regards from Johannis.

Stutzen etc.

October 23 2009, 1:23 PM

Howie, actually there is no difference beacuse both are names for this "stock style" where the wood is till the front of the barrel. What's a name happy.gif
For me this style is superb to see and to shoot because most of these "Stutzen or Mannlicher style" rifles are pretty short and nice to handle. Most ( 95% )of these type of rifles are < 100 cm. Best regards from Johannis.

to Warren -

Knowing Tim is starting a stock making business and then say you want a blank to send to someone else is, well, kind of insulting. Tim's work is gorgeous! He's found a source of beautiful wood and lets see how it turns out. We are not talking about Reinhardt Fajen here who offer stock blanks for sale, but someone who's end is to sell the finished stocks he crafts.

Go Tim! A custom stock for my rifle is not in the cards, but I love to look at your creations!

48 - Not that Warren needs defending (he has proven quite capable of that himself),but Tim indicated he will offer DIY stocks and Warren just gave more details of how his particular DIY would work. I'm sure that Tim is well aware Howie's capabilities.

M48:

Tim knows Howie and vice versa, in fact Tim wanted an air rifle from Howie and I bought it and sent it to Tim

1. now Tim lives in SC and is thousands of miles away from me and Howie is 30 minutes driving time

2. if I explained to Tim on the phone what I wanted It could possible be mis-understood but with Howie it is a face to face arrangements

3. I offered an OPTION to Tim and many wood stock makers have this option in their pricing, ask S. Corcoran (one of the best in this trade for YEARS) and I am only trying to help Tim in case he has a wood stock that someone ordered and then backs' off the deal

4. while I don't doubt the quality of Tim's work it is withing my discretion to decide WHO?? does my work for me since it is my $$$

5. they are both my friends
